Title and Succession
- Origin of the title: Later generations honored the youngest, most brilliant, and most promising leader of humanity’s ancient campaigns as the Human Emperor 225.
- Basis of authority: His defining achievement was using the Human Dao to govern the Heavenly Dao, establishing human rule over the world 218 309.
- Succession to the throne is not the same as attaining his position: Sage Emperor Yu was cultivated as his heir, but Lü Bairen’s later ambition is explicitly described as becoming a second Human Emperor 225 332.
- Inheritance is not restricted to blood descendants: Any human who refines Human Dao Fortune can qualify as his successor, sense his Immortal Heaven, and borrow its power 331.
| Figure | Connection to the Title |
|---|---|
| Yan | Original Human Emperor and the source of the title’s historical achievements 225 338. |
| Sage Emperor Yu | Heir raised jointly by the Human Emperor and the Buddhist School; succeeded him and quelled the ensuing struggle for power 225. |
| Lü Bairen / Peerless Imperial Lord | Attempted to replace the Human Emperor in the Long River of Time. Later accounts state that he had already replaced part of the original emperor’s path 310 338. |
| Yu Tunzhou | Receives several of his legacies and is proposed as a potential ruler and successor; he is not confirmed to have attained the title 159 218 331. |
Replacing the Human Emperor
- A claimant following Lü Bairen’s route must take the original emperor’s place in the Long River of Time, repeat his deeds, face his enemies, and retrace his historical path 310.
- His achievements can also be attacked rather than inherited. Huntian explains that destroying the humans he saved in High Antiquity could diminish his existence and strength 313.
- Demon Dao Lords interpret his failure to respond to Lü Bairen’s encroachment as evidence that he is dead or severely imperiled. This remains their assessment, not a confirmed death 338.
Background and History
Rise from the Eastern Wilderness
In early High Antiquity, humanity had lost the protection of Immortals and Gods. Its civilization had collapsed so thoroughly that even personal names were lost. Yan traveled among scattered human communities, witnessed their suffering, and vowed to overthrow the oppression of the other races 338 340.
He and his followers first pacified the Eastern Wilderness, then advanced into the Central Plains. Over several hundred years, they fought Immortals, Gods, devils, and the Demon Race. They drove the strongest demons overseas, sealed the Nine Netherworlds, and cut off Heaven Beyond Heaven, establishing humanity as the ruling race of the age 225.
Rule and Human Development
The Human Emperor created an Immortal Dao cultivation method suited to humanity, overcoming the incompatibility of earlier methods with human cultivators. After reaching the summit, he temporarily set aside his own advancement to study the hundred schools, alchemy, artifact refining, farming, and irrigation for humanity’s benefit 331 339.
He originally intended to turn his Inner Heaven and Earth into an eternal refuge where humans could live and multiply. He abandoned that project for unspecified reasons and instead concentrated on forging the Central Plains; Human Dao Fortune emerged from this later work 335.
His rule also influenced everyday clothing. From early-to-middle High Antiquity onward, close-fitting, practical garments displaced flowing robes among ordinary humans 302.
Severing Reincarnation
According to Long Jifeng, the Human Emperor severed reincarnation to prevent ancient Immortals and Gods trapped in the past or lower realms from returning through rebirth. The Taicang Long Clan opposed this decision, arguing that such beings could reincarnate as humans and become allies 266.
The measure did not prevent every ancient being from returning. Long Jifeng cites these exceptions as evidence against the emperor’s policy, while Yu Tunzhou recognizes that the dispute concerned who would be allowed to enter humanity through reincarnation 266.
Departure and Uncertain Fate
Before disappearing in middle-to-late High Antiquity, the Human Emperor constructed numerous tombs across the Central Plains and four continents. Their differing inheritances and interwoven truths and falsehoods obscured the location of his true tomb 203.
Long Yan states that the emperor and the Buddhist School had prepared Sage Emperor Yu as his successor. Under this account, Yu’s pacification of the succession crisis also provided grounds to remove former followers whose military power and ambitions threatened the new order 225.
Accounts of his final years remain incomplete and sometimes unverified:
| Account | Source and Qualification |
|---|---|
| Entered the separated primordial past alone and never returned | An Ruyu’s explanation of his disappearance 315. |
| Suffered a treacherous attack, recurring madness, and the killing of someone closest to him | A rumor transmitted by the Incense-Smelling Cult’s first leader; An Ruyu explicitly says it is unverified 340. |
| Killed his own daughter during an episode of madness | A version previously given to Yu Tunzhou by the Taicang Long Clan; not independently confirmed 340. |
| May have been buried within his Immortal Heaven | The Immortal Cauldron’s assessment, rather than a confirmed discovery 335. |
Personality and Ideals
The Human Emperor believed that humanity’s future rested on its countless ordinary members, not dependence on stronger races. His confidence that “a single spark could set the plains ablaze” contrasted with the Dragon Lord’s conviction that humans required the backing of ancient powers 339.
His guidance allowed individual paths rather than demanding imitation. When Yu Tunzhou admitted that he wanted only to survive, the emperor’s imprint accepted that desire and reshaped the Spark Instruction’s True Intention accordingly. Yu later understood this as consistent with an ideal in which everyone could become a dragon and their separate paths could converge into the Human Dao 5 331.
His treatment of other races changed over time. In his early years, he fiercely opposed the Demon Race, even striking its ancient Great Sages across time. Accounts of his later reign describe a broader outlook; the Immortal Heaven contains humans and demons working the fields together 338.
His mercy had limits, but old attachments could influence it. He spared Huntian for a future purpose and apparently preserved the Dragon Lord despite their fundamental opposition. The Dragon Lord claims that this reflected the emperor’s selfish desires as well as concern for humanity’s alternatives; that explanation is the Dragon Lord’s own 117 334 340.
Abilities and Skills
Human Dao Authority
The Human Emperor’s supreme authority placed humanity’s collective order above the Heavenly Dao 218.
- Heaven and Earth, Mountains and Rivers Seal: Used to govern the Heavenly Dao through the human way and suppress living beings beneath heaven 218.
- Human Dao Fortune: Left behind a power capable of empowering later rulers or benefiting large numbers of human cultivators 328 330 331.
- Possible Dao Fruit connection: Huntian suspects that Human Dao Fortune’s unusual permanence means the emperor left behind his Great Dao Fruit. This is a hypothesis, not a confirmed identification 328.
Power Across Time
His will and attacks could cross the boundaries between eras 117.
- Fired divine arrows through space and time while hunting Huntian; one pierced the Golden-Winged Great Peng’s wing despite its extraordinary speed 117.
- Projected his will through Yu Tunzhou, froze the palace crisis, and confronted hidden powers in the ruined Heavenly Court 117.
- Withdrew his gaze to prevent ancient powerhouses from tracing it back to Yu Tunzhou 117.
- Attacked Demon Race Great Sages from before High Antiquity and fought Demon Emperor Niangniang across a great distance 338.
- Remained vulnerable to attacks on his historical achievements and traces of existence 313.
Cultivation Methods
| Method | Contribution and Function |
|---|---|
| Spark Instruction | One of humanity’s earliest and most widely disseminated introductory methods. Historical accounts describe the emperor circulating it as a blazing millstone that crushed obstacles and converted foreign power to his use 76. |
| One Qi Breaks Ten Thousand Methods | A quasi-supreme art combining human Blood Qi, innate Sha Qi, and pure Martial Intention. It strips corruption from Fallen Immortal Qi and threatens practitioners of the Immortal Dao 212 213. |
| Human Emperor Seal technique | A transmitted Divine Ability and Daoist method, distinct from the actual seal treasure 218. |
| Book of Changes foundation | Identified by the emperor as a foundation for later generations; subsequently sealed away by the Daoist School 76. |
- Foresight: One Qi Breaks Ten Thousand Methods anticipates Martial Intention, although the Martial Dao would not arise until long after High Antiquity 212.
- Development limit: The method requires Martial Intention pure enough to contend with Heavenly Abhorrence before its three components can form a true spark and develop toward supreme-art status 212.
Three Corpses
The self-severing method produced new selves rather than ordinary split spirits or lingering obsessions. Each could exist independently while remaining connected to the others, with its own changes in fate 216.
| Corpse | Documented Condition |
|---|---|
| Benevolent Corpse | Associated with righteous, sheltering imperial majesty. Suspected to be behind Floating Hill Mountain’s suppressed portal 221 228. |
| Malevolent Corpse | Associated with savage, chaotic killing intent. Suspected to share the portal with the Benevolent Corpse 221 228. |
| Self-Obsession Corpse | Seen bound beneath the deep sea by nine chains, alternating between confusion and lucidity 228. |
Alchemy and Artifact Refining
- Alchemy lineage: Floating Hill Mountain inherited his Dao of Alchemy, though Feng Xu distinguishes this from his fuller, personally transmitted inheritance 91.
- Heavenly Origin Pill: Intended to repair or reforge Dao Foundations. Its actual effect was disastrous: it plundered the host’s foundation, bloodline, or special physique, turning the cultivator into a “human pill” 197.
- Divine Capital Grand Formation: Built upon the bones and Primordial Spirits of four Dao Lords he personally slew. At its peak, it could temporarily summon four Dao Lord-level city guardians 334.
Weapons and Relics
- Human Emperor Seal / Heaven and Earth, Mountains and Rivers Seal — One of his three supreme divine weapons. Yu Tunzhou’s fragment is identified as part of the genuine treasure, not a manifestation of the inherited seal technique 218 327.
- Dao-Severing Sword — One of the three supreme divine weapons he personally forged at his peak 327.
- Samsara Saber — The third supreme weapon. Mo Shougui identifies Great Hero Mo’s Mortal World as very likely the lost saber 327.
- Three Rankings of Heaven, Earth, and Man — Divine artifacts of providence left behind by him. The Human Ranking is also called the Dragon and Tiger Ranking 90.
- Immortal Cauldron — His last forged divine artifact and a companion of his final years. Left incomplete, it possesses the potential to reach the supreme level; its spirit acts as a minister entrusted with his legacy 216 225 230.
- Imitation Investiture of the Gods — Rumored to have been built around the original Investiture’s core. Even a fragment could recover regional authority over heaven, earth, mountains, and rivers 115.
- Bloodstained Peng feather — Left in the palace after his intervention across time; contains Huntian’s Primordial Spirit, which Yu Tunzhou later retrieves 117 119.
Inheritance and Descendants
Bloodline
- Many ancient households carry some of his blood, including the Jiang Household. These scattered branches are distinguished from his surviving direct line 302 327.
- He placed a restriction within his bloodline that prevented descendants from simply inheriting innate divine traits 330.
- The direct line disappeared into ordinary Northern Plains families and possessed a Nether Passage method connected to his Inner Heaven and Earth 302 315.
- Jixia Academy, the Ji Clan of Great Yan, and the Divine Capital Xiao Household participated in the plot against that secluded branch. The future Emperor Tianshun represented the Ji Clan before his accession 330.
- Great Hero Mo is suspected to be a direct descendant, with his possession of Mortal World serving as a major clue 327 328.
Immortal Heaven
- Structure: Reportedly consists of myriad heavens and worlds rather than the ordinary three heavens of heaven, earth, and man 337.
- Qualification: Refining Human Dao Fortune allows a human to sense it and qualify for the inheritance; direct descent is unnecessary 331 332.
- Opening the gateway: Requires Human Dao Fortune and guidance from the Three Rankings. Emperor Tianshun establishes that the Heaven Ranking can respond and open it 335.
- Initial trial: A bearer may seal their cultivation and share ordinary people’s hardships for three years, or patrol the world and kill ill-intentioned beings of other races 337.
- Time control: Participants experience different lengths of time, yet enter and leave the trial together 340.
- Dragon Lord condition: The Dragon Lord claims that he and Yan’s remaining consciousness agreed he would inherit everything if nobody passed the final trial 340.
Relationships
- Yu Tunzhou — Junior inheritor whom the emperor guides without requiring him to adopt an identical path. Yu later calls upon his will across time 5 117 331.
- Great Sage Huntian — Former enemy whom he hunted, suppressed, and deliberately preserved for a future age 117 159 334.
- Taicang Dragon Lord — Former close companion who became estranged over humanity’s reliance on ancient powers and the handling of reincarnation. During the trial, he defends his alliance with an ancient being and claims Yan preserved him as an alternative for humanity 225 266 339 340.
- Sage Emperor Yu — Prepared successor, jointly cultivated with the Buddhist School 225.
- Immortal Cauldron — Creation, companion, and entrusted guardian of his scattered inheritance 216 230.
- An Ruyu — Inheritor of secret records through the Incense-Smelling Cult and an active defender of his legacy; avenges the plot against his descendants 330 338.
- Lü Bairen — Rival claimant attempting to seize his attainment and replace his historical path; suspected by the Incense-Smelling Cult of contributing to his predicament 310 315 338.
