Power Progression
The table distinguishes completed attainments from cultivation still in progress; confirmation chapters do not necessarily mark the original breakthrough.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spirit Communication Aperture Opening | 1 | Awakened at five years old through his family’s books and artifacts. His premature awakening left him vulnerable to external yin and evil influences. |
| Martial Aperture Opening | 16 | Can enter a boxer’s awakened state, gaining abundant Yang Qi and heightened danger awareness, but initially loses his spirit-medium vision while using it. |
| Dual-cultivation application | 27 | Recognizes the importance of combining both paths and switches his Aperture Opening from inward to outward during the fight with Chen Jingong. His perception extends into a faint circle five meters around him. |
| Weapon Soul: Inner Sage, Outer King | 103 | Gains true internal sight and the ability to reinforce his body against blows. |
| Direct bone tempering | 107 | Uses his Weapon Soul and the Sanqi Divine Sword’s stored Mind Power to temper his bones precisely, addressing his greatest physical weakness. |
| Vajra Samadhi, great accomplishment | 139 | The chapter identifies this attainment as he embraces his killing intent and delivers a Vajra strike that defeats Mo Shengyi. |
| Martial Stove God, confirmed | 145 | Has cultivated perception detailed enough to examine his bodily functions and assess the range and dissipation of projected force. |
| Internal cultivation established | 154 387 | Demonstrates exceptionally high-quality internal power. A later explanation identifies his first strand of internal force as Yellow Sprout True Qi. |
| Vertical and Horizontal Simple Seal; Refining Spirit into Qi | 181 | Deduces a method that converts Mind Power into internal power. Demonstrates wind-like control over four leaves, including recalling them with a gesture. |
| Nanhua True Interpretation / Nanhua Origin Canon | 250 260 | Acquires a compatible Origin Canon associated with Old Immortal Nanhua after his work against plague. Initially lacks sufficient mastery to integrate it smoothly into his fastest combat states. |
| Ready to attempt Taboo | 299 | His Sky-Spanning Divine Art is sufficient for an attempt, but he postpones it to strengthen his foundation and pursue the nine-nines realm of Sword Intent. |
| Taboo realm, confirmed | 363 387 | Studies the realm’s workings after entering it. He had already killed a Taboo martial artist in the wasteland before his own breakthrough. |
| True meridians | 468 | Possesses actual meridian structures, removing the bodily rejection that previously complicated his use of internal force. |
| Unified destructive conception | 481 529 | Links saber arts, sword arts, and Palm Thunder through a shared conception of destruction; later adapts their martial intent across different forms of attack. |
| Leakless Mystic Art, confirmed | 484 | Has achieved Leakless Mystic Art. Further progress toward Leakless Innate Nature requires accumulated tempering of his soul and will. |
| Three-technique cultivation framework | 514 | Mountain Collapse Combat Calculation, the General Outline of Superior Methods, and Grand Void Radiation form a cycle of learning moves, comprehending primordial Qi, and strengthening his foundation. |
| Non-Poison soul cultivation | 604 | Cultivates the Non-Poison soul while developing greater perception and prediction of weather and mountain-path changes. |
| Five Seven Souls Dantians completed | 629 | Two of his Seven Souls remain unconverted. Using an advanced move prematurely creates imbalance and signs of uncontrolled power overflow. |
| Six Po Dantians completed | 649 | Develops aerial acceleration by striking points of conflict between different kinds of primordial Qi. |
| Heavenly Dao’s Good Affinity manifestation | 656 | After studying medical teachings and contemplating the relationship between the Black Dragon Sword and Dragon-Subduing Divine Palms, produces multicolored light, heavenly flowers, and sweet springs. |
Background / History
Chu Tianshu’s parents disappeared, and his grandfather raised him after attempts to find them failed. Allowed to explore the family’s books and artifacts, he awakened spirit communication at five. The awakening came before his bones, Qi, and blood had matured, exposing him to influences that could cause nightmares, palpitations, and breathing difficulties 1.
He survived through diligent cultivation, mind-nurturing incantations, a protective artifact, and effective medicine. His grandfather died of illness several years before the opening, leaving him supported by family savings and his own earnings. By his twenties, however, the medicine had been losing effectiveness for two years 1.
His childhood nightmares sometimes drove him to thoughts of suicide. He later recalls that his refusal to die without taking revenge on the things tormenting him helped him endure. An alternate-world account of a similarly gifted boy who died young forces him to confront how close his own childhood had come to that outcome 303.
Appearance
Chu Tianshu has a youthful, refined appearance that contrasts with the heat and physical pressure his cultivated body can radiate 13 543.
- Face: Bright, open features; later descriptions emphasize sword-like brows and sharply defined eyes 4 543 549.
- Hair: Black, worn in locally appropriate styles during his travels, including a topknot and a bamboo hairpin 87 543.
- Clothing: His outfits include an embroidered blue robe and an azure outfit beneath a white robe patterned with ink-wash plum blossoms 87 543.
- Disguise: As Layman Tian, he adopts a thinner face, finer eyebrows, pale skin, and a deliberately measured gait 346.
- Cultivation alterations: Can manifest unusual eyes along his arm or move a Heavenly Eye onto his back during combat 470 508.
Personality
Chu Tianshu’s violent temper develops partly from years of nightmare-induced suffering. He follows his grandfather’s advice not to direct that anger at friends, family, or uninvolved people, but treats vicious enemies as an acceptable outlet. He is especially hostile toward people who abuse children 2 3 26.
His morality is firm without being indiscriminately punitive. He speaks of having an internal “scale” by which he judges people, distinguishes between lesser offenders and committed accomplices, and insists that responsibility and punishment be considered carefully when replacing a ruler. Cai Shanjun later notices that he has become more relaxed and attentive to small details 40 265 451.
He loves martial arts enough to praise an enemy’s excellent technique spontaneously. That enthusiasm does not make him a rigid duelist: he accepts ambushes, cooperation, deception, and environmental advantages when dealing with dangerous opponents. He regards martial arts as a means of expanding a person’s choices, not narrowing them 193 217 355 629.
Abilities & Skills
Spirit Communication and Witch Medicine
His inherited art comes from the Annotations on Ghost Gate Witch Medicine. His natural aptitude lies in communicating with spirits, expelling evil, and commanding souls, although he did not learn ghost-nurturing as a child 3 407.
- Empowers silver needles for penetration; early in the story, a full-strength shot can pierce an inch-thick camphorwood board from over five meters away 3.
- Uses traces and a silver needle to track the stolen family medical text 52.
- Detects evil Qi and powerful evil-spirit presences 59.
- Stabilizes souls, interrogates them through bewitchment, and collects the souls of defeated creatures 205 331 374.
- Early needle attacks are substantially less effective against a ghost strengthened by an Overflow Zone 3.
Medical Expertise
Chu Tianshu combines diagnosis, acupuncture, prescriptions, and supernatural treatment 6 31.
- Identifies likely ailments through observation and checks unfamiliar medicinal ingredients before committing to large-scale production 6 7.
- Uses psychic power to sterilize a silver needle before treating Cai Shanjun 31.
- Applies anatomical knowledge offensively, disabling Xu Youjiang through a vulnerable sinew in his foot 47.
- Studies the Heavenly Wolf Sect’s medical canon and receives a scripture containing Great Brahma Prajna and discussions of harmony 656.
Martial Arts and Combat Adaptation
His foundation includes Tongbei Fist, Taiji-derived Palm Thunder, and the Storming Shaolin fist forms. Before genuine martial advancement, he requires the Ghost Gate Reverse Stimulation Needle to perform part of the boxing manuals’ real techniques 3 40 83.
- Combines explosive, drilling, expanding, penetrating, and shaking forces within a single punch 218.
- Freely switches and mixes the intent of mastered techniques without the obstruction other practitioners experience 384.
- Transfers saber and sword intent into palms, fists, or fingers rather than remaining bound to a weapon’s shape 387 529 600.
- Can still be injured by unfamiliar counters: Monk Busha’s reversed supreme techniques damage his left fist before he adapts 539.
Inner Sage, Outer King and the Sanqi Weapon Soul
His Weapon Soul provides inward vision and outward reinforcement 103.
- Examines tissue, blood vessels, muscle fibers, and bones at adjustable depths 103.
- Reinforces weapons and improvised projectiles; an ordinary iron sword becomes capable of cutting iron and resisting substantial sideways pressure 104.
- Coordinates stored Mind Power for precise bodily tempering 107.
- Can control his body while his own consciousness is absent; its survival is supported by concentrated Mind Power and pure blood and Qi 147.
- Allows Sanqi to fight independently when he releases the hilt or cannot wield it himself 412 647.
Internal Power and Primordial Qi
His internal cultivation develops from Yellow Sprout True Qi through the Sky-Spanning Divine Art and later Grand Void methods 189 387 514.
- Converts Mind Power into internal power through the Vertical and Horizontal Simple Seal 181.
- Alters released power with a thought while it remains within his sensing range, including reserves hidden underground 387.
- Uses the Nanhua Origin Canon to extract primal Qi from physical sources; its efficiency and availability depend on the material involved 363 408.
- Draws on comprehended essences without requiring a matching visible substance nearby—for example, water essence does not require nearby water 408.
- Combines multiple attributes through the General Outline of Superior Methods, but intense attacks can still consume reserves faster than he replenishes them 482.
Great Void Heavenly Eye and Grand Void Radiation
The Great Void Heavenly Eye supports both perception and direct combat 441 508.
- Subtly influences an opponent’s movements, helping Yungu anticipate Sahong’s evasions 441.
- Directs Grand Void Inner Force into precisely calculated weaknesses in a weapon 528.
- Can manifest on his back and emit glowing green particles against an incoming attack 508.
- Does not guarantee complete protection: the saber strike it blocks still penetrates his body and makes him cough blood 508.
Mountain Collapse Combat Calculation
Mountain Collapse Combat Calculation learns the form and spirit of moves, while the General Outline of Superior Methods derives corresponding primordial Qi from their intent. Grand Void Radiation strengthens the foundation supporting both 514.
- Analyzes structural weak points with enough precision to calculate their depths 528.
- Incorporates previously learned arts into a common combat framework 559.
- After six Po Dantians are cultivated, identifies conflicts between surrounding types of primordial Qi and strikes them to accelerate through the air 649.
Dragon King Coming Ashore
Chu Tianshu activates this forbidden move by driving blood needles into his body, producing a crystalline, radiation-wielding transformation while retaining mental clarity 508.
- Twists and joins his true meridians to imitate a building’s structure, exploiting the weakness of Yu Huangfen’s Returning Light saber Qi 508.
- Turns the resulting elastic attacks into surfaces for deflection and acceleration 508.
- Is explicitly not proof of Returning Light attainment; he has still not reached that realm in a later battle 528.
Leadership and Institution-Building
He builds organizations capable of administering the territory his victories make available 175 227.
- Plans to turn Southern Shaolin into a martial arts school and military academy while retaining its public connections 175.
- Seeks helpers who can control defeated troops and take over civil affairs after his attacks 227.
- Prioritizes sect recruits with ordinary working backgrounds and sympathy for common people 392.
- Oversees Jingxiang’s development, reviews road-repair reports, and orders rewards for effective work 604.

Trivia
- Despite being mistaken for a Daoist during his first ghost battle, he explicitly states that he never claimed to be one 4.
- His early swordplay is largely adapted from fist manuals; before developing familiarity through his Weapon Soul, he handles a sword more like a steel whip or iron cudgel 114.
- He recognizes that his greatest innate aptitude is spirit communication, yet deliberately pursues martial arts because he loves them 407.
- The “aloof and taciturn” behavior reported from Yongchun occurs while his Weapon Soul is operating his body and waiting for its master to return 147 180.
