Background / History
Purple Fairy and the Weaver Girl Star
Originally known as the Purple Fairy, she received the Weaver Girl Star as her destiny star from the Jade Emperor and thereafter became known as Weaver Girl. None of her six sisters received a destiny star. By her own account, she is the only one of the Seven Fairies to have mastered her natal star 41 43.
Her descent to the mortal world coincides with a tribulation of love. The Jade Emperor explains that Cowherd is only one part of that tribulation: his death removes the original participant, but does not end the trial itself 11.
The Stolen Garment
While Weaver Girl bathes with six other fairies, Cowherd steals her cloud-patterned robe. Old Yellow Ox secretly places a thread of yellow Buddhist light inside it. Jiang Zhe identifies the scheme as an attempt to manipulate her through Dingguang Joyful Buddha’s methods, with Weaver Girl serving as a preliminary target before Yang Chan 4.
Jiang Zhe kills Old Yellow Ox, while a stray spark also kills Cowherd. He subsequently returns Weaver Girl’s garment, averting his eyes and leaving without asking for anything. Because she had stored her magical power in the robe, its loss had left her unable to resolve the situation herself 6 7.
After dressing, Weaver Girl discovers a karmic thread connecting her to Jiang Zhe, nearly equal to a life-saving debt. Realizing that losing the garment might have led to something far worse, she pursues him to repay him 7.
Repaying Jiang Zhe
When Jiang Zhe asks for a cultivation method capable of making him an immortal, Weaver Girl promises to find one. Before returning to heaven, she casts Vega’s Protection on him and tells him to follow her star toward Mount Hua 8.
She secretly enters her father’s library and takes the Eight-Nine Arcane Arts and Fire Virtue True Art, choosing the latter to complement Jiang Zhe’s fire abilities. The Jade Emperor observes her departure without intervening, destroys a trace of Buddhist karma, and decides to let her choose her own path through the remaining love tribulation 10 11.
Weaver Girl later delivers both jade slips to Jiang Zhe. She remains in the mortal world, accompanies him to the Water Curtain Cave, and transports him by cloud while he studies the Eight-Nine Arcane Arts 20 21.
Travels and Discovery at Mount Hua
At the Water Curtain Cave, a bowl of twenty-year-old monkey wine leaves Weaver Girl heavily intoxicated. She openly expresses her attraction to Jiang Zhe and her wish to repay him, then accompanies him across the East Sea and onward to Mount Hua 22 23 24 26.
While staying near Mount Hua, she notices another star becoming intertwined with her own and begins to suspect that Jiang Zhe is her heaven-chosen partner. Chang’e independently sees a Heaven-Ordained Marriage Thread joining the Weaver Girl Star to a mortal star 27 31.
Weaver Girl witnesses the destruction of Joyful Boy’s reincarnated body in Liu Family Village. Yang Chan notices her and summons her for a meeting. Although anxious about being sent home, Weaver Girl recognizes the Buddhist power involved and suspects Jiang Zhe caused the fire. Yang Chan warns her to leave before Yang Jian arrives to investigate 37 38 39.
Heaven-Ordained Romance and Return
With the Weaver Girl Star’s assistance, the vacant Cowherd Star chooses Jiang Zhe and transforms into the Black Rhino Star. A powerful marriage thread joins the two stars, affecting both Jiang Zhe and Weaver Girl; the two kiss and become lovers 40 41 42.
Jiang Zhe promises to take responsibility for her and insists that no one will separate them. Weaver Girl asks him to master his destiny star’s talent and come to the Heavenly Court as a star official, hoping they can then remain together 42.
Despite his offer to protect her in the mortal world, she returns to heaven because she has duties of her own and fears discovery by Yang Jian. Before leaving, she asks Jiang Zhe to visit her and suggests meeting secretly through their neighboring stars 42 43.
Appearance
Weaver Girl is described as exceptionally beautiful, with a spiritual quality that immediately impresses Gray Monkey 22.
- Hair: Long and silver-white 7.
- Eyes: Compared to stars 7 40.
- Clothing: A gauzy immortal robe bearing Vega patterns and sparkling with starlight 7.
- Voice: Sweet and delicate 24.
- Distinctive manner: Sometimes sits on a patch of starlight with her bare feet swinging beneath her 8.
Personality
Weaver Girl is cheerful, inquisitive, and sheltered. She eagerly questions Jiang Zhe about mortal cultivators, enjoys wandering through markets, and becomes absorbed in masks and puppets. Jiang Zhe finds her far more playful and talkative than the gentle, restrained figure he remembers from legend 8 24 26.
She takes gratitude seriously. Rather than dismissing the karmic debt created by her rescue, she searches the imperial library for techniques suited to Jiang Zhe. Her choice of a fire method reflects her attention to the abilities she had sensed from him 10 20.
Her affection is direct, but she remains wary of heavenly rules and her family’s scrutiny. She fears being recalled from the mortal world, yet ultimately insists that she has responsibilities beyond staying at Jiang Zhe’s side 27 38 42.
