Four Eyes Arrives
Because Lin Yu had the system, Uncle Nine couldn't see through his cultivation, so he had no choice but to ask.
"It isn't that high. I barely managed to break through the Dao Child Realm," Lin Yu said modestly.
"The Dao Child Realm! Heaven has blessed Maoshan!"
Uncle Nine was both thrilled and distressed. To have broken through to the Dao Child Realm at eight, Lin Yu was probably at least at the middle stage. Another unparalleled heaven's chosen had appeared in Maoshan, but why did he have to appear in this Dharma-ending age? There was no hope of ascension.
Lin Yu's eyes flickered when he heard that. Uncle Nine had clearly misunderstood him. By breaking through the Dao Child Realm, he meant breaking through it to reach the Daoist Realm, while Uncle Nine thought he had broken through to the Dao Child Realm.
But Lin Yu had no intention of correcting Uncle Nine. A misunderstanding was a misunderstanding; it made him seem less monstrous.
"Master, I'll go read, then." Seeing that Uncle Nine would probably remain excited for a while, Lin Yu decided to go read and cultivate. He wanted to explore more uses for his Heaven-Defying Comprehension.
"Mm, go on."
With permission granted, Lin Yu scampered off to read in Uncle Nine's study.
Meanwhile, Wen Cai and Qiu Sheng couldn't give anyone peace of mind even while kneeling.
"Don't you think Master's playing favorites? How come Junior Brother doesn't have to kneel?" Wen Cai complained.
"Junior Brother's still little. Maybe Master couldn't bear to make him kneel," Qiu Sheng said slowly, rubbing his thighs, which ached from kneeling.
"I think it's because Junior Brother's talented. Master's playing favorites."
Just as they were complaining,
"Are you tired of kneeling?" Uncle Nine's voice suddenly came from behind them.
"Yes, Master~" The two immediately pulled long faces and answered resentfully.
"Then I'll help you relax."
"Really? Thank you, Master!" The two were overjoyed and started to get up.
Master does care about us after all. We shouldn't have said he was playing favorites. But their joy didn't last two seconds.
"Hey, I never said you could get up." Uncle Nine quickly stopped them.
"Then how are we supposed to relax, Master?" The two plunged back into the depths of despair.
"Here, I brought you two kneeling cushions, so you can kneel more comfortably. Keep it up." With that, Uncle Nine walked away with his hands behind his back.
"Ah, let's kneel. At least this makes it more comfortable." Qiu Sheng gave up, took a cushion, and knelt before the patriarch's portrait.
"Godfather, I haven't knelt before you much before. I'll make it all up today."
Night.
"Yin folk coming through, yang folk make way~"
Outside Ren Family Town, a man in yellow robes and glasses slowly approached, driving a group of corpses before him.
Knock, knock, knock...
"Is anyone home?"
"Wen Cai~, go get the door," Uncle Nine called from his room.
"Yes~ Master~" Having knelt all day, Wen Cai got up weakly and staggered to the door.
Knock, knock, knock...
The knocking continued.
"Coming, coming," Wen Cai called, sounding like an eighty-year-old grandfather.
"Martial Uncle, you're here. Please come in." When Wen Cai opened the door and saw it was Martial Uncle Four Eyes, he hurriedly moved aside to let him through.
"Wen Cai, it hasn't been that long since I last saw you. How did you get so haggard? Has your master gone to bed?" Four Eyes asked in confusion when he saw how exhausted Wen Cai looked.
"It's nothing, nothing. I'm just too tired. Come in first, Martial Uncle. Master should be out soon." Wen Cai certainly didn't want to tell Four Eyes about something so embarrassing, so he gave him a casual answer.
"Good, good. Martial Uncle loves you best." Four Eyes happily rubbed and squeezed Wen Cai's old face.
"Junior Brother, it's been a long time since you last came by." At that moment, Uncle Nine came out of his room, buttoning his clothes.
"Senior Brother, I was driving corpses past here, so I stopped by to rest my feet." Four Eyes saluted Uncle Nine.
"Mm. Wen Cai, go help your martial uncle put his clients in the guest room."
"Yes, Master."
At that moment, Lin Yu also came out of his room. He had spent the past few days studying that Maoshan cultivation technique and had already gotten a little inkling.
He felt that if he read more books and learned a little more, he should be able to create something based on what he had in mind.
Mm, Heaven-Defying Comprehension really is awesome.
"Master, who's here?" Lin Yu asked in confusion as he looked at the huge crowd by the entrance from a distance.
"Xiao Yu, come here and greet your martial uncle," Uncle Nine said with a smile when he saw Lin Yu.
Huh? Martial Uncle!
Lin Yu hurried over and sure enough, he saw a four-eyed fellow with a group of corpses following behind him.
Is the plot about to begin? It's finally coming! It's been a month. Do you know how I've spent this past month?
"This disciple, Lin Yu, greets Martial Uncle." Although he suspected the plot was about to begin, Lin Yu didn't forget to greet his martial uncle.
Then he held out his little hand and looked expectantly at Four Eyes.
He knew that Four Eyes had a whole chest of little goldfish in the show. How could he pass up the chance to ask for a bigger first-meeting gift?
His master was famously stingy. Hopefully, Martial Uncle Four Eyes wouldn't be.
"Ahem, Junior Brother, this is my newly accepted disciple." Uncle Nine was quick on the uptake. Seeing Lin Yu's gesture, he knew what he wanted, so he coughed to remind Four Eyes.
Four Eyes froze for a moment.
Four Eyes: Wait, am I supposed to give him a first-meeting gift?
Then he casually reached into his robes, as though rummaging for something.
Seeing this, Uncle Nine instinctively narrowed his eyes. They had been martial brothers for years; he could tell what kind of fart Four Eyes was going to let out just by seeing him stick out his backside. How could he not understand? Four Eyes was going to grab something at random to fob Lin Yu off.
"Ahem, Xiao Yu, how could your Martial Uncle Four Eyes not have prepared a first-meeting gift? He must not have it ready at such short notice. Let him get it ready." Uncle Nine patted down Lin Yu's outstretched arm.
"Oh, thank you, Martial Uncle." Lin Yu tactfully thanked him.
Four Eyes's eyes widened. They were ganging up to fleece him!
He immediately shot Uncle Nine an irritated glare.
Having traveled all night, Four Eyes wasn't in the mood to dwell on it. The two martial brothers chatted briefly, then returned to their rooms and went to sleep.
"Xiao Yu, go see whether Wen Cai has taken good care of those clients in the guest room." Uncle Nine still wasn't at ease before going to bed, so he told Lin Yu to check.
"All right, I'll go take a look." Lin Yu knew that Qiu Sheng should be dressing up as a ghost to scare Wen Cai next.
"Huh? Why isn't anyone here?"
But when Lin Yu reached the "guest" room, he didn't see a single living person, only his martial uncle's clients and a pile of unclaimed corpses in coffins.
"Where's Senior Brother Wen Cai?" Lin Yu looked all around but didn't see him. By rights, shouldn't Wen Cai have been offering incense now, as in the original story?
Lin Yu found it strange that the incense hadn't been offered and Wen Cai was nowhere to be seen.
"Forget it, I'll offer some." Lin Yu hadn't intended to bother, but his master had sent him to check, and no incense had been offered, so he decided to offer some.
"Enjoy your food and drink, big brothers." Following Wen Cai's example, Lin Yu offered each client a stick of incense.
"Huh?"
But after offering incense at one coffin, just as he was about to move on to the next, the stick he had just put in suddenly sank inside.
Lin Yu: Oh, so Wen Cai's gone, and now you've come to scare me instead.
Lin Yu thought Qiu Sheng had been planning to scare Wen Cai, and he had walked into the line of fire instead.
Lin Yu put in another stick, but this time it flew straight out.
"Don't refuse a toast only to drink a forfeit." Lin Yu didn't know who he was saying it to, but he had given his warning.
Then he put in another stick of incense, but this time it was even worse: the coffin lid flew off.
To avoid being hit, Lin Yu hurriedly jumped aside.
A "zombie" sprang out of the coffin.
