Background

Itachi stated that he entered war at four years old, possessed “the mind of a Kage” by six, and came to value the Will of Fire and the meaning of the village above the concerns of most of his clan. He regarded all Uchiha except Shisui as narrow-minded and believed their outlook would bring disaster to both Konoha and the clan. 65

He was closely aligned with Uchiha Shisui, whom the clan considered one of its greatest modern geniuses. Their friendship and mutual trust led many clan members to suspect Itachi after Shisui’s disappearance and the discovery of Shisui’s body without its eyes. 100

In Setsuna’s early simulations, Itachi is the direct perpetrator of the Uchiha Clan Downfall and kills Setsuna after the latter witnesses his family’s massacre. 4

Even when Setsuna attempts to avoid the massacre by joining Root or fleeing to Kirigakure, Itachi pursues and kills him, arguing that Setsuna’s survival would threaten Konoha. 26 33
