Chapters 30–50 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 30Monologue

Lor'themar, nicknamed Aqiang, recalled how her unusual talent made her invisible to anyone weaker than her and how she had grown devoted to Prince Kael'thas after helping raise him. As Prince Kael'sala prepared to explore a tomb with Kael'thas, Aqiang still wondered when the young prince would finally be able to see her.

  • Lor'themar recalled being overlooked since birth because only people stronger than her could notice her, and how she grew stronger through battlefield missions.
  • Lor'themar described joining Prince Kael'sala at Sunstrider Tower and spending more than 170 years there, eventually helping raise Prince Kael'thas.
  • Lor'themar cherished Kael'thas as a playmate and secretly watched him mourn alone by the sea, resolving not to reveal his sadness.
  • After an old man left Kael'thas with a glowing red sword, Prince Kael'sala returned with beads and told Lor'themar to give the sword to the guards before they explored a tomb.
  • Lor'themar handed the sword to a guard, but Kael'thas still did not notice her.

Ch. 31Leveling Up

Kael'thas infiltrated the Amani Tomb in disguise and reached an underground plaza, completing his investigation and advancing to level 20. After his mana capacity expanded, he received a new quest to plant an informant.

  • Kael'thas entered the Amani Tomb with an enchanted orb that let his allies observe him and guide him through the tunnels.
  • Kael'thas followed the correct routes, accidentally collided with several stealthed Troll rogues, and confirmed that his disguise worked.
  • Kael'thas reached two Troll guards overlooking a huge underground plaza and completed the quest to investigate the tomb, earning 4,000 experience and reaching level 20.
  • Kael'thas's mana lake expanded, reducing the cost of his skills, and he briefly sensed everything within two meters.
  • Kael'thas received the quest to plant an informant.

Ch. 32Ghosts

Kael'thas infiltrated the Troll square to plant surveillance balls, but the balls vanished onto the altar through unseen help, leaving him convinced a ghost was haunting him. He returned to his teacher, hoping for an explanation and a chance to learn more skills.

  • Kael'thas entered the Troll square after his orb concealed him from the guards and searched for the command post.
  • Kael'thas identified the central altar as the likely target, but could not find a way to approach it unnoticed.
  • An unseen presence took the blue balls from Kael'thas's pockets and placed them on the altar, completing the quest and earning him 4,000 experience.
  • Kael'thas mistook the unseen helper for a ghost and begged her to stop haunting him, while Lor'themar was hurt by his name for her.
  • Kael'sala told Kael'thas that magic, not a ghost, had placed the balls, but he remained unconvinced and headed back to his teacher.

Ch. 33The Necklace

Kael'thas met with Mephistes to learn new magic and was offered a set of powerful spells in exchange for forgetting skills he had not analyzed. He accepted the trade and received a magical storage necklace, leaving with new spells and a way to store and summon his sword.

  • Mephistes discovered Kael'thas had reached the middle stage of the junior professional and explained that he needed to learn Warrior skills because he was weak in close combat.
  • Kael'thas demonstrated his modified Fireball, and Mephistes offered him new skills in exchange for erasing memories of unanalysed incantations.
  • Mephistes offered Polymorph, Arcane Explosion, Flamestrike, Conjure Mana Gem, Invisibility, and a four-cubic-meter storage necklace; Kael'thas chose all five spells and gave up Frost Nova after learning Arcane Explosion could blast enemies away.
  • Mephistes erased Kael'thas's memories of Frostbolt, Ice Lance, Scorch, Fire Blast, Molten Armor, and Frost Nova, then taught him the five new skills.
  • Kael'thas put on the necklace and learned its incantation, using it to store and summon his red runesword.
  • Mephistes explained that the necklace could hold living creatures but was sealed and lacked air, so Kael'thas realized it could still be useful with careful timing.

Ch. 34Do You Believe in Ghosts?

Kael'thas learned basic sword techniques from Audilon Firewing, then decided to use magic to make up for his lack of physical strength. His idea triggered a quest chain and a Weapon Mastery System, and he ended the chapter by asking Mephistes whether he believed in ghosts.

  • Mephistes took Kael'thas to Audilon Firewing to learn basic close-combat techniques, and Audilon's loyalty to Kael'thas increased to 80.
  • Audilon taught Kael'thas basic sword stances, but Kael'thas struggled because his physique favored agility over strength.
  • Audilon said his soldiers would protect Kael'thas, prompting Kael'thas to resolve to become stronger and learn melee skills.
  • Kael'thas decided to enchant his sword with magic, triggering the first Enchant Weapon quest and the Weapon Mastery System.
  • Kael'thas asked Mephistes whether he believed in ghosts, and someone nearby ran away crying.

Ch. 35Mount

Kael'thas studied basic runic characters while practicing sword movements at Windrunner Spire, as Kael'sala quietly enjoyed watching him. A riding trainer then brought him a snow-white Hawkstrider gifted by the queen, and Kael'thas formed a contract with it before naming it Xiao Bai.

  • Kael'thas studied Mephistes's runic book while practicing basic sword movements for many days.
  • Kael'sala watched Kael'thas from the office window and wished their peaceful life could last.
  • A riding trainer arrived from Silvermoon City with a snow-white Hawkstrider raised by the queen for Kael'thas.
  • Kael'thas formed a contract with the Hawkstrider and named it Xiao Bai.
  • Kael'thas let the riding trainer take Xiao Bai back to Silvermoon City until he could summon it the next day.

Ch. 36The Interval (Part One)

Zul'jin learned that the high elves had not discovered how his missing rogues entered their territory and ordered his forces to begin their attack, with allies soon to arrive. In Silvermoon City, Kael'thas's mother gave him a Hawkstrider, while Anasterian maintained his separation from her and arranged for an old mage's disciple to meet the prince.

  • Zul'jin questioned a Troll priest about missing rogues and learned the high elves had not uncovered their route into the interior.
  • After hearing that the elf prince born 200 years ago had arrived, Zul'jin ordered the Trolls to take action and said their allies would soon come.
  • Kael'thas's mother heard from the riding instructor that Kael'thas had bonded with the white Hawkstrider she gave him.
  • Anasterian told the old mage he would not let Kael'thas's frail mother influence the prince's upbringing, though he had allowed her to give him the Hawkstrider.
  • Anasterian learned the old mage had sent his disciple out to meet His Highness and hoped she would put her arrogance to use.

Ch. 37Interlude (Part Two)

Kael'sala secured Anasterian's approval to fight under the identity of Sylvanas, hoping to build her standing alongside Kael'thas. At the battlefield, Liadrin treated the injured Solarian, who declared that she was destined to serve Kael'thas.

  • Kael'sala explained to Anasterian that using her identity as Sylvanas would let her fight at full strength, and Anasterian approved the plan.
  • Anasterian revealed to himself that Kael'sala's plan served his own interests and decided to let their political game continue.
  • Liadrin healed the injured Solarian, who corrected her title and explained that she sensed only the general aura of the future.
  • Solarian told Liadrin that she needed only Kael'thas and considered herself destined to serve him.

Ch. 38Sylvanas

Kael'thas reached the Sanctum of the Sun and met his new commander, Sylvanas, whose identity and future fate left him shaken. The chapter ended with him trying to convince himself that she was not the Sylvanas he knew from history.

  • Kael'thas rode with Audilon Firewing and other elves toward the front, passing the road to the human kingdoms and the fortress of Deatholme.
  • Kael'thas arrived at the Sanctum of the Sun and completed his quest to reach the command post.
  • Audilon noted that many inexperienced recruits had been sent to the front, while the young elves drew confidence from Kael'thas's calm bearing.
  • Alleria saw Kael'thas in the square and compared his bearing to Sylvanas's.
  • Sylvanas introduced herself to Kael'thas as his new commander, and he realized she was the girl who had shared seven years of music with him.
  • Kael'thas remembered Sylvanas's tragic future and tried to deny that she could be the same person he knew from history.

Ch. 39Solarian

Sylvanas reassigned Kael'thas and Audilon to another team, where Liadrin and Solarian joined them. Kael'thas welcomed Solarian as his loyal follower, but she stepped away from him after recognizing Audilon’s loyalty.

  • Sylvanas read the orders removing Kael'thas and Audilon from her team and arranged for them to join another team.
  • Liadrin ran to greet Kael'thas, and Alleria confirmed that Liadrin would be on his team.
  • Solarian arrived, knelt before Kael'thas, and reported herself as his most loyal astromancer.
  • Kael'thas welcomed Solarian in the name of Sunstrider and invited her to stay by his side.
  • Audilon challenged Solarian, but she acknowledged his loyalty and chose to stand beside him instead.
  • Alleria noticed a flicker of dejection in Solarian’s eyes.

Ch. 40A New Squad

Kael'thas took command of a small, inexperienced squad assigned to patrol the mountains south of An'owyn for Troll infiltrators. After reaching their forest post and choosing a lakeside campsite, he divided the squad's duties and set out to hunt for lunch.

  • Kael'thas learned his newly formed squad had only fifteen members, and Solarian warned them not to relax near the front lines.
  • The unit commander assigned Kael'thas's squad to search the mountains and forests below the Sunwell for Trolls who had slipped past the front.
  • Kael'thas led the squad south to their patrol area, where Xiao Ao found a small lake suitable for a campsite.
  • Kael'thas assigned Liadrin and the Priests to pitch tents, Solarian to direct trap placement, and the others to help prepare the camp.
  • Kael'thas accepted Audilon's company and went hunting to complete his quest to kill five animals for lunch.

Ch. 41For Quel'Thalas

Kael'thas led his squad through a day of hunting and surveying their assigned woodland, then played a song by the lake that stirred the elves' memories of Quel'Thalas. The night ended with Audilon's rousing cry being answered by the squad—and with everyone beating him for interrupting the song.

  • Kael'thas and Audilon hunted rabbits, and the system gave Kael'thas quests for hunting more animals and helping prepare lunch.
  • Liadrin and the priests prepared the game while Solarian and Audilon invited Kael'thas to sit on the tallest boulder; Kael'thas instead joined the food preparation.
  • Kael'thas's squad surveyed their mountainous woodland, set traps and alarms, and found no sign of Trolls before returning to the lake.
  • After dinner, Kael'thas, Solarian, and the others discussed how to divide their future work, then Kael'thas played a melody on a leaf flute beneath the stars.
  • Solarian hummed along, and the song moved the squad to recall Quel'Thalas and shout their loyalty to their homeland and Kael'thas.
  • Audilon's shouting disrupted the song, so the squad members and Liadrin swarmed him and beat him while Kael'thas went to sleep.

Ch. 42Changes

Kael'thas's squad searched the forested mountains for Troll rogues, who could evade the elves' usual detection methods. After a neighboring squad found clues suggesting a Troll had entered their territory, Kael'thas ordered everyone to search and asked Solarian what she had in mind.

  • Solarian explained why the elves sent newcomers to search the mountains and warned the squad to face Troll rogues carefully.
  • Kael'thas cautioned the elves against charging recklessly, reminding them that rogues used deadly poison.
  • Kael'thas reached level 22 and completed his analysis of Fireball while the squad searched for days without finding Trolls.
  • A neighboring squad found ration crumbs in a rabbit's mouth and sent word that a Troll might have entered Kael'thas's territory.
  • Liadrin and others questioned whether the Troll had passed through, but Kael'thas argued that any Troll who reached them would be clever enough to evade traps and colorless powder.
  • Solarian and Audilon insisted the squad must search thoroughly, and Kael'thas ordered everyone to move out before asking Solarian for her plan.

Ch. 43Colorless Powder

Kael'thas used Solarian’s sensed location to ambush and defeat five Troll rogues, completing two quests. After testing the colorless powder on a Troll corpse, he received a new quest to investigate it, leaving him suspecting it had helped the rogues evade detection.

  • Solarian sensed that the Trolls would pass through a forest area about three hundred meters wide, and Kael'thas's squad found that the traps and colorless powder showed no signs of being triggered.
  • Kael'thas realized the Trolls could bypass the trapped slopes by climbing over a rock using nearby trees, so he ordered the squad to hide and wait in ambush.
  • When five Troll rogues climbed onto the rock, Kael'thas struck them with Flamestrike and ordered the elves to attack as they scattered.
  • Kael'thas's squad trapped and defeated the Trolls, completing the Find the Trolls and Eliminate the Trolls quests.
  • Kael'thas sprinkled colorless powder on a Troll corpse, and after the mage sensed it, Kael'thas received a quest to investigate the powder.

Ch. 44Let's Run Away

Kael'thas and his companions ambushed and defeated another group of Trolls, while Kael'thas tested a new fire-infused sword technique and uncovered how the Trolls had passed through undetected. After the battle, Solarian urged Kael'thas to flee, leaving the reason for her alarm unknown.

  • Kael'thas and his companions waited in ambush until six Troll rogues appeared, then attacked them.
  • Kael'thas combined Fireball with his rune sword, setting one Troll ablaze and keeping him from using Stealth.
  • Kael'thas suspected the moss on the Troll was hiding the effect of the colorless powder, explaining how the Trolls had gone undetected.
  • Kael'thas blasted the Troll with Arcane Explosion, and Solarian killed him with an ice arrow after he launched a blue signal flare.
  • Kael'thas completed the quest, but Solarian turned pale and told him to run away.

Ch. 45We Can't Let Him Succeed

Kael'thas's squad ignored Solarian's warning and stayed in the forest, but a quest to escape alerted him to danger. An advanced-class Troll Rogue appeared, revealed he had come looking for Kael'thas's brother, and threatened to kill Kael'thas for amusement.

  • Kael'thas stayed with the squad despite Solarian's warning, and they spent several days hunting Troll Rogues.
  • When Solarian sensed an ominous presence, Kael'thas received the quest Escape the Devil's Clutches and gathered everyone.
  • A Troll Rogue answered Kael'thas's challenge and emerged from the forest.
  • Solarian recognized the Troll as an advanced-class Rogue, far stronger than anyone in the squad.
  • The Troll said he had watched the squad while searching for Kael'thas's brother, then threatened to kill Kael'thas and send his head to his family.
  • Audilon and the squad members swore they would not let the Troll succeed, even if they died.

Ch. 46We Must See It Through

Kael'thas used an immobilization scroll to escape a Troll rogue, then ordered his party to scatter and draw the pursuer away. As the others fled, Audilon caught up with Kael'thas and vowed to protect him.

  • Kael'thas pinned the Troll rogue to a tree with an immobilization scroll, but warned the party the effect could be broken and urged them to flee.
  • Kael'thas activated an alarm and led the party down the mountain on their hawkstriders.
  • Solarian advised everyone to split up and divert the Troll, and Kael'thas ordered the party to scatter at the next crossroads.
  • Liadrin resolved to leave a trail to lure the Troll away, while Solarian asked Kael'thas's phoenix to follow her.
  • Kael'thas realized he had marked his own route with a scent the Troll could track, but Audilon caught up and promised to protect him.

Ch. 47I'll Make Sure to Protect Him from Now On

Kael'thas and Audilon fled the Troll rogue, who caught up to them on a leopard, but Kael'thas injured the leopard's eyes and escaped with Audilon. The Troll pursued them on foot, while Audilon resolved to protect Kael'thas from then on.

  • Kael'thas threw his scented pouch into the forest and asked Audilon how they could hide from the pursuing Troll.
  • The Troll caught up on a leopard and attacked them with glowing blade arcs, which Audilon blocked while Xiao Bai dodged.
  • Kael'thas infused Fireballs into his sword and struck the leopard's eyes with flaming attacks, forcing it to disappear and throwing the Troll to the ground.
  • The Troll used Sprint to pursue Kael'thas and Audilon after they escaped on Xiao Bai.
  • Audilon apologized for failing to protect Kael'thas and resolved to guard him from then on.

Ch. 48Had He Completed the Quest?

Kael'thas and Audilon tried to evade the pursuing Troll rogue with a series of diversions through the forest. After Kael'thas sensed Xiao Ao approaching with reinforcements, they headed toward the phoenix, though it remained unclear whether the quest was complete.

  • Kael'thas stopped at a river and sent the Hawkstriders running ahead while he and Audilon escaped downstream along the bank.
  • Kael'thas and Audilon climbed through several trees to conceal their wet footprints, then summoned their mounts and rode away.
  • The Troll rogue noticed the Hawkstriders' tracks had changed and angrily pursued them downstream.
  • Kael'thas sensed Xiao Ao approaching, likely with reinforcements, and rode with Audilon toward the phoenix.

Ch. 49Live Like a Sun

Kael'thas fled the Troll Rogue with Xiao Bai while Astromancer Solarian and the rangers raced to rescue him. Audilon died protecting Kael'thas, who was left grieving as Audilon entrusted his future and Quel'Thalas to Solarian.

  • Xiao Ao found Kael'thas, and Astromancer Solarian’s voice revealed that rescuers were approaching, but the Troll Rogue continued pursuing him.
  • Audilon charged the Troll Rogue to protect Kael'thas, was poisoned, and urged the prince to keep riding toward the rescuers.
  • Kael'thas reached Sylvanas and the rangers, and Sylvanas drew her bow on the Troll Rogue as he sprinted toward the prince.
  • Audilon intercepted the Troll Rogue’s final attack, and Kael'thas saw the dagger pierce Audilon’s chest before Sylvanas’s arrow struck the Troll Rogue.
  • Audilon died in Kael'thas’s arms after asking him to live like a sun, and he silently begged Solarian to protect their king.

Ch. 50Living for You Alone

After Audilon Firewing was laid to rest, Kael'thas agreed to establish a force named Firewing and learned why Solarian had separated the group during their battle. Solarian said she had acted to preserve Kael'thas's chance of survival, leaving their relationship strained by her choices.

  • Liadrin and the Priests sang the Lament of the Highborne as guards carried Audilon Firewing's coffin toward Fairbreeze Village.
  • Kael'thas accepted his former teammates' pleas to return to his service and agreed to name their future force Firewing in honor of the fallen Warrior.
  • The remaining teammates departed, leaving Liadrin and Solarian with Kael'thas.
  • Kael'thas confronted Solarian about her choices during the battle, and she explained that she had foreseen Audilon's death and believed the group would otherwise perish.
  • Solarian told Kael'thas that his phoenix had offered the only slim chance of survival and privately resolved to live for him alone.
