Discovering Character Pulls

Hu Liena initially sent Yan to investigate the performers in Spirit City because she could not leave her training. He arrived expecting Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo to have dealt with them, only to find crowds offering Shen Luo their Soul Power. Seeing a farmer wield Bennett’s flames stunned him: their heat and power exceeded his own fire skills 3.

Yan remained hesitant until Shen Luo invited him into Bennett’s Elemental Burst field. The field restored his fatigue, spent Soul Power, muscle pain, and small injuries while strengthening his own magma-based manifestation. Convinced that exchanging one level would be worthwhile, he eagerly joined the pulls 4.

His first ten-pull produced Xiangling and Barbara rather than the Bennett he wanted. Initial disappointment disappeared after he tested Xiangling’s enormous flames and Barbara’s unlimited Hydro normal attacks. Barbara’s healing burst restored the surrounding crowd, making Yan one of the earliest public demonstrators of Shen Luo’s character system 5 6.

Obtaining Arataki Itto

Yan committed to spending eight more Soul Power levels, but elders repeatedly pushed ahead of him. During the wait, he encouraged Chrysanthemum Douluo to pull in bulk, then received a beating after the elder lost the 50/50 to Qiqi. He recovered by striking Ghost Douluo while Qiqi’s healing talisman was active 7 13 15 18.

His eventual eighty-pull yielded Arataki Itto, Gorou, and additional Barbara copies. When an envious Chrysanthemum Douluo charged at him, Yan instinctively activated Itto’s Elemental Burst and knocked the elder at least fifteen meters away. Frightened by his own success, he immediately apologized and healed him with Barbara 19.

Learning that Itto required a scale from Golden Crocodile Douluo, the Second Worship, Yan resolved to challenge him directly. He hoped eventually to raise Itto to level 90, obtain his signature weapon, and become powerful enough to win Hu Liena’s affection 19 20.

Challenging the Second Worship

Hu Liena and Xie Yue tried to prevent the challenge, fearing both Yan’s death and the political consequences of offending the Worship Hall. Yan insisted that his strength had changed. After Hu Liena called Shen Luo a fraud, he pushed her aside, apologized, and left to prove himself, vindicate Shen Luo, and secure Itto’s ascension material 23.

The public duel drew Bibi Dong, Qian Daoliu, and the other Worships. Yan reflected Golden Crocodile’s opening scale attack with Itto’s charged attack, then used Xiangling’s Pyronado to scorch and repel his crocodile tail. Golden Crocodile’s Martial Soul Avatar and eighth Soul Skill shattered Yan’s Crystallize shield, broke his right arm, and sent him flying; Barbara healed the damage almost immediately 24 25.

Switching back to Itto, Yan broke off a claw from the Golden Crocodile True Body and drove it backward. Qian Daoliu stopped the fight before Golden Crocodile could unleash his ninth Soul Skill and declared Yan the winner. Yan received the promised scale and celebrated being the first of their group to obtain an ascension material 26.

Afterward, Yan and the elders explained the day’s events inside the Worship Hall. His four remaining Soul Rings demonstrated the price of the new abilities, prompting Bibi Dong and Qian Daoliu to arrange a visit to Shen Luo 27.

Spirit Hall’s Healer and Material Expeditions

Yan’s victory changed Hu Liena and Xie Yue’s attitudes toward character pulls. The three discussed using the new abilities in the Soul Master Tournament, though Yan worried that Spirit Hall’s leaders would offend Shen Luo by pressuring him 32.

Those fears proved justified when Shen Luo nearly killed Qian Daoliu. Bibi Dong sent Yan to treat the Great Enshrined, and Barbara’s healing saved him. Yan later treated Hu Liena after her fight with She Long and supported the public demonstrations of Dendro reactions 34 37 40 46.

For further growth, Yan joined Azure Luan Douluo, Xie Yue, and civilians in forcing their way into Blazing Fire Academy to obtain Pyro-character materials 52.

In the Star Dou Great Forest’s Core Circle, Yan volunteered to confront the Titan Giant Ape. Their first collision threw both combatants backward, but Barbara restored Yan’s injuries. He then used Ushi to divert the ape’s charge and attacked while it was distracted, eventually leaving it wounded and unable to continue resisting 65 66.

Appearance

• Red hair: His most consistently noted physical feature; Shen Luo initially addresses him as the “red-haired kid” 3 4 5.
• Young man: His youth contributes to his confidence that he can cultivate back the Soul Power spent on pulls 5.

Personality

Yan is excitable, competitive, and readily captivated by spectacular abilities. He moves from cautious observation to enthusiastic spending after personally experiencing Bennett’s benefits. Good pull results make him jump for joy, while seeing stronger characters immediately gives him new goals 4 5 7 19.

His courage grows alongside his character-based strength. He challenges a level-98 Super Douluo despite his companions’ objections and later volunteers to fight the Titan Giant Ape. By the forest battle, his confidence has become an outright belief that he is invincible 23 24 65.

That confidence coexists with longstanding fear of senior elders. After accidentally launching Chrysanthemum Douluo, he rushes to apologize and heal him. He also retreats quickly when Golden Crocodile threatens him during their post-duel discussion 19 27.

Yan can be entitled and coercive: he pushes weaker customers aside, invokes his five-star character to claim priority, and proposes taking Huo Wu’s hair regardless of her consent. Conversely, his loyalty to Shen Luo is strong enough that he openly rejects Hu Liena’s accusation that the supposed god is a fraud 5 7 23 37.

Abilities & Skills

Original Fire-Attribute Martial Soul

• Produces red magma around his body when summoned 4.
• Receives stronger, hotter magma and increased damage while inside Bennett’s supportive field 4.
• Yan acknowledges that Xiangling’s flames are hotter and possess stronger attribute suppression than the fire abilities familiar to him 5.

Character Switching

Yan can manifest obtained characters in Martial Soul-like forms and borrow their abilities and weapons 3 5.

• Only one character’s skills can be actively used at a time, but he can switch freely between characters 5.
• Persistent effects can remain after switching: Xiangling’s Pyronado continues while Barbara is active 5.

Arataki Itto

His principal offensive character, used to defeat Golden Crocodile Douluo and the Titan Giant Ape 26 44 66.

• Royal Descent: Behold, Itto the Evil: Provides an enchanted, Geo-glowing weapon capable of breaking a claw from Golden Crocodile’s Martial Soul Avatar and overpowering its subsequent attacks 26.
• Ushi: Redirects the Titan Giant Ape’s charge toward the summoned bull, allowing Yan to attack the distracted opponent 65 66.
• Development goals: Yan wants Itto at level 90 with his signature weapon and later resolves to obtain C1. These remain ambitions rather than documented upgrades 20 40.

Xiangling

Provides powerful Pyro attacks and sustained damage 5.

• Guoba: Breathes flames extending more than ten meters, forcing nearby observers to retreat 5.
• Pyronado: Creates a roughly twenty-meter-wide rotating fire wheel around Yan 5.
• Pyronado persists after switching characters and overpowers Golden Crocodile’s third Soul Skill, scorching his tail 5 25.

Barbara

Provides Hydro attacks and exceptionally rapid recovery 5 6.

• Normal attacks: Fires water columns without consuming Soul Power or tiring Yan; one knocks a low-level Soul Master away 5 6.
• Elemental Skill: Supports healing while attacking and later repairs Yan’s broken arm and other wounds during his duel 6 25.

Gorou and Crystallize

• Inuzaka All-Round Defense: Places a yellow banner and Geo field beneath Yan 25.
• Combining its Geo with Pyronado’s Pyro produces red Crystallize shards; touching one gives Yan a shield 25.
• The shield does not make him invulnerable: Golden Crocodile’s avatar-enhanced eighth Soul Skill breaks through it and seriously injures him 25 26.

• Hu Liena — Golden Generation companion and romantic interest. Yan hopes his new strength will impress her; she initially tries to stop his challenge, then becomes interested in obtaining characters herself. He later heals her after her duel with She Long 6 20 23 32 40.
• Xie Yue — Close friend and fellow Golden Generation member. Initially warns Yan against provoking the Worship Hall, but enthusiastically cheers his performance and proposes using characters in the Soul Master Tournament 23 26 32.
• Shen Luo — Source of Yan’s characters and the figure he reveres as “Lord God.” Yan defends his authenticity and worries that Spirit Hall’s leadership will antagonize him 23 32.
• Chrysanthemum Douluo / Yue Guan — Senior elder who encourages Yan’s first purchase, then repeatedly punishes him over pull-related frustrations. Yan fears him, accidentally injures him with Itto, and promptly heals him 3 13 19.
