Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Second-tier supernatural 16 Already at this tier when introduced. His ability grants one Calabash Brother’s powers per tier, giving him great strength, giant transformation, clairvoyance, and superhuman hearing. He later describes his advancement as tempering his soul into a more condensed, higher-quality state 24.

Appearance

  • Glasses: Wears glasses, later explicitly shown to be lensless 15 40.
  • Calabashes: Carries two calabashes at his waist; a red gourd is used before his giant transformation, while an orange gourd serves as a water vessel 16 22 26.
  • Giant form: Grows to approximately five meters tall when using his strength-and-size ability 22 36.

Personality

Nie Shufeng favors cooperation and caution over unnecessary battles. He proposes an alliance that preserves each convoy’s independence while committing them to mutual aid. Having observed groups die after deliberately seeking out monsters, he instead follows a policy of detecting and avoiding threats 16 42.

His concern for fairness has practical limits. He objects when Chen Fan tries to recruit surrendering supernaturals with weapons still pointed at them, and his group compensates survivors after an exhausting journey prompted by Wang Bing’s divination. Nevertheless, he offers Chen Fan only a verbal apology for the same ordeal 28 39.

He is also a shrewd competitor. During recruitment, he conspicuously praises Zheng Alin to remind prospective members that the fighter who killed their former captain belongs to his convoy. His banter with Chen Fan mixes genuine cooperation with rivalry over recruits, supplies, and which convoy deserves first place in the alliance 21 28.

Despite his caution, Nie Shufeng remains committed to survival rather than resignation. When Chen Fan questions humanity’s future, he argues that they must fight to create a glimmer of dawn even if none seems to exist 41.

Abilities & Skills

Vajra Calabash Brothers

His supernatural ability grants the powers of one Calabash Brother with each tier 16.

  • Tier-linked abilities: By the second tier, he possesses the first brother’s strength and enlargement powers and the second brother’s clairvoyance and superhuman hearing 16.
  • Supernatural price: The cost can temporarily make him behave childishly. He plays with pebbles as imaginary cars, complete with engine sounds, and later recognizes Chen Fan’s teasing once the episode has passed 40 41.
  • Earlier symptoms: Wang Bing attributes his enthusiastic admiration of Chen Fan’s theatrical “Immortal Master” display to his supernatural price acting up 25.

Great Strength and Giant Transformation

Nie Shufeng can transform into a five-meter giant with enough strength to stop and throw a moving car 22.

  • Drinks from his red gourd immediately before transforming during the battle with Killer Jisen 22.
  • Stops Jisen’s charging vehicle with his hands, then throws both the car and its attacker away 22.
  • Hurls an enlarged boulder at Huishi, concealing Zheng Alin’s approach behind it 37.
  • Launches Wu Zhiyou like a spear in a coordinated attack against Huishi 38.
  • Limit: Huishi’s ten-meter prayer bead initially drives him back; he pushes it away only after Huishi’s control becomes distracted 38.

Clairvoyance and Clairaudience

His long-distance sight and hearing make him a principal scout for the convoy 17.

  • Range: Can see forty-seven kilometers away 46.
  • Reconnaissance: Counts vehicles and survivors, listens to conversations, and estimates enemy strength and organization 26 41.
  • Positioning: His perception does not become stronger simply by placing his vehicle at the front of the convoy 17.
  • Information limit: These senses provide ordinary visual and auditory information, not automatic knowledge of another person’s powers. He must infer abilities from observed behavior 26.
  • Lighting limit: Clairvoyance is of little use at night without electricity or adequate light 34.
  • Concealment countermeasure: Chen Fan’s Nightmare Battle Cloud shields its interior from outside observation and is intended to counter Nie Shufeng’s distant sight and hearing 18.

Leadership and Negotiation

  • Alliance building: Proposes cooperation between independent convoys and later helps approve the Red Yellow Green Convoy’s admission 16 44.
  • Route coordination: Combines reconnaissance with Wang Bing’s divination, relaying threats and travel decisions over the radio 18 34 45.
  • Formation planning: Places Han Tai’s vehicle at the front so his Traffic Light ability can assist with scouting 45.
  • Trade: Negotiates exchanges of supplies, fuel, and information with other convoys 42.
  • Risk communication: Warns survivors before entering the Dead Fog and allows them to decide whether to follow 46.

Equipment / Items

  • Red calabash — Drinks from it before enlarging into his giant form 22.
  • Orange calabash — Holds water; he drinks from it and uses its water to wash his eyes after an unpleasant reconnaissance discovery 26.
  • Lensless glasses — Worn during his childlike episode 40.
  • SUV — His vehicle during the alliance’s travels 22 26.
  • Walkie-talkie — Used to report threats and coordinate movement and combat 18 22 26.
  • Loudspeaker — Used to explain the decision to enter the Dead Fog to following survivors 46.

Relationships

  • Chen Fan — Allied captain, Dawn Alliance co-founder, and recruitment rival. Their cooperation includes joint battles, trade negotiations, and alliance expansion, while their rivalry produces frequent teasing and competition 16 22 28 42 44.
  • Wang Bing — Fairness Convoy companion whose divination guides his decisions. He initially trusts her warnings despite finding no threat himself, later orders her to rest, and confronts Huishi after witnessing her disappearance 33 34 36 39.
  • Zheng Alin — Fairness Convoy fighter. He uses her achievements to promote the convoy during recruitment and coordinates with her against Huishi 28 37.
  • Wu Zhiyou — Fairness Convoy fighter and combat partner. Their combination attack turns Wu Zhiyou into a living projectile aimed at Huishi 16 38.
  • Han Tai — Trading partner who becomes a fellow Dawn Alliance captain. Nie Shufeng warns him against deliberately provoking monsters and supports his convoy’s admission after its internal split 42 44.
  • Huishi — Enemy responsible for Wang Bing’s disappearance. Nie Shufeng exposes his suspicious conduct and joins the battle against him 36 37 38.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Alliance with the Mortal Convoy

Nie Shufeng proposes a loose alliance with Chen Fan’s group: both convoys retain their independence but assist one another in danger. During their formal introductions, he identifies himself as the Fairness Convoy’s captain and reveals that he is already a second-tier supernatural 16.

His distant perception complements Wang Bing’s divination and Qian Lei’s more position-dependent danger sense. Chen Fan consequently begins comparing both groups’ scouting information when planning travel 17.

Killer Jisen

At a gas station, Nie Shufeng recognizes Killer Jisen as a second-tier anomaly and orders a retreat. When Jisen appears within the fleeing convoy, he warns the others that the anomaly is hunting their supernaturals and cannot simply be outrun 21 22.

He leads the counterattack in giant form, stopping and throwing Jisen’s car. After Chen Fan dismembers and seals the anomaly, Nie Shufeng urges the convoy to leave before further trouble arrives 22.

Formation of the Dawn Alliance

After the Gentleman Convoy loses its captain, Nie Shufeng and Chen Fan compete to recruit its survivors. Nie Shufeng challenges Chen Fan’s use of intimidation against Shen Li and Ma Wuyuan and advertises the Fairness Convoy through Zheng Alin’s contribution to the victory 28.

He proposes Dawn Alliance as their shared name, explaining that their cooperation exists to survive the apocalypse and seek a glimmer of dawn. Most of the Gentleman Convoy’s survivors subsequently join the Fairness Convoy 28 29.

The Twenty-Six-Hour Journey and Huishi

Trusting Wang Bing’s warning of an unidentified threat, Nie Shufeng keeps the convoy moving despite finding nothing with his own senses. After twenty-six hours, mounting exhaustion and fuel shortages force him to order a rest 34.

When Wang Bing disappears, he reveals that he saw Huishi beside her vehicle immediately beforehand. He confronts the monk, identifies him as a third-tier supernatural, and fights him alongside the alliance’s other combatants. His contributions include the boulder-assisted approach for Zheng Alin and the combination attack with Wu Zhiyou 36 37 38.

After Huishi’s defeat, Nie Shufeng helps the exhausted Wang Bing, while his group distributes food and gasoline to survivors as compensation for the ordeal 39.

Expansion and Passage Through the Dead Fog

Nie Shufeng helps negotiate with Han Tai’s Red Yellow Green Convoy, rejects its strategy of deliberately seeking life-or-death battles, and later supports its entry into the Dawn Alliance 42 44.

When threats close in from multiple directions, he reports Living Fog ahead and a Silent Monster pursued by a black shadow behind the convoy. He suggests the nearby Dead Fog as a possible escape route, then explains the risks to the survivors before entry 45 46.

During the crossing, he orders everyone to remain quiet and move faster after the discovery of a colossal monster. His vehicle is among the first to emerge from the fog 48.

Notable Quotes

“Since we call ourselves the Dawn Alliance, we should firmly believe that a glimmer of dawn still exists. Even if this apocalypse really is dark and lightless, we'll fight for that glimmer of dawn ourselves. Don't give up. Keep struggling...” 41

“If there really is danger, the whole convoy will face it with you.” — To Wang Bing when ordering her to rest 34
