Background / History

Disgrace and Apprenticeship

Xiao Yan lost his Dou Qi and was treated as a good-for-nothing by his clan. His situation worsened when Nalan Yanran of the Misty Cloud Sect publicly demanded the cancellation of their engagement. He answered the humiliation with a Three-Year Agreement, declaring that his present weakness would not determine his future 4 5.

Hun Tiandi approached him through a Storage Ring, presenting himself as a wandering spirit. Initially suspicious of the black smoke surrounding this supposed benefactor, Xiao Yan nevertheless accepted him as his master. A single pill then restored his cultivation and allowed him to become a Dou Zhe 5.

Unknown to Xiao Yan, his teacher was a transmigrator who had killed Yao Lao and taken his place inside the ring. Hun Tiandi’s system rewarded him for nurturing Xiao Yan, the Child of Destiny. Xiao Yan instead believed his master’s concealed identity had been intended to temper his character and prevent arrogance 1 4.

Rise and the Xiao Clan’s Recovery

Hun Tiandi offered Xiao Yan a Heaven Tier High-Level cultivation technique or the initially Yellow Tier Flame Mantra. He recommended the latter because it could evolve by consuming Heavenly Flames, and Xiao Yan subsequently cultivated it 5 10.

By the Three-Year Agreement, Xiao Yan had become a peak Dou Zun, overwhelming the expectations of Nalan Yanran and those who had mocked him. Hun Tiandi later provided Tou She Ancient God’s complete inheritance, enabling his eventual Dou Di breakthrough 1 6.

That breakthrough revived the Xiao Clan’s Dou Di Bloodline. Xiao Ding entered the Dou Sheng realm, and Xiao Yan later reported that both his brothers were Dou Sheng experts while most clan members were Dou Zun 16 28.

Qian Renxue’s Arrival

Immediately after Xiao Yan’s Dou Di breakthrough, an unconscious Qian Renxue appeared at his cultivation site. Unable to determine her origin, he carried her through a spatial rift to Hun Tiandi 1 2.

When Hun Tiandi accepted her as his disciple, Xiao Yan welcomed her as his junior sister. He arranged accommodation, explained the Dou Qi Continent’s cultivation system, and used his soul power to show her memories of his own apprenticeship 3 4 5 6.

He continued helping her understand her progress, including the power gained through the Samsara Scripture and the purpose of the Conversion Spirit Arrays. Her arrival also prompted discussions with Hun Tiandi about other worlds and the cultivation realms beyond Dou Di 12 13 15 23.

Meeting Xiao Xuan

Hun Tiandi summoned Xiao Yan to the transformed Heavenly Tomb to meet his ancestor, Xiao Xuan. Xiao Yan immediately paid his respects and described the Xiao Clan’s recovery 28.

Xiao Xuan explained his failed attempt to restore the clan’s bloodline but concealed the Soul Clan’s involvement in its downfall. Xiao Yan expressed sympathy for his ancestor’s decision and grieved over his seemingly irrecoverable condition. He subsequently witnessed Xiao Xuan enter Hun Tiandi’s newly created samsara 28 29.

Defense of the Dou Qi Continent

When a Flame Demon commander emerged through the passage to the Great Thousand World, Xiao Yan recognized that the invader’s strength far exceeded his own. He protected Qian Renxue with Emperor Flame and sent her back to the Endless Soul Domain 30.

After Hun Tiandi killed the commander, Xiao Yan accompanied him to help redeploy the Ten Thousand Souls Ancient Array against further attacks. Hun Tiandi then entrusted the continent’s affairs to him and promised to delegate the Plane Master’s authority while he traveled to the Great Thousand World 31 33 34.

Appearance

Xiao Yan is welcoming and attentive toward Qian Renxue. He readily accepts her as his junior sister, notices her discouragement when she learns his cultivation level, and reassures her that Hun Tiandi’s guidance can help her reach the Emperor Realm as well. His concern also has a practical side: he questions the safety of the unfinished Samsara Scripture and removes her from danger during the Flame Demon invasion 3 4 10 30.

He shows deep gratitude and reverence toward Hun Tiandi, consistently crediting his master for his rapid advancement. This trust sometimes leads him to interpret Hun Tiandi’s actions more generously than their actual motives warrant, particularly the decision to hide inside his Storage Ring 1 4.

His early defiance of Nalan Yanran contrasts with his later modesty about reaching Dou Di. He also retains an enthusiastic, humorous streak, especially when explaining the Endless Soul Domain’s “corporate culture” and signature laugh 1 5 6.
