Background / History
Early Life and Guild Leadership
In his youth, Makarov traveled throughout Earth-land and witnessed enough cruelty to become wary of exposing unusual abilities to outsiders. Bob, Goldmine, and Porlyusica were once his Fairy Tail teammates; Bob and Goldmine later became the masters of Blue Pegasus and Quatro Cerberus, respectively 50 54.
Makarov devoted his life to making Fairy Tail a family where members could grow up happily. He kept magic freely available in the guild library and personally instructed younger mages. Gildarts developed under his supervision, and Makarov personally administered his S-Class examination 7 23 35 120.
Welcoming Hughes and the Strauss Siblings
Makarov was initially drunk through the battle that accompanied Hughes’s arrival. When the guild hall collapsed, he seized Hughes with Giant Magic, but Lisanna explained that the existing members had caused most of the destruction. Makarov accepted her account and reprimanded his own mages 21 22.
He welcomed Mira, Lisanna, and Elfman, recognized Mira’s self-awakened magic, and confirmed her siblings’ promising aptitude. Although Hughes lacked a magic source, Makarov accepted him as well. He then took the unconscious Hughes to Porlyusica, assigned Macao to begin teaching Lisanna and Elfman, and promised to instruct Mira personally 22 23.
When the newcomers needed accommodation, Makarov offered them his suburban house. He later taught the Strauss siblings the principles of Take Over Magic and led meditation lessons for the guild’s younger members 28 49.
Guild Alliance Meeting and Clover Grand Canyon
At the Guild Alliance meeting, Makarov’s drunken boasting about Fairy Tail escalated into a confrontation with Jose Porla. He overwhelmed Jose’s Darkness Magic with golden beams and giant strikes, though his attacks also destroyed mountaintops and damaged the meeting venue 55 56.
Afterward, Makarov accompanied Hughes to investigate Satan’s former sealing site in Clover Grand Canyon. He studied the ancient array, confirmed its connection to divine power, and erased its remains and the surrounding corpses without damaging the canyon. His attempt to turn this into a lesson about restraint backfired when Hughes produced a recording of his earlier destruction 59 60.
Zeref’s Devil and Threads of Illusory Evil
While visiting the Magic Council, Makarov was urgently dispatched with the Custody Enforcement Unit to stop a devil created by Zeref. Its Wind Curse, aerial mobility, and support from the dark guild Threads of Illusory Evil forced him to divide his attention between fighting and protecting the enforcement unit. A sneak attack left him with four claw wounds, while the unit suffered heavy losses 78.
Enraged, Makarov annihilated the devil rather than sealing it as Council regulations required. He also defeated most of the assisting dark mages, but their master Gogirde escaped. Makarov subsequently entrusted Hughes and Laxus with the Council’s mission to eliminate the survivors on Alon Island 78 79.
As the investigation expanded toward Tartaros, Makarov researched its connection to the Book of Zeref and secured Council authorization for Hughes’s hunt for Dojigiri Ezel. He later agreed to handle the political fallout from Hughes and Laxus destroying Thunder Valley and damaging territory belonging to Fiore and Bosco 103 104 114.
Stopping Hughes at the Magic Council
Suspecting that Hughes intended to retaliate against the Magic Council, Makarov secretly watched its headquarters. He intercepted Hughes disguised as Jose and warned that magic could identify a killer despite the disguise 132.
Hughes refused to withdraw, and their confrontation devastated the headquarters. Makarov eventually proposed a final exchange: if Hughes lost, he would abandon his pursuit of Crawford Seam and the other councilors. Makarov’s all-out blow defeated Hughes instantly, but injured him more severely than intended 133 134 135.
Makarov immediately carried Hughes to Porlyusica for treatment. Hughes later retaliated financially by naming Makarov as the debtor for the outstanding 23-million-J medical bill 136 141.
Alvarez, Kailinfu, and Sabertooth
Kailinfu repeatedly sought Makarov’s help against Bloodman, who had destroyed her guild and imprisoned her parents’ souls. Makarov refused to kill him personally: as an Ishgar Wizard Saint, attacking an important Alvarez figure could give the empire a pretext for another invasion. He nevertheless spent three years using his Council connections to seek intervention 145 147.
He opposed Hughes rashly accepting Kailinfu’s request, later delivered her divine treasure ring to him, and warned him not to underestimate Bloodman. Makarov also insisted that Fairy Tail’s connection to Alvarez and the secret in its basement remain hidden from Gildarts and Laxus, fearing they might head west on their own 148 159 160.
After Bob traced a malicious rumor about Hughes to Sabertooth, Makarov authorized retaliation to discourage further attacks on Fairy Tail’s members. When Hughes returned after killing Jiemma and taking over Sabertooth, Makarov agreed to handle the death’s legal consequences but initially treated the takeover as betrayal. Hughes explained that Fairy Tail remained his home and that Sabertooth would secretly cultivate allies against threats from the western continent 160 174.
Rematch with Hughes
An ill-timed slap from Makarov knocked Hughes into Mira’s punch below the waist, provoking a battle on a deserted island. Hughes’s newly awakened flames forced Makarov to fight at full strength 180 181.
Makarov could not overcome Hughes’s enormous fireball with his ordinary arsenal, despite a mountain-sized punch. Hughes voluntarily dispersed it, and Makarov acknowledged his strength before striking him into another pit. Porlyusica arrived afterward and hit Makarov with her cane 181.
Appearance
- Normal form: A very short elderly man, shorter than Lisanna when they first meet 22.
- Hair and beard: A bald pate and gray-and-white beard 34 59.
- Giant form: A heavily muscled body that can tower above houses or rival the Magic Council headquarters in scale, often surrounded by golden light 21 56 133 134.
- Temporary injuries: Returns from the devil-suppression mission wrapped in bandages; the four claw wounds beneath them are already healing when he explains their origin 76 78.
Personality
Makarov treats Fairy Tail as a home rather than merely an organization. He welcomes unconventional recruits, accepts Hughes despite his lack of magic, and refuses to pry into his secrets once he sees that his unusual strength is genuine. His standing offer is simple: members should come to him when they are in danger 23 28 34.
He enjoys Fairy Tail’s disorder as long as it does not become ruinously expensive. He permits a no-magic welcome brawl, calls for parties, and celebrates returning members, yet repeatedly explodes over broken furniture, damaged buildings, and threats to his retirement savings. His own destructive fighting makes his lectures on restraint an easy target for Hughes 27 34 60 97.
His leniency has limits. He disciplines reckless members physically and, according to Laxus, works with townspeople to teach complacent mages a lesson. He also balances loyalty against wider consequences: he prevents Hughes from killing councilors and refuses a personal attack on Bloodman that might endanger Ishgar 117 132 147.
Abilities & Skills
Giant Magic
Makarov’s principal combat magic is a form of Lost Magic 57.
- Enlarges his entire body or individual limbs, including extending an arm to strike at a distance 22 28.
- Produces giant fists and mountain-sized blows capable of battering highly durable opponents 134 181.
- Allows him to clear heavy debris while investigating ancient ruins 59.
- Can be activated under sustained bombardment; Hughes’s flaming spears fail to interrupt his transformation 181.
Golden Magical Attacks
- Fires concentrated golden beams from his fingers or a triangular opening formed with his hands 56 133.
- Destroys Jose’s Dark Rondo, Soul Devouring, and Death Storm with beams or magically reinforced strikes 56.
- Releases volleys of rays, serpentine streams from his fingertips, and scattered magical projectiles to intercept attacks 134 181.
- Reinforces his body with magic rather than continuously blocking incoming blows 134.
Magic Power and Control
- Erases Satan’s defunct sealing array and heaps of corpses through raw magic power alone, preserving the surrounding canyon. The effort leaves him exhausted; he explicitly notes that the array is only an empty shell 60.
- Releases enough power to extinguish some of Hughes’s otherwise indefinitely burning awakened flames 181.
- Defeats Hughes’s Haki- and Tekkai-reinforced body with an all-out strike during their Council battle 133 135.
- Retains Super Magic beyond the techniques used in the island rematch; the passage explicitly states that he had not employed it 181.
Magical Perception and Research
- Detects Hughes’s immense spiritual power, absent magic source, and sudden physical improvement 22 34.
- Recognizes Mira’s demonic aura and identifies her magic as self-awakened 22.
- Tests magical aptitude and studies ancient formations, divine traces, and historical accounts of demons 23 59 60.
Other Magic
- Ice Magic: Learned specifically to guide Gray; freezes Feather Fish without damaging them 59.
- Golden restraints: Creates chains or nets that suspend and transport Hughes 23 136.
- Magically enhanced travel: Uses his immense power to transport the badly injured Hughes back to Magnolia’s eastern forest in a day 136.
Teaching and Administration
- Teaches meditation, resolve, and magical comprehension as daily foundations of training 49.
- Designs and supervises Laxus’s S-Class examination with Gildarts, requiring an S-Class beast challenge and Gildarts’s approval 120 121.
- Uses his Council connections to authorize dangerous missions and negotiate the consequences of destructive ones 104 114.
Limitations
- The Wind Curse devil’s speed and flight are a poor matchup for him, especially while he is protecting others 78.
- Large-scale power use causes visible exhaustion, and he anticipates needing recovery after facing Hughes’s awakened fireball 60 181.
- Cannot stop Hughes’s final island attack without resorting to Super Magic 181.
Equipment / Items
- Guild stamps: Carries a spare stamp and applies Fairy Tail emblems to new recruits 22 23.
- Magic-concealing pendant: Gives Hughes a pendant that disguises his lack of magic, making him appear to be a mage 141.
- Premium hot-spring VIP card: Receives the card from the person controlling Magnolia’s hot-spring street and later lends it to Hughes 115.
