Background / History

Childhood in the Su Family

Su Yunyan grew up with little affection from her father and legal mother, while her clan looked down on her concubine-born status. Her elder brother, Su Jingyun, was her closest dependable relative 45 50.

At five, she entered the palace as a study companion in place of the vice minister’s legitimate daughter, who had fallen ill. There she befriended the eight-year-old Zongzheng Heng. Both suffered neglect and contempt because of their mothers’ low standing, and they privately comforted one another. Their companionship lasted a year, ending when the late emperor abolished the study-companion arrangement 8.

Reunion at Brahma Sound Temple

Twelve years after their separation, Zongzheng Heng encountered seventeen-year-old Su Yunyan praying at Brahma Sound Temple. She declared that she loved Prince Xuan—Zongzheng Heng—and would rather spend her life before the Buddha than marry another man 8.

He left her an unsigned note asking her to wait. To stop her family’s marriage arrangements, he secretly prompted the Imperial Astronomical Bureau to recommend a two-year ban on celebrations in the capital. After becoming emperor, he further postponed marriage arrangements until his consort selection 8.

Despite his attachment, he did not seek her out during his struggle for the throne. He later acknowledged to himself that, beyond preventing her marriage, he had done little for her 22.

Transmigration and Palace Entry

By the time she met Zongzheng Heng at Taiye Pool before the consort selection, the woman occupying Su Yunyan’s body had spent three years presenting herself as devoted to him. Beneath her quiet manner, she intended to use her knowledge of the novel to secure its promised ending for herself 44.

Her birth status would ordinarily have excluded her from the emperor’s first consort selection. Zongzheng Heng nevertheless intended to bring her into the palace and authorized arrangements to prevent her legitimate sister’s selection from obstructing that plan 1 38.

During her first two years in the harem, Su Yunyan maintained a persona of innocence and noncompetition. She lacked the powerful family connections available to other consorts and could not openly pursue imperial favor. Despite her caution, a scheme damaged her health and made it difficult for her to bear children 47.

Promotion to Consort Shu

After consolidating his authority, Zongzheng Heng promoted her to Consort Shu as compensation for the harm she had suffered. The empress dowager knew the reason and did not oppose the appointment. At that point, only Su Yunyan and Consort De occupied the four consort positions 47.

Zongzheng Heng began repeatedly summoning her to the Hall of Supreme Ultimate and openly declared that she had his protection. Su Yunyan understood this attention as an expression of guilt for having brought her into the palace without protecting her during his struggle for power 47.

Appearance

  • Features and bearing: Gentle features and a serene, unassuming manner, compared by Zongzheng Heng to an orchid blooming in a secluded valley 44.
  • Ornaments: Wears a pure-gold dangling hairpin tipped with pearls 47.
  • Clothing: Wears a blue-green dress when arriving at Su Jingyun’s residence during the southern tour 50.
  • The emperor’s assessment: Zongzheng Heng describes her as beautiful, cool, and unworldly, recommending plain azure gauze as suitable common attire 49.

Personality

Su Yunyan’s outward gentleness is a deliberate performance rather than a complete reflection of her temperament. She conceals strong ambition beneath an image of innocence, restraint, and indifference to competition. Maintaining that image for years leaves her frustrated when she cannot easily change her behavior without arousing suspicion 44 47.

She is pragmatic about security. Although she values the emperor’s trust, she explicitly rejects relying on a man’s heart and seeks a political supporter of her own. Bringing Su Jingyun back to the capital is therefore both a family reunion and a means of strengthening her position 47 48.

Her affection for her brother is genuine. She initially dismisses concerns about the low birth of the woman he loves, reflecting her modern background. Learning that the woman already has a child gives her pause because of likely family opposition, but she ultimately agrees to help if Lady Liu can cure the emperor’s headaches 50.

Su Yunyan can also answer hostility without abandoning formal decorum. When Zhu Rongyu insinuates that her frequent attendance is harming the emperor’s health, she counters by inviting Zhu to advise him personally—while pointedly noting that he has no time to receive her 49.

Abilities & Skills

Knowledge of the Original Novel

Su Yunyan knows the broad course of the story and treats its ending as something she can obtain for herself 44 47.

  • Believes that becoming empress and receiving proper care will allow her to conceive despite her damaged health 47.
  • Remembers an extra chapter in which Zongzheng Heng brings an unnamed woman from Jiangnan back to the capital 47.
  • Does not know whether the current southern tour is the journey described in that chapter or how that woman earned exceptional treatment from the emperor 47.

Court Etiquette and Persona Management

Su Yunyan adapts her conduct to Zongzheng Heng’s preference for quiet, sensible women who observe rules 44 47.

  • Uses formal greetings, restrained speech, and unobtrusive companionship, including grinding ink beside him 47.
  • Preserves an appearance of noncompetition even when another consort disregards her higher rank 49.
  • Abandons attempts to behave less conventionally after Zongzheng Heng repeatedly responds with displeasure 47.
  • Plans to use her experiences of mistreatment as a plausible reason for becoming less outwardly frail 47.

Political Planning

Su Yunyan recognizes that imperial favor alone cannot give her lasting security 47 48.

  • Requests a visit to Wu Commandery so Su Jingyun can appear before the emperor and potentially secure a transfer to the capital 47.
  • Writes to her brother proposing mutual support between her position in the palace and his prospective position at court 48.
  • Supports summoning Lady Liu to treat the emperor, reasoning that a successful cure would also benefit her brother’s career 50.

Relationships

  • Zongzheng Heng — Childhood companion and later her emperor and consort partner. He treasures the comfort she gave him in youth, but Qiao Shuyi’s influence complicates his feelings before Su Yunyan enters the palace. He later promotes and protects her partly out of guilt for her suffering 8 38 47.
  • Su Jingyun — Elder brother by the same mother and her most trusted family supporter. She seeks his return to the capital so they can support one another politically and agrees to assist his proposed marriage to Lady Liu 45 48 50.
  • Qiao Shuyi / Liu Susu / Lady Liu — The woman whose influence has unsettled Zongzheng Heng’s attachment to Su Yunyan. In Wu Commandery, Su Yunyan supports Lady Liu’s medical appointment and possible marriage to her brother without identifying her as Qiao Shuyi in the supplied chapters 38 45 50.
  • Cui Yingshuang — Harem rival who initially dismissed Su Yunyan as an unfavored, childless concubine-born daughter. After Cui’s demotion to jieyu, she resents Su Yunyan’s rise to Consort Shu 47.
  • Zhu Rongyu — Rival backed by the empress dowager. Su Yunyan dislikes her disregard for rank and answers her taunts with pointed reminders of her own access to the emperor 47 49.
  • Consort De — The other holder of a four-consort rank at the time of Su Yunyan’s promotion; begins watching her more closely after her rise 47.
  • Song Jue — In the original novel, a young man Su Yunyan helped who later became an influential minister and supported her elevation to empress. That future relationship is described through Qiao Shuyi’s recollection rather than established in the current storyline 42.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Southern Tour and the Unnamed Rival

  • Securing Wu Commandery: Su Yunyan persuades Zongzheng Heng to include Wu Commandery in his southern tour, hoping to reunite with Su Jingyun and create an opportunity for his return to the capital 47.

  • The Wu silk dress: She follows maids carrying an elaborate dress toward the emperor’s bedchamber and suspects it belongs to another woman. Her indirect question over dinner produces only a recommendation that she wear azure gauze, leaving her doubts unresolved 49.
  • Lady Liu’s introduction: At Su Jingyun’s banquet, she persuades Zongzheng Heng to have Lady Liu examine his persistent migraines the following day 50.
  • Her brother’s marriage plans: When Su Jingyun reveals his love for Lady Liu, Su Yunyan agrees to speak on her behalf if the treatment succeeds, potentially obtaining an official appointment that would make the marriage more acceptable 50.
