The True Lone Wolf of the Apocalypse
The survivors of the Gentleman Convoy didn't hesitate for long when choosing a convoy.
Time wouldn't allow them to delay.
Whether or not they chose to join, the Dawn Alliance's two convoys wouldn't wait around forever.
In the end, Shen Li, Ma Wuyuan, and three-fifths of the Gentleman Convoy's survivors chose to join the Fairness Convoy.
The main reason was Zheng Alin's burst of power when she broke through at the last moment. Her performance had been outstanding.
She had also managed to kill Jiang Yanming.
She seemed powerful and reassuring.
On top of that, the Fairness Convoy didn't take a cut.
The remaining two-fifths of the survivors, along with Yang Xiaomei, the Cat Bus, who hadn't lifted a finger throughout the earlier battle, chose to join Chen Fan's Mortal Convoy.
They felt that Chen Fan was willing to take responsibility. When no one else had stepped forward, he had been the first to send someone down to face the pervert Jiang Yanming.
Chen Fan hadn't expected his Mortal Convoy to lose this competition.
That left him somewhat annoyed.
On reflection, it was all Brother Shu's fault for trying so hard. He wasn't even taking a ten percent cut.
Damn apocalyptic tryhard!
Everyone from the Gentleman Convoy had chosen to join.
Once most people had made their choice, it no longer mattered even if the few remaining people were unwilling.
They didn't have the courage to split off and survive on their own.
With the three convoys sorted out, they were making their final preparations.
They were packing their belongings and arranging places for everyone. Once everything was in order, they would set off immediately.
Just then, another figure came slowly down the distant road.
Many people in the convoy noticed the figure.
Some even stopped what they were doing to look.
For no other reason than that it was a lone person.
No convoy, no companions, not even a vehicle.
Just one person walking steadily along the roadside.
Chen Fan craned his neck to look as well.
Well, would you look at that? People like that really exist?
He had heard of lone wolves of the apocalypse before. Some people chose to travel alone after the apocalypse.
Whether it was to avoid complicated dealings with other people or for fear that a large group would attract abominations,
a small number of people had chosen this way of surviving.
But three months into the apocalypse, most such people existed only in stories.
The reason was simple: abominations were unpredictably powerful, while humans who awakened extraordinary powers had to grow stronger step by step.
No matter how strong a person was, once they encountered a stronger abomination, it meant "total annihilation."
Although convoys attracted abominations more easily than a lone person, they could abandon part of the group to ensure that at least some survived.
In the three months since the apocalypse, Chen Fan had only heard of lone wolves.
This was the first time he had seen one with his own eyes.
When the man drew closer, everyone saw clearly that he was a young and exceptionally handsome monk.
The monk's eyes were narrowed, making it hard to tell whether they were small or simply not open.
His head was shaved, but that didn't detract from his handsome face in the slightest.
Even Chen Fan had to admit that the man was eighty percent as handsome as he was.
A long string of prayer beads, each the size of a ping-pong ball, hung around his neck, reaching almost to his abdomen.
He wore gray monastic robes and a kasaya, which were now somewhat tattered.
He held a dark alms bowl in his left hand and a simple monk's staff in his right, using it to support himself as he walked.
Chen Fan was still a little bothered by how few people he had recruited.
Now that another passerby had suddenly appeared, he casually called out, "Hey, monk! Traveling alone is no fun, and it's dangerous too. Why not join the Dawn Alliance's Mortal Convoy?"
The narrow-eyed monk stopped and turned toward Chen Fan.
His eyes curved into even narrower slits, and a smile appeared on his lips.
"This humble monk is Huishi. Since you have invited me, benefactor, I would be honored to accept."
Chen Fan was startled when the monk agreed.
A lone wolf had actually accepted his invitation?
He had only asked casually and hadn't expected the monk to agree.
Still, since the man had agreed, he welcomed him.
Looking at him, Chen Fan nodded and said, "You don't have a vehicle, so walk behind the convoy. Don't worry. Now that you've joined us, you won't have to worry too much about safety."
If they really encountered great danger, worrying wouldn't help anyway.
"Amitabha!"
Huishi smiled and chanted.
He turned and joined the convoy.
Before long, the convoy finished its preparations and set off again.
In the BMW SUV at the rear, Wang Bing held her crystal ball and slowly stroked it.
Her brows gradually furrowed.
The convoy was back on the road, and Chen Fan sat in his RV with two materials on the table before him.
They had been obtained by looting Jiang Yanming's vehicle.
Since both convoys had taken part, the supplies had to be divided.
In the end, Chen Fan took the two abomination materials from Jiang Yanming's vehicle. There wasn't much else in the way of food, water, clothes, bedding, and so on, so he gave it all to the people from the Fairness Convoy.
On the Mortal Convoy's side, Li Yuanyuan hadn't participated in the battle, so she didn't get a share.
As for Qian Lei, he deserved some credit for leading the way.
But Qian Lei had no shortage of food or drink, and he had agreed on a method of dividing supplies with Chen Fan when he first joined.
Normally, he wouldn't take a share, but when he truly lacked daily necessities, Chen Fan would provide them.
In exchange, he would lead the convoy.
It was much the same as when Qian Lei had first been with the Fierce Fish Convoy.
Back then, Qian Lei had rarely returned to the convoy either, and whenever he needed a tent, clothes, bedding, or anything like that, Lao Mo had provided them for free.
As for food, Qian Lei ordered three Pin Hao Fan meals a day, complete with meat, vegetables, and drinks. He ate much better than most of the convoy's survivors.
Sometimes, even Chen Fan didn't eat as well as he did.
Pin Hao Fan was not to be underestimated. Besides fast food like braised pork over rice and boxed meals, some stir-fry restaurants also offered special deals on the platform.
Barbecue, lamb soup, dumplings, stir-fried chicken set meals... it had everything.
Though they didn't necessarily use good ingredients...
And basically every set meal came with a sweet drink, so he never lacked anything to drink.
What was there to complain about with such a low-maintenance teammate?
Chen Fan sometimes even gave him supplies unprompted, worried that the kid wouldn't know to ask.
The two abomination items on the table were a finger with a sharp nail and a length of intestine.
Chen Fan didn't think much of them. He didn't think he could make much of a magical artifact with them, so he simply refined them directly.
He summoned the Artifact Refining Furnace and put both items inside.
[Refined a first-tier eerie material. Obtained 100 points of Origin Artifact Materials] [Refined a first-tier monster's severed body part. Obtained 10 points of Origin Artifact Materials]
He had 1,010 points remaining.
Chen Fan was taken aback. Why did the intestine give so little?
But from the Artifact Refining Furnace's notifications, he quickly guessed that the finger must have been a drop from an eerie entity, representing the essence of the entire entity.
The length of intestine, on the other hand, was just part of a monster's body.
An entire first-tier monster only gave 100 points, so 10 points for a length of intestine was reasonable.
In a van farther back in the convoy, several middle-aged women were using the fabric he had given them to sew a long white robe.
His requirements weren't demanding; it didn't need to be particularly finely made.
Once it was sewn, he would refine it into a magical artifact, and the flaws would be corrected automatically.
Then, presumably, he would have a set of ethereal, immortal-looking robes.
Later, when he flew on his sword, his magical robes would transform automatically.
Clad in white, who would dare not call him a sword immortal?
The thought delighted him.
After another two hours on the road, the convoy reached the village Wang Bing had foreseen.
Qian Lei had contacted Chen Fan over the walkie-talkie about fifteen minutes earlier, when he had already reached the edge of the village.
Chen Fan learned from him that the village was called Nanwushan Village.
Qian Lei said his intuition told him there was danger in the village, but not much.
It was the sort of place they could loot as long as they were careful.
When Chen Fan and the others arrived, Qian Lei was waiting outside the village.
He had no shortage of supplies, so he wasn't very eager to venture into the village. He placed more importance on his duty as a scout.
So after reaching the village, he didn't go in, instead waiting where he was for the main group.
If he sensed danger, he would even ride his little electric scooter back.
His approach was all about playing it safe and staying cautious.
At the village entrance, Chen Fan got out of the vehicle and looked inside.
It was a scene of desolation and ruin.
The village looked quiet, without a single person-or monster-in sight.
But Chen Fan knew there couldn't really be nothing there.
Since the apocalypse, no village was completely safe.
Chen Fan didn't intend to drive in. Instead, he summoned the Nightmare Battle Cloud.
He stepped onto the black cloud, and dark vapor spread from it, completely enveloping him.
Then Chen Fan rode the black cloud into the village.
The Nightmare Battle Cloud could block detection, making it perfect for entering the village to loot while avoiding abominations.
Seeing Chen Fan take the lead and enter the village in one direction, Li Yuanyuan, Nie Shufeng, and the others looked around before slowly following him in.
Many survivors followed behind them.
Their thinking was simple: following extraordinary people had to be safer.
Chen Fan in particular made quite a display. That black cloud looked impressive, and the largest number of survivors followed him.
