Background / History
Appointment to Huainan
Before taking power, Canglan was a minor imperial clansman who courted Sima Huanyu’s favor and treated Huanyu’s son, Sima Ruiming, warmly. In his youth, he had witnessed Huanyu use Imperial Grace of Rain and Dew to suppress Jiangnan 65 70.
When Huanyu fell unconscious after refining Divine Lord Mingyang’s true spirit, Canglan initially questioned whether the family should intervene. Sima Honglin instead offered him control of Huainan and the opportunity to pursue Golden Core cultivation. They agreed to conceal Huanyu’s fall while arranging the transfer of authority 64.
Honglin lent Canglan a bolt of spring thunder to guide Imperial Grace of Rain and Dew. Canglan used the technique over the dried-up Luo River, restoring its flow, reviving crops, and reassuring people frightened by signs of the dynasty’s declining mandate. The rain then spread toward Huainan as his procession advanced 65.
Establishing Azure Waves Heaven
Upon arriving in Huainan, Canglan publicly honored Ye Zhanxin by inviting him into his carriage. He sought assurances of the Ye Clan’s support and entrusted Zhanxin with the Guardian of Huainan seal and discretion over regional affairs 66.
Canglan renamed Huanyu’s Firmament Heaven Azure Waves Heaven and built a new political base through promotions, material rewards, and widespread appointments. Within ten days, Huainan’s officialdom had tripled. His purpose was to create enough beneficiaries that Huanyu’s established supporters could no longer oppose him safely 67.
He also doubled his nephews’ stipends while forbidding them to leave Azure Waves Heaven, depriving them of troops and practical authority. Over the following three years, Huanyu’s former subordinates were demoted, expelled, bought off, suppressed, or made to disappear. By the end of that period, Canglan had brought Huainan under his control 67 70.
Pursuit of Thunder Authority
Canglan’s ambitions extended beyond inheriting Huanyu’s water authority. He regarded rain without thunder as insufficiently commanding and sought the thunder of the nine heavens. He also recognized that Honglin’s borrowed spring thunder was a hidden danger within his body 65 67.
After Sima Chengzhao’s Northern Frontier victory, Canglan secured permission to hold a ceremony presenting captives at the ancestral temple. The intended blood sacrifice would use captive souls, military prestige, and the ceremony’s momentum to seek access to a surviving trace of Nine Heavens Thunder Origin. He ordered captives gathered from Huainan, Jiangnan, and the Ruin Realm, with similar-looking substitutes used if necessary 74 75.
Resenting Chengzhao’s acclaim, Canglan argued that his own extraction of Jiangnan’s wealth sustained the realm while others received the glory. He planned to turn the ceremony into public proof of his merit and a means of attaining Golden Core cultivation, and resolved that Chengzhao would eventually have to be eliminated 75.
Huainan Alchemy Gathering
Canglan selected the Thunder Nether Ninefold Mystery Divine Edict Pill as the gathering’s subject and treated the assembly as preparation for his ascent. He ordered skilled independent Alchemists forcibly recruited and all completed pills retained for Azure Waves Heaven’s use 78 79.
He had also spent three years cultivating Shen Zhe’an as a living key to Thunder Nether Grotto-Heaven. Favors to Shen’s family, thunder cultivation methods, and powerful pills bound the young cultivator to him while a thunder mark formed within Shen’s soul 78.
After Ye Chen sacrificed his remnant soul to refine the pill, Canglan ordered Qi Ming seized. Yu Liang negotiated Qi Ming’s release, but Canglan kept the pill and detained the Alchemists to inspect it. Nearly a hundred examined it for three days without finding a defect beyond a faint trace of Ye Chen’s soul. Jia Ru had anticipated this scrutiny and intended Canglan’s suspicions to distract him from the Ye Clan’s preparations 79 80.
Betrayal and Imprisonment
When Thunder Nether Grotto-Heaven descended over Lake Tai, Canglan entered to claim its origin. He fought the former Thunder Palace master’s remnant soul, eventually drawing on Great Jin’s national fortune to break apart its lightning giant and absorb the released thunder power 84.
At the decisive moment, Honglin took control of the origin. Canglan realized that his appointment, borrowed thunder, and apparent opportunity to ascend had all positioned him to draw out the origin and endure the remnant soul’s counterattack for Honglin 84.
Honglin then pulled Canglan from the grotto-heaven and held him captive in his palm. Despite his fury, Canglan joined the appeals for Honglin to accept a supreme honored title. Afterward, Honglin imprisoned him within Thunder Nether Grotto-Heaven; Canglan retreated into its depths without further resistance 85 86.
Appearance
- Features: Handsome, with brows and eyes resembling Sima Huanyu’s, but a gentler and less imposing bearing 65.
- Clothing: Wears a black brocade robe during his journey to Huainan 65.
- Eyes: After his lightning-assisted advancement, deep blue and purple mingle in his eyes, with faint sparks of lightning 65.
- Regalia: Wears a nine-streamered crown during his expedition into Thunder Nether Grotto-Heaven 84.
Personality
Canglan presents himself as courteous, warm, and generous. He honors useful allies publicly and speaks gently even when restricting others. Ye Zhanxin contrasts this polished manner with Huanyu’s open aggression, recognizing that Canglan’s concealed intentions make him dangerous 66 67.
His generosity is calculated. Offices create dependents, family patronage becomes leverage, and increased stipends disguise the confinement of potential rivals. He values loyalty over institutional dignity and treats talented people as resources to control or destroy 67 78 79.
Canglan is intensely concerned with recognition and status. He believes publicly displayed merit matters more than unseen accomplishments, resents Chengzhao’s reputation, and considers himself entitled to compensation for financing the realm. Yet when Honglin decisively overpowers him, his defiance gives way to flattery and submission 75 85 86.
Abilities & Skills
Imperial Grace of Rain and Dew
An imperial Dao technique founded on water and the intent of sovereign grace, capable of nourishing a region or overwhelming enemies 65 84.

- Suppresses disruptive monsters and reduces ghostly disturbances throughout Huainan 65.
- Produces offensive golden rain that dissolves the power of lightning constructs 84.
- Condenses into a large rune for direct attacks 84.
- Normally requires Golden Core cultivation; Canglan initially performs it with Honglin’s borrowed spring thunder 65.
- Buys time for recovery rather than immediately resolving every sinister anomaly or the population’s fear 66.
Thunder Cultivation
Canglan incorporates thunder into his water-based cultivation while pursuing an independent lightning Dao 65 84.
- Merges descending lightning with spring thunder inside his nascent Dao domain 65.
- Approaches a thunder-attribute heavenly position and begins absorbing the grotto-heaven’s origin 84.
- Remains vulnerable to Honglin’s superior control, which interrupts and redirects the absorption 84.
Divine Sense and National Fortune

- Guardian of Huainan seal — A deep-blue, dragon-patterned jade seal entrusted to Ye Zhanxin for regional administration 66.
