Background / History
Childhood and Physical Condition
Laxus possessed enormous magic power from birth, but his body could not endure it, leaving him frail and sickly. A Lightning Dragon Slayer Crystal implanted by “Pops” suppressed that power and saved his life. He later explains that his physical condition—not a shortage of magic power or magical understanding—is the fundamental limit on his growth 112.
His old family home holds important memories for both him and Makarov. Even after moving elsewhere, Laxus regularly stops to look at it when returning from commissions 36.
Conflict with Hughes and Reconciliation with Makarov
Laxus first meets Hughes after returning from months of commissions undertaken to qualify for the S-Class Exam. Finding Hughes and Mira living in his old home, he rejects Makarov’s decision to rent it to them. Hughes agrees to leave the next morning, but Laxus’s insults and threatening lightning provoke a fight. Hughes defeats him and destroys his Sound Pod 36.
Determined to win a rematch, Laxus swallows his pride and asks Makarov for advice. Their cooperation repairs their strained relationship. During the subsequent duel, Laxus reveals his Dragon Slayer Magic and briefly seals Hughes’s Elementalization with Lightning Chains, but Hughes breaks free and wins again 44 45 47 48.
His training motivation subsequently changes: rather than proving that his strength is independent of being Makarov’s grandson, he becomes determined to surpass Hughes 63.
Alon Island Mission
Makarov pairs Laxus with Hughes to suppress the dark guild on Alon Island. Their journey immediately exposes one practical weakness: a ten-hour train ride leaves Laxus severely motion-sick, forcing an overnight rest in Hargeon 79 81.
On the island, Laxus’s Dragon Slayer lightning cracks defenses that resist Hughes’s flames. He also intercepts a branch attacking Hughes and destroys severed branches with Lightning Strike. Against the strengthened Threads of Sin, the pair perform their first successful Unison Raid 86 88 89.
Both survive the island’s destruction and return through Hargeon. A Magic Council investigation later establishes that they were not responsible for destroying Alon Island 94 95 96.
Thunder Valley and the “Thunder God” Reputation
Makarov and Laxus select Thunder Valley as a source of lightning to accelerate his growth. Because Dojigiri Ezel of Tartaros has been sighted there, Hughes accompanies him 103.
Hearing that a battle has devastated the valley, Laxus fears Hughes has been injured and rushes to find him. Hughes, disguised as Jose Porla, stages an attack and provokes him into fighting. Laxus eventually recognizes that his opponent’s physical resilience and fighting style do not fit Jose 109 110.
After absorbing the valley’s lightning, Laxus activates Dragon Force and unleashes Narukami. Hughes deliberately allows himself to be launched away in Jose’s appearance, leading witnesses to believe Laxus has defeated one of the Ten Wizard Saints. This staged victory earns Laxus public acclaim as the “Thunder God,” rather than documenting an actual victory over Jose 110 118.
S-Class Promotion and Continued Training
Makarov formally approves Laxus for the S-Class Exam after recognizing his strength, improved character, and exceptional workload: he has completed sixty percent of Fairy Tail’s job requests that year 120.
The planned examination changes when Makarov leaves to deal with Hughes’s trouble at the Magic Council. Laxus instead fights Gildarts in the eastern forest and earns his approval. Their battle disturbs more than half the forest, prompting Porlyusica to emerge and strike down both combatants with her broom 149.
Before leaving to travel the continents, Hughes reminds Laxus to strengthen his body for a future attempt to address his condition through the Thunder Dragon King Elexion. Laxus delivers Hughes’s farewell letter to Mira, offers the Strauss siblings help whenever they need it, and immediately leaves on another S-Class mission rather than allowing his rival to outwork him 182 183.
Appearance
- Build: A tall young man with a physique he has trained for ten years by the time of the guild’s swimming tournament 36 68.
- Hair: Blond 149.
- Distinguishing mark: A lightning-bolt mark over his right eye 36.
- Accessory: Initially wears a Sound Pod around his neck 36.
- Dragon Force changes: His body becomes noticeably bulkier, and white scales appear at the outer corners of his eyes 110.
Personality
Laxus is proud, competitive, and sensitive to being treated as merely Makarov’s grandson. His initial hostility toward Hughes is also rooted in attachment to his old home: he sees its occupation as an intrusion on cherished memories, not simply a dispute over property 36 63.
Defeat frustrates him, but it also drives sustained effort. He seeks advice from Makarov, practices calming his mind under Gildarts’s guidance, and refuses to treat S-Class promotion as his final goal. When Hughes’s progress leaves him discouraged, he resolves to train harder rather than remain absorbed in self-pity 45 63 117 120.
His abrasive manner coexists with genuine loyalty. He rushes into Thunder Valley fearing for Hughes, threatens the apparent attacker for harming him, and later promises support to Mira and her siblings. Following his reconciliation with Makarov, he becomes more comfortable joking and socializing with the guild 108 109 110 183.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic
Laxus generates powerful golden lightning that exceeds ordinary lightning magic in potency 86.
- Lightning consumption: Absorbs external electricity to replenish or increase his power, including electricity released into a lake and Thunder Valley’s concentrated lightning 73 103 112.
- Lightning movement: Turns himself into lightning to travel rapidly 109 113.
- Environmental manipulation: Uses his own Dragon Slayer lightning as a bridge to gather Thunder Valley’s natural lightning into a combined attack; doing so consumes substantial magic power 109 110.
- Motion sickness: Trains and boats trigger severe sickness, making long-distance travel difficult 81 105.
- Early secrecy: Initially presents his abilities as ordinary lightning elemental magic on jobs, following Makarov’s instructions. His duel with Hughes exposes their Dragon Slayer nature 50.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Lightning Dragon’s Halberd | Compresses lightning into a halberd for direct clashes or throwing 47 109. |
| Lightning Dragon’s Jaw | Strikes the ground with lightning-wreathed fists, spreading powerful bolts across the battlefield 47. |
| Lightning Dragon’s Roar | Releases a large lightning shock wave from his mouth through a golden magic circle 47 109. |
| Lightning Dragon’s Crushing Fist | Delivers a lightning-charged punch; used to repel an attacking branch and shatter a table thrown toward guild members 88 122. |
| Lightning Strike | Produces a vast, tree-shaped lightning attack that reduces the Threads of Sin’s severed branches to ash, at the cost of almost all his remaining magic power 89. |
| Raging Volt | Used against Hughes and Gildarts in the lake following the swimming race 74. |
Lightning Chains
A restraining technique developed through Makarov’s guidance and deployed by combining battlefield lightning with Lightning Dragon’s Roar 47 48.
- Seals Hughes’s ability to use Elementalization while binding him 48.
- Does not prevent escape through sufficient physical strength: Hughes tears the chains apart using Tekkai 48.
Dragon Slayer Secret Art: Narukami
Laxus gathers and compresses powerful lightning into his right hand before releasing it as a finishing attack 48.
- Before the formal duel with Hughes, no previous opponent had seen him use it 48.
- Its strike against the guild’s lake causes the water to boil and its level to visibly drop 74.
- Can be combined with Hughes’s flames in a Unison Raid or strengthened through Dragon Force 89 110.
Dragon Force
A heightened state first demonstrated after Laxus consumes Thunder Valley’s lightning 110.
- Greatly increases his magic power and changes his physique 110.
- Allows him to unleash an enhanced Narukami with widespread destructive force 110.
- Places severe strain on his body: his first use exhausts his magic power and leaves him unconscious 110.
Unison Raid
Laxus synchronizes Narukami with Hughes’s Firefly: Fire Daruma, combining lightning and fire into a joint attack 89.
- First achieved against the Threads of Sin on Alon Island 89.
- Cracks the transformed trunk after Hughes’s physical blows fail to interrupt its strengthening 89.
- Requires careful timing; their first success occurs when Laxus has only enough magic power for one more Secret Art 89.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Lightning Dragon Slayer Crystal — Implanted in his body to suppress his excessive innate magic power and keep him alive 112.
- Sound Pod — A musical magic item worn around his neck; destroyed by Hughes during their first confrontation 36.
- Communication Magic Crystal — Gives Hughes a crystal so they can coordinate their separate journeys to Thunder Valley 105.
- Old family home — A residence deeply tied to his memories of Makarov; its temporary rental to Hughes causes their first fight 36.
Relationships
- Makarov — Grandfather and guild master. Their early conflict is resolved when Laxus asks for help against Hughes. Makarov subsequently supports his training, Thunder Valley expedition, and S-Class qualification 36 45 63 103 120.
- Hughes — Close friend, mission partner, and principal rival. Their relationship grows from two decisive defeats into mutual trust, constant teasing, and effective battlefield cooperation. Surpassing Hughes becomes Laxus’s central training goal 48 63 89 108 183.
- Gildarts — Mentor and S-Class examiner. Advises him to calm his mind, encourages his ambition, and ultimately acknowledges his strength after their examination battle 63 120 149.
- Natsu — Fellow Dragon Slayer. After discovering Laxus’s magic, Natsu follows him around asking questions about dragons, annoying him enough to avoid the guild temporarily 50.
- Mira, Lisanna, and Elfman — Guildmates whom Hughes asks him to look after. Laxus personally offers them help after delivering Hughes’s farewell letter 182 183.
- Porlyusica — Interrupts his examination battle with Gildarts when their fighting damages the eastern forest, defeating both with her broom 149.
