Nature and Geography

  • A physical world: Unlike some analogous realms encountered by Chu Tianshu, his home world's Spirit Realm contains material landscapes and self-sustaining populations 275.
  • Uneven depth: Records compare it to a broad, uneven flatbread covered with hollows and rises. “Shallow” and “deep” regions differ sharply in inhabitants and danger 206.
  • Complex terrain: Mountains, plains, and basins have extraordinary differences in elevation. From above, it appears vaster, wilder, and more dangerous than Earth 489.
  • Approximate correspondence: Regions can correspond to locations in reality, but the two worlds differ greatly in terrain and area 496.
  • Subtle environmental differences: Within the realm itself, its Qi is less conspicuously concentrated than during an invasion of reality. A visitor with insufficient perception might notice difficulty surviving without recognizing the cause 203.

Documented Regions

Region Characteristics
Shallow regions Mostly inhabited by native species and spirits rather than powerful Ghost Gods. Some support villages and direct cultivation of farmland 206.
Deep regions Principal dwelling places of Ghost Gods. Even the sky above some deep regions is hostile to human travelers 206 445.
Southeastern correspondence Helai identifies the region corresponding to southeastern China as shallow. The origins of ghosts controlled by Mirror Ape do not establish that the god lives nearby 206.
Fanliang Land A base from which Helai conducts reconnaissance and considers territorial expansion to address incursions at their source 445.
Western Lingnan correspondence Includes dangerous deep regions filled with ravines, valleys, and mountains rising within an abyss 445.
Golden Triangle correspondence Lies in a deep region, partly within the Yu Mountain Clan's sphere of influence 439.
Zhenze and the lake islands Homeland of Xiao Zuo and Bubai. A persistent wall of fog east of the lake later spreads and carries them into reality; Chu Tianshu suspects a correspondence with Lake Tai 486 489.
Long Continent Kingdom Fangfeng kingdom isolated by strange fog for nearly a century. It possesses trains, extensive roads, production facilities, and bird-shaped weapons used against water demons 488 489 491 494.
Seas Many ocean areas belong to the deep zone. Staring into the dark sea makes Xiao Zuo and Bubai dizzy during their aerial journey 489.
Eastern Wasteland beyond the seas Contains the Flame Demon Clan's Eastern Extreme Mountain, Julingyutian Mountain, Li Mountain, and Warm Source Valley 571.

Inhabitants and Society

Ghosts and Evil Spirits

Souls that survive death may descend into the Spirit Realm and become ghosts. Its harsh conditions wear away much of their former personality, often leaving only deeply ingrained traits and a desire to prey on the living 3 68.

  • Powerful resentment can preserve a soul through its descent, but prolonged survival or the attention of a powerful creature may eventually destroy its mind and transform it into another kind of being 138.
  • While the realm was distant from reality, Ghost Gods could still intermittently observe the living world and draw wandering souls toward their territories. Mirror Ape's worshippers in Guangling helped explain its possession of ghosts originating there 206.
  • Becoming an evil spirit is not limited to ordinary posthumous transformation: Ghost God influence and sophisticated evil cultivation can also change a person's fundamental nature 540.

Native Peoples and Spirit Creatures

Not every inhabitant is an evil spirit, and hostility toward humanity is not universal 206 337.

People or Species Documented Traits
Village inhabitants Some closely resemble people from Chu Tianshu's homeland in speech, customs, and everyday behavior 203.
Fangfeng Clan Resemble humans and historically intermarried with them. Their skeletons differ substantially, and extra pores on their wrists or beneath their ribs aid music, chanting, and perception of moving air 488.
Night Wandering Lads A native race almost identical to humans in appearance; Chu Tianshu adopts this identity while traveling in Long Continent 491.
Treasure-Locking Ropes Two-headed, rope-like snakes that consume clear water and ores, perceive treasure light, and possess five escape techniques. Young fend for themselves after hatching 486.
White Bone Centipedes Can merge with humans, stimulate cultivation potential, and purify Mind Power or internal force, while gradually reshaping the host's mindset toward that of their population 132.
Divine-beast bloodline bearers Unlike evil spirits, their morality depends on the individual. Chu Tianshu considers the wolf-headed swordsman a likely example 337.
Powerful spirit creatures Some form pacts with living beings in the mortal world rather than operating through Ghost God worship 590.

Ghost Gods and Their Clans

  • Ghost Gods possess innate divine offices and an imposing presence despite their sinister nature. They can accept followers outside their own kind 590.
  • The Ghost Mother Clan descends from the Ghost Mother of Yu Mountain rather than from ordinary creatures transformed by Spirit Realm Qi. Its high priestess imposes rules on internal conflict and builds alliances with other powers 513 565 586.
  • The Yu Mountain priesthood favors priest-directed strategy over allowing Ghost Gods to act solely on instinct. Some descendants reincarnate into the human world and awaken memories of previous lives 431 439.
  • The Flame Demon Clan develops familiar puppets and pursues operations across the human world, including schemes to turn contract cultivators into production materials 571 574 592.
  • Inter-clan cooperation grows as human strength increases. Yu Mountain and the white apes support using the Long Continent affair as a foundation for a wider alliance 502.

Social development varies considerably. Chu Tianshu compares some communities to Ming–Qing society, while places dominated by Ghost Gods retain systems resembling the Spring and Autumn or Warring States periods—or earlier 208.

Connection to the Human World

Overflow Zones

An Overflow Zone forms when Spirit Realm influence spills into reality and alters a local environment 3.

  • Strange boundary fog prevents normal passage: people inside who try to leave return to the zone, while outsiders cannot enter 3.
  • The altered environment can give ghosts substantial physical power. The Ghost Scholar gains a tangible, unusually resistant body within one 3.
  • If the ghosts finish harming their victims, the zone dissipates and its Qi and supernatural contents recede 4.
  • If humans kill the ghosts, the zone is considered broken; some Spirit Realm substances can remain in reality 4.
  • Death, extreme emotions, complicated human conflicts, and disrupted feng shui make supernatural disturbances more likely 54.

The two environments also reject incompatible presences. Breaking an Overflow Zone forces its principal Spirit Realm presence back, while creatures outside suitable conditions may find reality increasingly intolerable 68 343.

Travel and Communication

The early belief that living people cannot enter the Spirit Realm is later qualified by documented exceptions and specialized methods 3 206.

Method Function and Limits
Mirage Art Ancient practitioners used mirages for journeys within the Spirit Realm. At sufficient mastery and under suitable conditions, the art permits travel between the worlds 206.
Yangtze River Bridge connection Years of Yao Qianshu's Mirage Art practice, combined with the bridge's human presence and feng shui significance, establish an unusual connection. Chu Tianshu's pure body and closely bound essence, Qi, and spirit allow his flesh to cross with him 206.
Water-mirror ritual Helai uses a water mirror and ritual furnace to project his thoughts to Chu Tianshu at Deer King Temple 206.
Soul-hosting bodies Allow visitors to operate in the realm through vessels. Helai's perception is weaker in such a body, complicating navigation through mist 302 488.
Cats' bodily entry Teacher Xiaobai can enter in his true body because of cats' unusual nature 302.
Spirit Track Formation Supports travel and supply transport between the worlds, but depends on the relevant powers and territorial conditions on the Spirit Realm side 439 441.
Mist crossings Can carry creatures into reality accidentally. Xiao Zuo and Bubai cross after becoming lost in expanding fog 486.
Inter-realm spaces Stable secret realms and Grotto-Heaven ruins can occupy the gap between reality and the Spirit Realm rather than either world proper 287 365.

Recognition and Fortune

  • Entry does not guarantee a free return. Some Spirit Realm captives gain reality's recognition and subsequently cannot return bodily at will, even through an established passage 489 512.
  • Xiao Zuo and Bubai can return body and soul, distinguishing their accidental crossing from the affected captives' circumstances 489.
  • Wangliang's exchange threatens to impose a corresponding loss of return upon displaced humans 512.
  • The Great Yu Dragon Stele can protect people's core Fortune, enabling an alternative arrangement of exchanges in batches followed by return after forty-nine days 512.
  • Ghost Gods covet mortal Fortune; powerful human kingdoms are especially attractive because humanity's Fortune represents the mortal world itself 565.

Resources and Cultivation

  • Spiritual agriculture: Shallow regions permit direct farming rather than reliance solely on herbs associated with ghosts or spirit creatures. A village's production of Water-Refined Solomon's Seal particularly excites Helai 206.
  • Plantations: Medicine specialists use different wavelengths of light to stimulate spiritual plants whose stamens and pistils mature at different times 471.
  • Food production: Spirit Realm-grown oats reach Chu Tianshu's household in reality 302.
  • Martial resources: Chu Tianshu collects herbs beneficial to the Sky-Spanning Divine Art and sends them to Principal Feng 223.
  • Foundation refinement: Feng Jianhua trains through an inferior but usable vessel, then uses the purified power as a starting point for refining his entire body's reserves 302.
  • Incursion remnants: Breaking an Overflow Zone can leave useful supernatural substances behind, including the Ghost Tooth plant 4.

History

Ancient Separation

During the crisis of the Wind of Dao Dissolution, immortals developed techniques and prepared Grotto-Heavens. Ghost Gods instead adopted methods of degeneration, discarding reason, following instinct, and binding themselves to the Spirit Realm's depths 431.

The realm later withdrew from the human world. Ancient observers initially blamed increasingly easy but dangerous cultivation breakthroughs on deeper overlap, only to discover that the connection was weakening. This prompted speculation about a force outside both worlds 196.

Renewed Contact

By Chu Tianshu's era, the worlds are drawing close again. Helai identifies the renewed connection as the cause of returning Overflow Zones, while later disturbances include monsters escaping into the Americas and increased supernatural activity in Aokigahara 195 439 581.

Chu Tianshu's accidental bodily arrival at Deer King Temple changes the practical understanding of the realm. His reports of villages and farmable resources lead Helai to propose a pilot support site, including outside specialists and irrigation work to address drought 201 206.

Subsequent efforts develop a plantation, communication routes, and reconnaissance around Fanliang Land. Helai considers expanding this foothold a way to tackle frequent incursions at their source 220 445 488.

Long Continent Exchange

Disappearances in Shencheng reveal Fangfeng inhabitants taking the places of humans who look exactly like them. Investigation leads Chu Tianshu and Helai through the mist into Long Continent Kingdom 487 488 489.

The kingdom's isolation and reflection-like relationship with reality prove connected to Divine Lord Wangliang, whose authority encompasses reflection and exchange. He has accumulated a century-long rite intended to exchange people and Fortune between the worlds 494 496 498 512.

Protection through the Great Yu Dragon Stele obstructs the full exchange. The resulting first large-scale exchange is managed through public instructions, registration, guides, and forty-nine-day stays; Chu Tianshu personally helps Feng Baili settle into reality 512 514.

Counterparts in Other Worlds

Chu Tianshu concludes that every world he has visited possesses something analogous to a Spirit Realm, but these counterparts differ in scale, substance, and function 275.

World or Counterpart Distinction
Weapon-spirituality world A blood-refinement ritual produces a faint presence rather than a true Overflow Zone. Chu Tianshu theorizes that its counterpart favors weapon spirituality instead of abundant ghosts and native species 91.
Mist and Rosy Clouds Realm Layer Threatens spirit communicators with contamination. Its influence helps explain the local development of “refining spirit into Qi” and later Martial Dao Divine Intent 161 164.
Republican-era Dragon Vein Reportedly contains no physical matter. Origin Canons of notable people have accumulated within it for thousands of years 275.
Wasteland world Spirit Realm landscapes become embedded in reality during the Cataclysm, enlarging terrain and disrupting transport without directly crushing geological strata. These landforms remain connected to their realm of origin 303 315.
Moon-associated counterpart Strange moonlight and the appearance of people who have “Attained the Dao” lead Chu Tianshu to speculate that this world's Spirit Realm may be on the moon; the identification is not confirmed 371.

In the wasteland, Forerunners of Ghosts and Gods can guide otherwise largely stationary Ghost God Dharma Aspects through populated areas. Embedded landforms also shelter monsters that hunt in reality and retreat when its rejection becomes unbearable; hybrids with mortal creatures develop over the following decades 303 315.
