Background / History

Service under Yoruichi

Soi Fon comes from a lower noble family that has served the Shihōin Clan for generations. She grew up at Yoruichi’s side, eventually joining her personal guard and becoming a trusted Stealth Force aide. Yoruichi personally teaches her Hakuda and Shunpo, and their closeness extends beyond an ordinary superior–subordinate relationship 60 87 237 243.

Her responsibilities include mission reports, deployment recommendations, paperwork, and operational command. She also assists with investigations: during Wang Xun’s questioning about Hasegawa Shinjirō, she escorts him to the Second Division and records his testimony on Yoruichi’s orders 25 48 69.

Recruiting and Assessing Wang Xun

Soi Fon initially questions why Yoruichi is interested in Wang Xun and worries that his concealed strength makes him dangerous. Nevertheless, she warns him frankly that the Punishment Force executes and assassinates rebellious Soul Reapers and has an exceptionally high casualty rate 27 31.

Under Yoruichi’s orders, she participates in advance surveillance intended to protect him from attack. After the Stealth Force captures the assassins targeting him and the noodle shops, she acknowledges his strength and escorts him to the Fourth Division for treatment 54 55.

She later administers his Punishment Force Reserve entrance examination, suppressing her Reiatsu and restricting herself to Hakuda. Wang Xun chooses the same restriction and begins learning from her attacks during the test. She accepts him into the reserves and subsequently takes him into her direct squad 60 61 62 69.

West Rukongai Investigation

Soi Fon leads Wang Xun and two veterans to investigate missing Soul Reapers in West Rukongai District 32. She and Wang Xun search together, discover a suspicious abandoned house, and encounter a Ninth Division group led by Kaname Tōsen 69 71 72.

During the confrontation with Amamiya Shin, she lands a Suzumebachi strike but is caught by his Zanpakuto’s Reiatsu-draining threads and added neurotoxin. With her reactions impaired, he immobilizes her using Bakudō #61: Rikujōkōrō. Wang Xun defeats him, while Urahara’s arrival later secures his detention by the Stealth Force 73 74 76.

Soi Fon recognizes that she acted rashly and intends to criticize her own conduct in the mission review. Wang Xun stays behind to support her on the return journey, but her worsening condition requires treatment beyond his ability. Unohana personally removes the toxin 74 77 79.

Shunkō Research

Driven by the encounter with Amamiya Shin and her desire to ease Yoruichi’s burdens, Soi Fon resumes training before her recommended rest period ends. Wang Xun’s observations help her establish a workable Shunkō prototype 81.

Her discovery that Yoruichi’s uniform suits the technique makes her fear that she is intruding upon her superior’s secrets. Wang Xun raises the matter with Yoruichi, who explains that developing the technique independently benefits Soi Fon’s growth and provides her with a suitable combat outfit 87 88 89.

Soi Fon continues refining Shunkō through sparring, choosing not to rely on Yoruichi to complete it for her. Wang Xun’s eventual mastery surprises and unsettles her, but they agree to continue training together after his transfer to the Fourth Division 108 111 112.

Succession and the Quincy War

Yoruichi’s declaration as a fugitive leaves Soi Fon shaken. She seeks answers from Wang Xun, then spars and drinks sake with him before spending the night with him 237.

Determined that the Second Division cannot remain without a captain, she accepts Wang Xun’s proposal to obtain Bankai through the Tenshintai. They steal the device from the Shihōin estate and use the underground cavern beneath Sōkyoku Hill for training. After four days, she achieves Bankai, passes the captain’s examination, and succeeds Yoruichi 242 243.

As captain, she leads approximately one hundred Stealth Force members into the Wandenreich on a reconnaissance mission. A Quincy trap exposes their position, forcing them into combat. She fights Cang Du and kills him with Suzumebachi’s second strike after Wang Xun briefly restrains him with Bakudō 246.

Reunion with Yoruichi

After learning that Wang Xun knew Yoruichi had been falsely accused, Soi Fon confronts him over his silence. She eagerly accepts his invitation to visit Urahara in the World of the Living 252.

At their reunion, she tearfully asks why Yoruichi left without her. Yoruichi explains that taking her along would have endangered her family. Soi Fon offers to relinquish the captaincy, but Yoruichi insists that she earned the position and entrusts the Second Division to her 253.

Her ambition is closely tied to her devotion to Yoruichi: she wants to become her sharpest right hand and stand beside her against Soul Society’s hidden threats. This also makes her sensitive to falling behind or losing Yoruichi’s attention. Wang Xun’s rapid progress initially provokes jealousy, but her desire to learn eventually outweighs her pride enough for her to request his help 65 66 81.

She is fiercely competitive without being incapable of self-criticism. She admits that her conduct against Amamiya Shin was rash and openly acknowledges defeat when Wang Xun surpasses her in sparring. Rather than abandon training, she resolves to improve until she can beat him 74 131.

Her reserved exterior weakens around people she trusts. Yoruichi’s teasing readily flusters her, while Wang Xun increasingly becomes someone with whom she shares doubts, frustration, and vulnerability 69 81 87 111.
