Power Progression

Chu Tianshu’s Documented Development

  • These are milestones in Chu Tianshu’s use of Mind Power, not a universal sequence of cultivation realms.
Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Needle empowerment 3 Using the Annotations on Ghost Gate Witch Medicine, he can drive a silver needle through an inch-thick hard-camphorwood board from more than five meters away.
External storage and compression 74 The Three-Seven Sword, also called the Sanqi Divine Sword, stores and concentrates his Mind Power, improving its quality for healing and combat.
Compressed-power control limitation 95 Although stronger, the stored power permits only very low or very high output rather than the fine adjustments possible with his original Mind Power.
Weapon Soul-assisted precision 107 112 His Weapon Soul lets him precisely regulate the sword’s concentrated reserves, temper his bones, and circulate the power throughout his body through Inner Sage, Outer King.
Improved personal Mind Power 116 After cultivating a Weapon Soul, the Lesser Yang Blood River Chariot improves his own Mind Power’s quality. Without the sword, he can now project temporarily visible lines rather than only formless impacts.
Bodily absorption 141 His body completely absorbs the sword’s remaining concentrated reserves as he reaches the Martial Stove God state.
Refining Spirit into Qi 181 He successfully transforms Mind Power into internal power. It joins power produced through Refining Essence into Qi, broadening its properties without another increase in purity.
Concealment of Qi-and-blood flames 209 Using Helai’s method, he stores his three golden flames inside his brain’s Mind Power, with internal force mediating their integration.
Sword Intent refinement 249 Through the Nine-Nine Tribulation Ash God-Startling Sword, he can maintain roughly twenty-seven refinements in combat and more than forty with strenuous concentration outside combat. The Sanqi Divine Sword no longer provides much further concentration at this level.
Primordial Qi conversion 582 He draws in more than a dozen attributes of primordial Qi, converts them into Mind Power within his physical body, and channels that power into his expanding soul body.

Nature and Cultivation

Mental and Spiritual Origin

Mind Power is normally formless and intangible, arising from the practitioner’s mind and spirit 3.

  • Spirit mediums able to maintain their spiritual senses for more than five hours a day have generally developed Mind Power 3.
  • Aptitude and training shape its properties. A practitioner’s Mind Power can reinforce existing preferences without necessarily rewriting their personality 62.
  • It is not identical to martial presence: a threatening scene can possess a presence without emitting Mind Power. The intent behind a martial move also includes bodily condition, personal pursuits, and environmental factors beyond Mind Power alone 130 384.

Visualization and Training

Visualization is a foundational skill in spirit-medium cultivation 91.

  • Beginners must sustain detailed mental images without stray thoughts interrupting them. With sufficient training, they can visualize while chanting incantations or drawing talismans 91.
  • Chu Tianshu spends more time learning this foundation than he later spends learning individual acupuncture techniques 91.
  • In the Mirage Lineage, beginners project a false reflection onto clear water. Training progresses through different liquids and vessels until the practitioner can produce three-dimensional illusions 200.
  • Accumulation and refinement are separate concerns. The Vertical and Horizontal Simple Seal cannot fully develop Chu Tianshu’s strengthened brain, whereas the more extreme Nine-Nine Tribulation Ash God-Startling Sword can unlock that potential 259.

Relationship with the Brain

Mind Power involves the brain but does not automatically make it physically tougher 120.

  • An ordinary Mind Power cultivator can still suffer a concussion if struck unexpectedly 120.
  • In human spirit communicators, the pineal gland mainly coordinates time perception and contributes little to Mind Power’s strength 495.
  • Among Fangfeng clansmen, the pineal gland supplies nearly half that strength. This concentrated source makes stimulated bursts more pronounced 495.
  • Strong Mind Power need not result from deliberate cultivation: the black dragon possesses exceptional innate mental power despite lacking corresponding technique 564.

Higher-Level Transformation

  • Upon entering the Taboo realm, the power of both martial artists and spirit mediums undergoes a qualitative change. Names for the resulting power include Dao Power, Dao Qi, Myriad Manifestations Secret Qi, and Divine Essence Magic Power 299.
  • Greater capacity does not guarantee complete methods for using it. Existing Taboo inheritances lack detailed guidance for fully exploiting the realm’s physical and mental qualities 299.

Abilities and Applications

Object Empowerment and Control

Mind Power can empower external objects, an ability also called object control 3.

  • Its effectiveness depends on lineage and training, not simply an object’s weight or hardness. A talisman specialist may make yellow paper cut into a table yet fail to control a similarly weighted metal blade 3.
  • Some schools specialize in changing an object’s course; others emphasize penetration 3.
  • Chu Tianshu’s early needle technique can penetrate a human body if it misses bone, but barely enters the Ghost Scholar’s Overflow Zone-enhanced body 3.
  • At a theoretical level, a sufficiently accomplished master should be able to invest mental power into grass as effectively as into a sword; actual mastery does not necessarily reach that ideal 620.

Healing and Bodily Reinforcement

A physician’s Mind Power naturally possesses restorative and recuperative effects 74.

  • The Sanqi Divine Sword concentrates these properties enough for Chu Tianshu to treat some illnesses without a prescription and eradicate Yin Fengxin’s Kidney Jade Evil Spirit 74.
  • Acupuncture can guide Mind Power to stimulate bodily potential, but Chu Tianshu’s early method imposes a heavy burden and lasts less than ten minutes 3 112.
  • Weapon Soul-assisted circulation later allows concentrated Mind Power to work in harmony with his sinews, bones, and organs 112.
  • The Mahākāla Divine Arrow Heart Mantra takes another route: visualization imposes a chosen quality upon the body rather than developing each part’s existing potential. The aptitude required is rarer than ordinary spirit-medium talent 362.

Mental and Soul Attacks

Mind Power directly interacts with perception, emotion, and the soul 79 579.

  • A strike charged with extreme emotion can produce intimidation beyond its physical damage. Chu Tianshu briefly overwhelms Nie Longding’s perception this way despite never having studied illusions 79.
  • The Jade-Bodied Infant can project a field that alters living beings’ perceived temperature 82.
  • Gomorrah’s Mind Power Field strikes the soul so strongly that its aftershocks make Jon’s body react as though physically pushed. Its configuration minimizes interaction with air while maximizing effects on living beings 579.
  • Li Tao’s sugar figures demonstrate a benign application: their Mind Power lifts mood and provides modest restorative benefits 198.

Perception and Tracking

  • Residual Mind Power can be collected after a spell is cast. Chu Tianshu uses traces left by Kong Wenju to support needle-based tracking 54.
  • A steady supply of Mind Power can make a silver needle point toward a fleeing soul 218.
  • Chu Tianshu uses Mind Power to examine enemies’ meridians, Qi and blood, and distinctive brain structures 368.
  • A probing use does not necessarily influence the target’s decisions. Chu Tianshu rejects Mao Shanwei’s suspicion that an earlier probe caused his change of heart 332.

Talismans, Refinement, and Protective Effects

  • Mind Power can be used to draw projected talismanic lines, though unsupported writing generally does not endure for long 116 368.
  • Lady Wang’s Gather Thoughts as Ink stabilizes those thoughts into lasting talismanic writing. Her Cast Talismans into Shadows conceals completed spells within shadows 368.
  • The Medicinal Mercury Secret Art repeatedly refines mercury and 137 medicinal essences with Mind Power, producing a controllable, shape-changing substance that protects its user and poisons enemies 141.
  • Ghosts can weave a persistent protective layer of Mind Power around their master, remaining effective even if their connection is briefly interrupted 573.
  • Chu Tianshu can stir air into a weak protective circulation that removes dust and impurities, although it cannot reliably stop even a small slingshot pebble 61.

Lineages and Specialized Properties

Lineage / Method Characteristic Properties
Ghost Gate Witch Medicine Emphasizes medical applications and needle penetration rather than exceptional Mind Power quality. Chu Yannian’s Mind Power is recognizable as belonging to this lineage 3 118 302.
Secret Incantations of Vertical and Horizontal Chu Tianshu associates its fluctuations with biting cold, initial freshness, and an underlying impression of iron and blood 198.
Feng shui lineage Its Mind Power evokes damp soil—relaxing when faint, suffocating when dense. Internal power refined from it retains lineage-related properties 198 225.
Mirage Lineage Uses water-based visualization to develop false reflections and eventually three-dimensional illusions 200.
Li Tao’s sugar-figure craft Produces unusually harmless Mind Power with warming, mood-lifting, and restorative effects 198.
Mahākāla Divine Arrow Heart Mantra Initially directs Mind Power entirely into bodily empowerment rather than external objects 362.
Demonic Consciousness Reverses Life Returns emotions, desires, and accumulated thoughts toward innate wisdom, releasing greater Mind Power near death 405 408.
Ancestor Qianyang’s methods The Temple Beyond the Mind harmonizes different mist-and-rosy-clouds Mind Powers during cultivation. His combat palm art interlocks them into pearl-like structures that draw external power from the Mist and Rosy Clouds Realm Layer 627.
  • Sanqi Divine Sword / Three-Seven Sword — Stores and compresses Mind Power, but its release rate remains limited by the wielder. Filling it does not allow Chu Tianshu to discharge all its reserves at once 74.
  • Weapon Soul — Gives Chu Tianshu fine control over the sword’s compressed reserves and supports whole-body circulation 107 112.
  • Sky-Spanning Divine Art — Unites power derived from essence and spirit. During combat, Chu Tianshu can transform blood, Qi, and Mind Power into internal force 181 190.
  • Specially refined golden playing card — Created by a master and disciple using Mind Power to fuse seven gemstones with recording tape, preserving the master’s ghost wife 68.
  • Divided Spirit Blood Curse — An external technique that does not require a particular exclusive type of Mind Power, unlike some lineage-dependent spells 209.

Limitations and Counters

Limitation Documented Effect
Mental backlash Directly attacking evil spirits with Mind Power sends backlash into the practitioner’s own mind 140.
Yang Qi resistance Mind Power spells are repelled by Yang Qi. Affecting many people simultaneously increases the burden and backlash 145.
Overexertion Chu Tianshu suspects Su Ha pushed his Mind Power far enough to rupture blood vessels in his brain during their clash 72.
Quality versus control Compressed power can be stronger but less responsive. Chu Tianshu initially cannot finely regulate the Sanqi Divine Sword’s reserves 95.
Inefficient interaction with matter Mind Power is insubstantial; directly controlling substantial air wastes considerable power 154.
Spell incompatibility Another caster’s residual Mind Power is generally rejected as an “external evil.” This does not inherently mean it is genuinely sinister 54.
Vulnerability to specialized intent Demonic saber intent cuts through the sword’s medicinal Mind Power and substantially wounds its Sword Soul 185.
Destruction of cultivation foundations The Blade of Remembrance magnifies Jia Fang’s grief until it crushes both his spirit and the foundation of his Mind Power cultivation 291.
Conversion into poison The Saber Intent afflicting Fang Tai turns contacting soul Mind Power into corpse poison, making resistance with his own power counterproductive 496.
Release speed Pure Mind Power cultivation relies on laborious visualization; its discharge is slower than the mental Fist Intent strike of a profound Heart and Blood Martial Dao practitioner 460.

Historical Development

In one world Chu Tianshu visits, he deduces that early cultivators began with Spirit Communication Aperture Opening and Mind Power. Their spells were extraordinary, but the path brought shortened lives, unstable emotions, and dangers associated with the Mist and Rosy Clouds Realm Layer 161.

According to his reconstruction, cultivators gradually concentrated on circulating internal Qi instead. Later generations developed internal Qi before Mind Power and eventually lost knowledge of Mind Power cultivation itself. This separation motivates his work toward a method connecting the two paths 161.
