History

Ancient Source Realm and Great Tribulation

The Ancient Source Realm encompassed numerous astral realms, each containing hundreds or thousands of Supremes and governed by a Lord of the Astral Realm. Its oldest birthplace and most prosperous core was the Heavenly Emperor Great Star Realm Domain, where the Heart of the Source Realm resided 342 392.

The former Great Emperor Venerable guarded the Heart and regarded its safety as more important than his own life. During the invasion by the Spirit God Universe, he was killed in a treacherous attack. Thirteen Creation Gods shattered the Heart, triggering the Source Realm Great Tribulation 392 417.

The catastrophe destroyed vast territories and killed immeasurable numbers of living beings. The Heart broke into 129,600 Chaos Pearls, while the devastated realm became the Ancient Realm Ruins 238 300 343.

Preservation of the Surviving Realm

Five Origin Venerables held back the world-ending tribulation, tore the Vermilion Bird Spirit Platform Star Domain free, and moved it into another region of the void. They erected a new realm barrier around the rescued territory, establishing the surviving Source Realm 297 336 343.

According to Patriarch Cansha, only twenty or thirty Supremes survived the calamity. Those survivors accepted disciples and spread their teachings. The five rescuers disappeared, and their identities became unknown to the realm’s inhabitants; Heavenly Venerable Fanti later inferred that Immortal Venerable Hongluo had been among them 297 343.

The surviving realm gradually expanded by absorbing Chaos and incorporating worlds brought by Supremes and Sages. Despite this growth, it remained vastly smaller than the Ancient Source Realm 287 296.

Lin Yunji’s Arrival and Settlement

Lin Yunji initially regarded the Source Realm as a potential threat because the Devil Master might have originated there. Daoist Bailou later clarified that Ancestor Wujie’s attempt to seize the Chaos Pearl and Primordial World was a personal undertaking, not an action supported by the realm as a whole 213 239.

A Realm Tide swept Lin Yunji into Lesser Central Heaven, and his party became stranded at the Sea of Hatred. After establishing himself in the realm, he embedded the intact Primordial World within the Great Sage Realm and expanded the surrounding territory into his sanctuary 275 296 323.

Taixuan subsequently challenged prominent Supremes across the Source Realm, defeating figures including Kunsheng and Patriarch Cansha. When the Spirit God Universe invaded again, Immortal Venerable Hongluo summoned the region’s Venerables to Void Heaven to support the defense of the Primordial Expanse Ancient City 355 359 366.

Reconstruction

After Lin Yunji and eleven companions removed the Primordial Sea from the Spirit God Universe, triggering its collapse, Hongluo proposed clearing the Source Realm Ruins and merging the scattered major realms into a rebuilt Source Realm 403.

Clearing the ruins did not make them habitable. Their spatial structure remained unstable, and slight disturbances produced spatial fluctuations and void torrents. Formations and treasures failed to resolve the problem, making restoration of the Heart of the Source Realm essential 416.

Lin Yunji accepted the position of Source Realm Emperor Venerable and refined the restored Heart. Its influence stabilized space and drew the shattered great realms together. The universe’s experts then relocated scattered domains—including the Jupiter Great Domain and Spirit Platform Star Domain—into their former positions 417.

Supremes established new sanctuaries across the resettled lands, while Lin Yunji moved to the Heavenly Emperor Great Domain to guard the Heart. After a hundred billion years, the Source Realm was reestablished and its civilization began flourishing again 417.

Much later, Demon Venerable Zhiyan returned and attempted to claim rulership. He discovered that more than ten of the realm’s experts had reached the Hunyuan Great Emperor realm, and Lin Yunji effortlessly subdued him 438.

Geography

Scale and Boundaries

  • Immense size: Daoist Bailou estimated that even a hundred million mature great worlds combined would not match the surviving Source Realm’s size 240.
  • Outer enclosure: Its territories lay within an enormous mass of Chaos Qi, protected by the barrier established by the five Origin Venerables 275 320.
  • Internal separation: Some regions connected directly; others were isolated by world barriers 275.
  • Attached worlds: The rebuilt realm supported worlds of every size, described as being as numerous as the sands of the Ganges 438.
  • Relation to Chaos: Despite its scale, the Source Realm remained a tiny speck compared with the surrounding void and Chaos 355.

Sixteen Regions

The surviving Source Realm was divided into sixteen regions arranged in three vertical tiers. This layout is documented before the later reconstruction 275.

Tier Regions
Upper Sea of Illusion; Causeless Heaven Realm; Great Sage Realm; Void Heaven 275.
Middle Lesser Cold Domain; Great Cold Domain; Daluo Domain; Douluo Realm; Great Central Heaven 275.
Lower Mountain and Sea Heaven; Mandala Realm; Mandala Heaven Domain; Lesser Central Heaven; Realm of Suffering; Mysterious Heaven; Demonic Dao Realm 275.

Notable Locations

Location Description
Sea of Hatred Dangerous dead sea between Great Central Heaven and Lesser Central Heaven. It formed from a slain Supreme’s lingering hatred and grew through the thoughts of fallen Sages 275.
Void Heaven Location of the Supreme Hall and a gathering point for Supremes answering the Origin Venerables’ summons 287 366 367.
Mandala Realm Resource-rich region whose seventeen Supremes warned Lin Yunji against starting disputes. Kunsheng was their acknowledged leader 303 309.
Great Cold Domain One of two worlds brought to the Source Realm by Ice-Cold Supreme Venerable. Her presence made it a lethal forbidden zone, dangerous even to Supremes 313 314.
Lesser Cold Domain The other world brought by Ice-Cold Supreme Venerable. It became habitable after merging with the Source Realm and housed cold-adapted races and cultivators of desolation and ice-related Great Daos 313 314.
Primordial World Embedded within the Great Sage Realm with its own world barrier intact, rather than completely merged into the Source Realm 323 324.
Heavenly Emperor Great Domain Seat of Lin Yunji’s sanctuary after reconstruction and the traditional location associated with guarding the Heart 417.
Land of Eternal Slumber Vast burial ground named by the Supremes during the clearing of the Ancient Realm Ruins 416.

Realm Tide

  • Cause: Expansion and contraction of the realm barrier, accompanied by shifts in Chaos currents 292.
  • Underlying growth: The Source Realm continually absorbed Chaos, while imported worlds further increased its size 296.
  • Travel hazard: Active tides drove Chaos inward and disrupted passage between regions. One swept Lin Yunji into Lesser Central Heaven 292 296.
  • Traversal: Lin Yunji later carried his companions safely through a Realm Tide aboard the Heaven-Monitoring Hall 328.

Ancient Realm Ruins

  • Separate from the surviving realm: The Ancient Realm occupied the former location of the Source Realm and was countless times larger than the rescued territory 287 336.
  • Restricted access: Space-time rifts prevented safe entry from ordinary Chaos. The Supreme Hall provided the only known safe route 287.
  • Hazards: Shattered space-time limited divine senses; other dangers included killing karma, corpse monsters, specters formed from Supremes’ hatred, and debris-filled Chaos torrents capable of crushing a Supreme 336 392.
  • Opportunities: The ruins contained lost treasures and sanctuaries, including Primordial Expanse Supreme Treasures left behind by ancient casualties 287 295.
  • Later use: After clearance and spatial stabilization, the ruins became the foundation for rebuilding the Source Realm 413 416 417.

Heart of the Source Realm

  • Structural foundation: The Heart supported the entire realm. Its destruction caused the Great Tribulation, while its restoration stabilized the shattered space 416 417.
  • Fragmentation: Its 129,600 fragments became Chaos Pearls. Reuniting them could restore the Ancient Source Realm’s world heart 300.
  • Authority: Possession of the Heart was equivalent to lordship over the Source Realm 417.
  • Lin Yunji’s control: After refining it as his natal Law Treasure, Lin Yunji could perceive every movement throughout the realm and control its contents with a thought 417.
  • Mobility: Once active, the Heart did not have to remain permanently in the Heavenly Emperor Great Domain. Its safety, rather than a fixed location, was essential 417.

Government and Major Powers

Before Reconstruction

  • Independent territories: The Source Realm was not a unified faction. Supremes governed their own territories, and no single power represented the whole realm 239.
  • Open settlement: Powerful outsiders could enter, establish themselves, and found Dao lineages; the realm also imposed no general prohibition on leaving 239.
  • Rivalries: Disputes over resources and opportunities frequently led to conflict between disciples, factions, and sometimes Supremes themselves 240 354.
  • Supreme population: Daoist Bailou initially reported 103 Supremes. This was not a permanent total: Lin Yunji later returned more than four hundred Supremes to their homes in the Source Realm 239 387.

Supreme Hall

  • Trials and rankings: Challengers were ranked by the number of imprints they defeated. Primordial Expanse Supreme Treasures were forbidden in the test 328.
  • Ancient Realm access: Passing the trial granted an opportunity to enter the Ancient Realm; successful Supremes could bring companions 287.
  • Limits of the rankings: Not every formidable expert appeared on the list. Ice-Cold Supreme Venerable had never taken the trial 314.
  • True nature: Although initially described as a special Primordial Expanse Supreme Treasure, the Hall was later identified as one of the ten Primordial Expanse Great Artifacts, born from the fundamental Great Dao of strength 287 391.

Rebuilt Realm

  • Great Emperor Venerable: Lin Yunji’s office stood above Supremes and star lords, with responsibility for protecting the Heart and preventing another Great Tribulation 417.
  • Regional administration: Lords of the Astral Realm managed their own domains; Lin Yunji did not personally handle ordinary governance throughout the realm 418.
  • Heavenly Emperor Great Domain: Lin Yunji established rules binding its inhabitants and entrusted its remaining affairs to Nüwo 428.
  • Continuing factional disputes: A conflict involving Cult Master Tongtian and Supreme Huangque developed into a public confrontation between the Primordial Wilderness Faction and Rogue Cultivator Faction, discussed through the Divine Net 429.

Inhabitants and Daily Life

Population and Cultivation

  • Diverse races: Most inhabitants took humanoid form, which best conformed to the Primordial Expanse Universe’s Great Dao origins 293.
  • Mortal communities: Numerous mortal kingdoms and small worlds existed within the realm. Their residents descended from powerful cultivators and generally knew about Sages, Supremes, and the wider Source Realm 293.
  • Local order: The scattered mortal worlds Lin Yunji visited lacked a Heavenly Dao; managing cultivators maintained their order instead 293.
  • Accessible methods: Cultivation methods were readily available even to mortals, although their quality varied 293.
  • High-level experts: Sages were commonplace, but Great Dao Sages still held considerable status. A Tenth-Stage Hunyuan Great Dao Sage such as Daoist Bailou was regarded as a venerable senior 276 293.
  • Teaching centers: Supreme sanctuaries attracted followers and attached worlds. In the rebuilt realm, powerful experts preached to countless listeners 360 438.
