Ch. 41The Origins of Pokémon Breeders

The chapter recounts how Sedai’s research into his three evolving Eevee and other objects that affected Pokémon led him to become the first Pokémon Breeder. After the Pokémon League rose to power, Sedai shared his findings and helped establish the Breeder profession and its organization.

  • As a child, Sedai discovered a mysterious stone that transformed his Eevee into Vaporeon.
  • Sedai traveled for two years, found two more stones, and watched his other Eevee evolve into Jolteon and Flareon.
  • Sedai spent seven years studying Pokémon in the wild and discovered how Silver Powder, a concentrated drop of water, and Berries affected them.
  • After the Warring States period ended, Sedai presented his research to the Pokémon League and received widespread attention.
  • Sedai and like-minded researchers founded an organization that studied Pokémon’s growth, evolution, and reproduction, and named themselves Pokémon Breeders.

Ch. 42Knowledge? Knowledge!

After reading about Sedai, Terrance reflected on how knowledge had shaped his life and decided to pursue a path of strengthening Pokémon through external tools and resources. He left the Breeding House with a broad research direction in mind, though he still lacked a rigorous plan.

  • Terrance read Sedai’s biography and was struck by the breeder’s decades of perseverance and his advice to use knowledge to achieve one’s goals.
  • Terrance connected Sedai’s words to his own progress and realized his breeder training was not yet sufficient before his upcoming departure for Coronet Academy.
  • Terrance left the Breeding House without disturbing Brock, who remained absorbed in his reading.
  • On the way back to the hotel, Terrance concluded that knowledge could help trainers grow beyond relying on Pokémon strength, experience, or luck.
  • Terrance considered studying external aids such as resources, move discs, supplements, and training devices, drawing inspiration from breeders’ research and ideas from his other world.
  • Terrance recalled the term Mega Evolution while thinking about Master Katsumune’s research, but he recognized that his own research direction still needed to become more rigorous.

Ch. 43Rusturf Tunnel

Terrance accompanied Master Katsumune to Verdanturf Town to investigate the Whismur disrupting construction on Rusturf Tunnel, and learned the Pokémon’s motive remained unknown. While Master Katsumune met with officials, Terrance watched local trainers battle as Tetsuya formed a group to investigate the incident themselves.

  • Terrance and Master Katsumune traveled to Verdanturf Town after Whismur repeatedly damaged the Rusturf Tunnel construction site and injured workers.
  • Terrance reasoned that the Whismur’s Soundproof talent meant construction noise might not explain their actions, and Master Katsumune agreed that their motive needed investigation.
  • After arriving, Master Katsumune met with police and staff while Terrance went to watch trainers battle nearby.
  • Tetsuya defeated an Azumarill with his Grovyle, earning his fourth consecutive victory.
  • Tetsuya proposed taking five trainers into the mountains to investigate the Whismur, and three trainers joined him, bringing the group to four.

Ch. 44The Noise Pokémon

Terrance was mistakenly recruited by four young Trainers planning to investigate the Whismur rampage, though he intended to rest instead. The next morning, Master Katsumune revealed that Exploud was leading the aggressive Pokémon and sent Terrance to find the missing Trainers with Pidgeot.

  • Tetsuya invited Terrance to join the investigation, and Sōsa, Koki, and Agaku assumed Terrance was a rookie Trainer when he tried to decline.
  • The five Trainers planned to enter the mountains at midnight to investigate the Whismur rampage near Rusturf Tunnel.
  • Terrance left the group intending not to meet them again and made a temporary shelter for the night.
  • A disturbance woke Terrance the next morning, and he found Officer Jenny and Master Katsumune investigating the incident.
  • Master Katsumune explained that Exploud was the Whismur's leader and that Whismur and Loudred had become aggressive before retreating into the mountains.
  • Terrance warned that the four Trainers might already be in the mountains, so Master Katsumune gave him Pidgeot's Poké Ball and asked him to find them while he and Officer Jenny investigated Exploud.

Ch. 45Totem

Terrance searched the mountains for Tetsuya’s group and found an enormous, aggressive Exploud among a Whismur colony. Tetsuya and the others followed the cries into a narrow mountain path, where Terrance’s Beautifly arrived as they faced several Whismur.

  • Terrance and Pidgeot searched the mountain range and spotted Whismur and Loudred, but continued looking for Tetsuya’s group.
  • Exploud roared among the colony, and Terrance retreated with Pidgeot after recognizing the Pokémon’s immense strength.
  • Tetsuya, Sōsa, Koki, and Agaku felt vibrations near a cave and hurried onward to investigate.
  • The group encountered several Whismur on a narrow path and sent out Grovyle, Persian, Roselia, and Nincada to battle.
  • A shadow passed over the trainers, and a youthful voice ordered Beautifly to use Sleep Powder.

Ch. 46The Reason

Terrance warned Tetsuya and the other Trainers about the dangerous Whismur group, then helped guide them to safety while Master Katsumune calmed Exploud. Terrance later learned that abandoned Diglett had disrupted the Whismur’s territory and that the conflict had grown from a failure to understand their warning; the humans and Pokémon reached a truce, leaving the Diglett’s impact on the local ecosystem to be addressed.

  • Terrance arrived on Pidgeot and warned Tetsuya, Sōsa, Koki, and Agaku to leave the area, then led them to a hidden cave.
  • After hearing roars, Terrance flew back and found Master Katsumune speaking with Exploud while Miss Jenny and police officers stood nearby.
  • Master Katsumune calmed Exploud, and the Whismur and Loudred withdrew; Terrance told him where the four Trainers were hiding.
  • Terrance learned that a Lavaridge Town farm owner had abandoned nearly a hundred Diglett, which migrated toward Verdanturf and disturbed the Whismur’s home.
  • Master Katsumune traced the conflict to the Diglett migration and negotiated with Exploud, while the humans prepared to address the Diglett’s ecological impact.

Ch. 47Challenge!!

Terrance challenged Exploud to test his ideas about sound-based battling, but Exploud defeated Beautifly with its devastating Boomburst. Terrance left fascinated by Exploud’s techniques and prepared to continue toward resolving the Diglett problem before traveling to Sinnoh.

  • Terrance and Master Katsumune entered Exploud’s cave, and Exploud agreed to battle after Master Katsumune offered to handle the Diglett problem.
  • Terrance sent out Beautifly for a one-on-one battle against Exploud on open ground.
  • Beautifly attacked with Silver Wind and Air Cutter, then trapped Exploud in an electrically charged Electroweb.
  • Exploud unleashed Boomburst, shattered the Electroweb, and blasted Beautifly from the sky, winning the battle.
  • Terrance recalled the injured Beautifly, thanked Exploud, and asked Swablu to observe Exploud’s sound-based techniques.

Ch. 48Farewell, Hoenn (End of volume one)

Terrance planned a long-term sound-training technique for Swablu and secured a place at Coronet Academy. He then left Hoenn for Sinnoh, while Jun set out to pursue ecological conservation research in Kalos.

  • Terrance theorized that Swablu could use Mirror Move and resonant frequencies to counter opponents’ projectile moves, and committed to developing the technique over many years.
  • Master Katsumune contacted Coronet Academy, and Terrance obtained the opportunity to enroll there.
  • Terrance boarded a ship from Slateport City to Sinnoh, where Master Katsumune planned to part ways with him and help Jun speak with her family.
  • Terrance read Jun’s message explaining that she wanted to study damaged ecosystems and pursue conservation research in Kalos.
  • Terrance watched Hoenn recede as he sailed toward Sinnoh and thought of Mt. Coronet.

Ch. 49Snowpoint City

Terrance arrived in snowbound Snowpoint City wearing clothes unsuited to the cold and met Candice, a girl who hoped to become a Gym trainer. She persuaded him to battle at the local Trainer School by offering to tell him a shortcut to Coronet Academy, and they headed there together.

  • Terrance shivered outside the Pokémon Center and realized his clothes were not warm enough for Snowpoint City’s climate.
  • Candice approached Terrance, admired his scarf, and challenged him to a battle.
  • Terrance initially refused, but stopped when Candice said she was from Snowpoint Gym and offered information about a shortcut to Coronet Academy.
  • Terrance agreed to battle Candice and followed her to the Pokémon Trainer School’s battlefield.

Ch. 50A spectacular battle

Terrance battled Candice at the Pokémon Trainer School, where his Beautifly used the wind and precise aerial control to counter Snover. The fight ended with Beautifly pulling Snover down with String Shot, leaving Candice stunned.

  • Candice and Terrance agreed to a one-on-one battle, and Candice sent out Snover while Terrance chose Beautifly.
  • Terrance ordered Beautifly to use Gust, but Snover stood firm and answered with Icy Wind, slowing Beautifly in the cold.
  • Terrance told Beautifly to follow the air currents, and it used the wind to glide through Icy Wind and dodge Snover's Ice Shard.
  • Beautifly launched Electroweb at Snover, and Candice ordered Razor Leaf to cut through the net.
  • As Snover finished Razor Leaf, Beautifly caught its ankles with String Shot and yanked it to the ground.
