Background / History

Joining the Household and Receiving His Nickname

Initially called Dabao, Yuanyuan is shown nursing in Su Wanqing’s care before she brings him to Lin Yi’s home, where Tangtang and the infant caregiver Zhang Meilan are waiting 20 21.

Lin Yi chooses Yuanyuan from tuantuan yuanyuan, an expression associated with the family being together. He remarks that Tangtang could have been called Tuantuan if she had not already received a nickname. Su Wanqing accepts his choice, and the usually quiet Yuanyuan responds with lively babbling 25.

Vaccinations

Yuanyuan’s first vaccination after birth reportedly leaves him crying and needing half a day of comforting. Remembering this, Su Wanqing worries about his next injection 30.

At Magic City First Maternity Hospital, he initially enjoys watching the people around him, but starts crying after hearing another baby wail. During his hepatitis B vaccination, Lin Yi holds his arm steady and comforts him afterward. His crying becomes quieter only when Lin Yi threatens to withhold his milk, and he then points toward the exit 32 33.

Parents’ Marriage and Family Visits

Concern that the twins will lack household registration prompts Jiang Yuehua to urge Lin Yi and Su Wanqing to register their marriage. Yuanyuan accompanies them to the Civil Affairs Bureau, where a willow leaf keeps him happily occupied while they wait. His parents subsequently receive their marriage certificates 34 36 38.

Yuanyuan later meets his great-grandfather Lin Zhengtai through a video call and demonstrates his ability to roll over. The family then travels from Magic City to the Imperial Capital aboard the Lin family’s private plane. At the old residence, he giggles in Lin Zhengtai’s arms, delighting the elder, who asks for a pellet drum to entertain him 45 46 49 50.

Appearance

• Build and complexion: Fair-skinned, soft and chubby, with rounded cheeks and small, plump hands 34 36.
• Eyes: Large, round and dark; he frequently watches unfamiliar people and surroundings intently 34 36 50.
• Expression: Often quiet and serious enough that Lin Yi describes him as resembling a handsome, taciturn young man 25 29.

Personality

Yuanyuan is generally the quieter twin. Su Wanqing says he has been calm since birth and rarely cries except when he needs food or sleep. Nevertheless, he protests when left out of a family hug and enjoys receiving praise and attention 25 30 34.

His reserved behavior changes noticeably outdoors. He eagerly watches passersby, enjoys looking through car and airplane windows, and becomes frustrated when he cannot reach something interesting. He is also comfortable being held by unfamiliar relatives, studying Jiang Xuan and Lin Zhengtai before babbling or giggling at them 32 35 36 50.

He has a large appetite and a pronounced dislike of injections. His toy preferences differ from Tangtang’s: rather than fluffy animals, he chooses excavators, tanks and airplanes, with planes singled out as his favorites 29 33 48 50.

Early Motor Development

• Independent rolling: First rolls onto his stomach while Lin Yi folds clothes. Zhang Meilan is surprised because, by her account, babies normally learn this at three or four months 34.
