Background / History

Qiu Sheng is already Uncle Nine’s disciple when Lin Yu joins the sect. During the apprenticeship ceremony, he carries the incense burner while Wen Cai brings the incense, helping Lin Yu pay respects to the patriarch 1.

He also helps at his aunt’s shop and travels to the mortuary on an old bicycle. After his inability to recognize a ghost places the disciples in danger, Uncle Nine orders him to live at the mortuary and undergo supervised training, promising to explain the arrangement to his aunt 2 5 11.

Appearance

• Swordlike brows and starry eyes: His distinguishing facial features at his first appearance 1.
• Convincing zombie disguise: Uses makeup and false teeth to impersonate a reanimated corpse during a prank on Lin Yu 13.

Personality

Qiu Sheng is cheeky, restless, and habitually more interested in amusement than cultivation. Although Lin Yu considers him somewhat talented, he cannot settle down to train consistently. Even seeing Lin Yu master talismans only inspires a brief effort before he resumes fooling around with Wen Cai 3 5.

He is quicker-witted than Wen Cai in several situations. He accepts Lin Yu’s suggestion to test a suspicious woman with talisman water, advises observing other customers when confronted with unfamiliar coffee service, and immediately understands Uncle Nine’s indirect instruction to stop daydreaming 9 16 33.

His attraction to beautiful women repeatedly overrides his judgment. He competes with Wen Cai for Ren Tingting’s attention and later willingly discards a protective talisman because Dong Xiaoyu asks him to. At that point, he has not yet been magically bewitched 15 21 30.

Despite his evasiveness, he can acknowledge fault. He persuades Wen Cai that apologizing to their eight-year-old junior brother is nothing to be ashamed of, and later kneels to apologize after attacking Uncle Nine under Dong Xiaoyu’s spell 13 31.

Daoist Cultivation

• Has reached approximately the middle to late stage of the Daoist Novice realm, placing him ahead of Wen Cai’s newly attained novice cultivation 3.
• His practical knowledge remains unreliable: he cannot remember how to use the eye-opening method Uncle Nine taught him 9.

Talisman Use and Ritual Assistance

• Ghost testing: Soaks Lin Yu’s evil-warding talisman in drinking water and gives it to a disguised ghost. Her screams and rising smoke expose her identity 9.
• Coffin sealing: Helps Wen Cai apply Uncle Nine’s enchanted ink line to Ren Weiyong’s coffin 22.
• Prank magic: Works with Wen Cai to use A Wei’s hair and a talisman to make him slap himself 23 24.

• Uncle Nine / Lin Jiu — Master. Repeatedly disciplines Qiu Sheng for negligence but also personally rescues him from Dong Xiaoyu and accepts his apology afterward 11 29 30 31.
• Wen Cai — Fellow disciple, frequent accomplice, and romantic rival. They share pranks and punishments while insisting on “fair competition” over Ren Tingting 5 11 21 23.
• Lin Yu — Junior brother. Qiu Sheng teases him and seeks his help avoiding punishment, but increasingly depends on his supernatural abilities and protection 5 9 11 28.
• His aunt — Runs a cosmetics shop where he helps. He regularly returns to her home, including when Uncle Nine has forbidden him from leaving the mortuary 8 16 29.
• Dong Xiaoyu — Ghost who pursues and seduces him. His attachment survives the revelation of her true appearance, leading him to plead for her release and express disappointment at their separation 30 31 32.
• Ren Tingting — Object of his pursuit. His staring and inappropriate remarks disgust her rather than win her affection 15 19.
• Four Eyes — Martial uncle. Qiu Sheng’s zombie prank disrupts his walking corpses; Four Eyes later laughs at the account of Qiu Sheng’s involvement with Dong Xiaoyu 13 32.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Disguised Ghost and Weasel Spirit

Qiu Sheng takes Wen Cai and Lin Yu to look at the House of Courtesans, insisting that watching from across the street is harmless. When the women invite them inside, he instead grabs his fellow disciples and flees 8 9.

They encounter a ghost disguised as an injured woman. Initially captivated, Qiu Sheng agrees to Lin Yu’s talisman-water test and exposes her. When she and a vengeful weasel spirit trap the group, Lin Yu immobilizes both with the Five Spirits Demon-Slaying Formation. Qiu Sheng and Wen Cai attack the helpless creatures but cannot finish them, leaving Lin Yu to destroy them 9 10.

Back at the mortuary, Uncle Nine learns what happened and orders the two older disciples to kneel before the founding master until dark. Qiu Sheng is also required to stay at the mortuary for supervised training 11.

The Zombie Prank

Qiu Sheng disguises himself as a zombie to frighten Lin Yu, who recognizes him and retaliates with a 36V Thunder Talisman and a beating. The resulting commotion leads Wen Cai to overturn the corpse-controlling lamp, freeing Four Eyes’ walking corpses 13.

Qiu Sheng later returns with Wen Cai to apologize, only to encounter an escaping corpse. Their cries bring Uncle Nine, who initially mistakes the disguised disciples for zombies as well 13.

The Ren Family Affair

Qiu Sheng competes with Wen Cai for Ren Tingting’s attention during the Ren family’s grave-relocation arrangements. He helps prepare Ren Weiyong’s coffin, but also joins Wen Cai in an attempted ink-line prank on Lin Yu. Their subsequent roughhousing ends with Wen Cai accidentally striking Uncle Nine, prompting Qiu Sheng to escape on his bicycle 15 19 21 22.

At the Ren residence, he and Wen Cai retaliate against A Wei with talisman magic after A Wei accuses Lin Yu of stealing. Uncle Nine reprimands all three disciples and sends the older two to practice fist techniques 23 24.

Dong Xiaoyu’s Pursuit

Dong Xiaoyu targets Qiu Sheng after the grave visit. Her first attempt to ride home on his bicycle fails when a crooked tree knocks her off near an Earth God temple 21 23.

On a later journey, she traps him on a looping road and stages an assault by controlling a night watchman. Qiu Sheng “rescues” her and follows her home. Lin Yu’s Protection Talisman stops her attempt to drain his Yang Qi, but he throws it away to please her 29 30.

When Uncle Nine intervenes, Dong Xiaoyu bewitches Qiu Sheng into seeing his master as A Wei. He attacks Uncle Nine until the spell is broken. Lin Yu then temporarily opens his Yin-Yang Eyes, revealing Dong Xiaoyu’s true appearance 31.

Qiu Sheng nevertheless pleads for her. After capturing her, Uncle Nine explains that a human–ghost relationship would harm him and arranges to send her for reincarnation when the underworld gates open on the fifteenth day of the seventh month 31 32.
