Background / History
Captivity and Defense of the Monkeys
During Sun Wukong’s long absence to learn cultivation arts, the Demon King of Havoc repeatedly preyed on the Water Curtain Cave monkeys. Gray Monkey was once captured and chained in a beast pen at Water Filth Cave, where the demons intended to offer his brains to their king. He escaped through a concealed rock passage connected to an underground waterway 13 14.
When the demon king’s underlings surrounded a starving monkey troop, Gray Monkey and another older gray-furred monkey stood at the front with wooden sticks. Despite trembling, they shielded a young golden-haired monkey after he angered the toad demon leading the attackers. Jiang Zhe intervened and burned the attacking demons 12.
Guiding Jiang Zhe to Water Filth Cave
Gray Monkey initially urged Jiang Zhe not to confront the Demon King of Havoc. After Jiang Zhe insisted, he volunteered to guide him, warning that the demon king was organizing an alliance with the Seventy-Two Cave Demon Kings. He sent his younger brother back with the little monkeys and offered his former escape route as a fallback if the battle went badly 13.
At Water Filth Cave, Gray Monkey spotted attendants belonging to several other demon kings and again suggested retreat. When Jiang Zhe chose to fight, Gray Monkey located the underground river to prepare an escape route. From there, he witnessed Jiang Zhe kill the Demon King of Havoc with a single slash and roared in celebration 14 15.
After Jiang Zhe destroyed the remaining demons, Gray Monkey told him about a rumored heavenly treasure inside the cave. His information prompted their search of the lair 16.
Rescue of the Human Captives
Gray Monkey armed himself with a discarded iron staff and scouted ahead as they entered Water Filth Cave. Inside, he helped free the human prisoners, dug graves for the dead, and comforted the surviving women and children. Jiang Zhe’s system recorded 37 humans rescued 17.
After Jiang Zhe found the Condensed Essence Lingzhi, Gray Monkey crushed leaves into spring water and distributed the medicine to the survivors. Jiang Zhe also gave him a leaf for himself. Gray Monkey promised to escort the humans safely to the nearest town, even at the cost of his life, and departed after arranging to welcome Jiang Zhe later with monkey wine 17 18.
Reunion and Hospitality
Nearly half a year later, Gray Monkey welcomed Jiang Zhe back to Water Curtain Cave and confirmed that the rescued humans had reached safety. He explained that a little girl had subsequently visited the mountain, but the monkeys sent her away because other demon kings still made the area dangerous for humans 22.
Gray Monkey reported that a powerful yaksha from the East Sea had attacked a merchant caravan. He then served his saved monkey wine to Jiang Zhe and Weaver Girl. When Jiang Zhe refined the wine through the Eight-Nine Arcane Arts, the resulting aura forced both gray-monkey brothers to their knees 22.
Before Jiang Zhe departed, Gray Monkey gave him a map of the four great continents and promised to keep good wine ready for future visits. He also supplied silver that Jiang Zhe later used to rent accommodation near Mount Hua 23 27.
Tiger-Taming Arhat’s Attack
Seeking information about Jiang Zhe and the treasures associated with Water Filth Cave, Tiger-Taming Arhat forcibly searched Gray Monkey’s soul. Gray Monkey convulsed and foamed at the mouth before the Arhat discarded him. The stolen memories revealed Jiang Zhe’s fiery armor and his battle against the Demon King of Havoc 25 27 28.
Sun Wukong returned during the attack. Gravely wounded, Gray Monkey reached toward him, wept when Wukong took his hand, and lost consciousness. After driving Tiger-Taming away, Wukong began channeling magic into Gray Monkey’s body. The other monkey elders identified Gray Monkey as the one who knew the details of their human benefactor 28 29.
Appearance
- Build and age: An older, large, burly monkey, distinguished from his gray-furred companion by his greater bulk 12 13.
- Fur: Gray; the heat from Jiang Zhe’s armor makes it begin to curl even though Jiang Zhe is not attacking him 14.
- Eyes: Normally bright and lively, before Tiger-Taming’s soul search causes them to roll white 28.
Personality
Gray Monkey is frightened by powerful enemies but willing to act despite that fear. He stands between armed demons and the young monkeys, then returns to the place of his former captivity to guide Jiang Zhe. His caution remains practical: he warns about enemy reinforcements and prepares an escape route rather than relying solely on Jiang Zhe’s confidence 12 13 14.
He is compassionate toward victims beyond his own clan. Recognizing the human captives’ despair from his own people’s suffering, he frees and reassures them, buries their dead, and undertakes their escort to safety 17.
His gratitude toward Jiang Zhe is expressed through service and hospitality. He repeatedly calls him “Benefactor,” shares information and supplies, and offers his saved wine. His tearful reunion with Sun Wukong also shows his enduring attachment to the absent monkey king 17 22 23 28.
