Background and History

Previous Life and Arrival

Yu Tunzhou grew up in a welfare home and attended university with government assistance. Reassigned to folklore studies, he became his year’s only new student in the subject. His professors supported him personally and took him to ancient temples and Daoist monasteries; his principal field was ancient religious folklore 1.

During his third-year winter break, an earthquake struck while he was helping investigate an ancient ruin. He pushed his teacher away from a falling divine statue and was struck himself. He subsequently understood his arrival in the cultivation world as transmigration 1 259.

That explanation later became uncertain. Six years after his arrival, he learned that another “him” had survived the accident in his original world, spent a year in hospital, and returned home under his mentor’s care 259.

Survival in Luofu Grotto-Heaven

For three years, Yu Tunzhou delivered fish to the town’s thirty-nine households. Many treated him with indifference or pity, regarding him as someone destined to die. He sought instruction without accepting that survival required surrendering his dignity 1.

His defeat of Zhang Qinghe brought him into conflict with Zhang Pu, whose pressure Old Mo interrupted. Old Mo then negotiated instruction in Refining the True as compensation. Yu Tunzhou continued cultivating while gardening and helping clear an abandoned residence with Xie Linchuan 7 11 14.

Under Lu Huaiqing’s guidance, he developed his fist arts, confronted the Kunpeng Divine Intent’s ferocity, and resisted Heavenly Abhorrence. After forging his Immortal Foundation, he chose to leave with Old Mo, travel the jianghu, and pursue the Dragon and Tiger Ranking 66 80 84.

Early Jianghu Travels

Yu Tunzhou quickly earned the Reserve Ranking’s top position. At Lord Hibernating Dragon’s banquet, he stopped three attacks from Ao Qingxiao without leaving his seat, winning a wager that made the dragon his attendant 90 96.

Exploring the Heavenly Court ruins, he followed a fragment in his Dantian to a mysterious study and obtained the Vajra Bracelet. He later assumed Luo Nanwu’s identity to enter a Northern Plains grotto-heaven, accepting responsibilities toward Luo Nanwu’s enemies and younger brother 108 110.

Traveling west to challenge young experts, he helped Zhuang Yuan and Yuan Mengzhou rescue villagers from the Jin Household. He then joined Feng Yanleng’s party at Falling Star Gorge, using heavenly lightning against attacking bandits before entering the Xuandu inheritance gateway 121 122 124 135.

Dragon Gate Contest

At the Dragon Ascension Platform, Yu Tunzhou rejected Xie Linxue’s demand that he abandon Xie Linchuan. Although the arena suppressed Divine Abilities and Unity of Heaven and Celestial Person, he defeated Xie Linxue through physical strength 173.

He later challenged the gathered Dragon Gate contenders, fighting several leading talents while using their attacks to temper his Inner Heaven and Earth. Inside the Dragon Gate, the struggle expanded into a confrontation involving concealed identities, ancient treasures, and the Immortals and Gods behind the participants 186 190.

Eastern Wilderness and the Buddhist Kingdom

Investigating the Eastern Wilderness with Zhang Buyu brought Yu Tunzhou into conflict with the Yao and Nan households. The Yao Household sought to brand him a demonic cultivator after he destroyed its Jade Lion ancestral grounds and Alchemy Chamber. He subsequently joined An Ruyu, Lin Yueheng, and Xuanfa in severing the Nan Household’s connection to the Nine Netherworlds 205 211 216.

Within a seemingly peaceful Buddhist realm, he discovered violence beneath its outward serenity. After learning that the monk Mietian might be Kou Ziling’s avatar, he entered the Turbid Kingdom alone. Destroying more than ninety temples in two days earned blessings that temporarily raised him to Nature-Seeing Heaven 234 240 243.

Return to the Heavenly Court

Yu Tunzhou and An Ruyu formed an explicit alliance during another Heavenly Court expedition. They escaped an attack by Zhang Xuan, Ning Li, and a tiger demon, then discovered dead Heavenly Court rulers and a claimant to Haotian’s inheritance 268 269 272.

In the ruined Peach of Immortality Garden, Yu Tunzhou obtained six unripe peaches and promised to rescue its surviving tree using the Vajra Bracelet. His connection to Xuandu remained central to the expedition’s mysteries; Xuandu ultimately stood as the Heavenly Court formation’s final barrier after the River Diagram and Luo River Diagram were removed 272 280.

Northern Plains Campaign and New Martial Arts

After returning, Yu Tunzhou targeted the Xie Household for its repeated attacks against him. He dismantled formation platforms across more than twenty cities, killed its Golden Crow formation spirit, and released stored True Solar Fire over North Mountain Commandery 282 284 290.

He introduced New Martial Arts in the Northern Plains, encountering clan plans to obstruct implementation through deliberate inaction and manufactured disorder. Its spread nevertheless caused his Qi of Dao and Virtue to grow rapidly 307 325.

Severed History and the Human Emperor’s Trial

The Muscle-Tendon Changing Classic enabled Yu Tunzhou to visit earlier eras, including encounters with the Human Emperor and instruction from his teacher in the primordial past. During one later journey, he glimpsed a wedding arranged by Laojun for Xuandu and returned believing that he had apparently married 296 312.

In the Human Emperor’s trial, Yu Tunzhou and An Ruyu spent three years in a reincarnation world containing the Dragon Lord. Yu Tunzhou challenged the Dragon Lord’s plan to reincarnate Immortals and Gods into humanity while culling the weak. The trial then transported them to the Immortal Heaven’s core, where they reunited with Han Wujiu 340.

Appearance

  • Youthful but unusually composed: His features retain boyishness early on, while his expression shows maturity beyond his apparent age 8.
  • Scholar-like presentation: Ordinary clothes, scant luggage, and restrained Blood Qi lead Jin Ting to mistake him for an unremarkable traveler 121.
  • Temporarily bald: A cultivation-related physical transformation leaves him without hair before the Falling Star Gorge expedition 135.
  • Azure or blue robes: Worn during later battles and travels 198 243.
  • Changeable features: Uses the Eight-Nine Mysterious Art to alter his bones, complexion, and bearing for disguises 205.

Personality

Yu Tunzhou’s determination begins with a refusal to be reduced to someone else’s charity. He wants to live, but distinguishes survival from submission: flattering powerful people will not make them respect him. He withstands Zhang Pu’s pressure rather than retract a justified accusation 1 7.

He combines that pride with practical cunning. Mud, ambushes, a brick, false appearances, and concealed equipment are all acceptable tools. He prefers dependable comrades over the uncertain satisfaction of converting enemies into friends 7 40 50 131 135.

His chivalry rests on basic obligations toward other people rather than claims of personal goodness. He helps rescue villagers because remaining human is reason enough to act. Conversely, he refuses to save the hostile Xie Heyu merely because the man invokes his kinship with Xie Linchuan 122 242.

As his strength grows, his ambition becomes openly confrontational. He challenges leading talents collectively and refuses demands for submission from ancient powers, while still weighing their limitations and the risks of provoking them 186 190 272.
