Background / History

Accession and Transformation of Snezhnaya

Bronya inherited Snezhnaya’s throne five hundred years before meeting Baichen. According to her account, the country was then a barren, bitterly cold land, which she transformed through extensive use of Cryo. That power came at a personal cost: the more she used it, the more her emotions froze 17.

As a child, she heard a prophecy about an outlander capable of changing Teyvat’s fate. She recounts it to Baichen during his first visit and offers to help him become strong enough to control his own destiny 14.

Baichen’s First Visit

Bronya sends La Signora to invite Baichen to Snezhnaya. Ei permits the journey because of a favor she promised the Tsaritsa five hundred years earlier, though she initially limits his absence to two weeks. Bronya personally welcomes him, seats him beside her at a banquet, and grants him basic Cryo affinity 14.

Her hospitality includes unusually personal instruction. She teaches Baichen Cryo shaping, gives him an elemental-control necklace, and opens the royal library—including its forbidden section—to him. Arlecchino states that Baichen is only the second person Bronya has personally taught to control an element; the first was Bronya herself 15.

Her attention becomes increasingly possessive. She keeps Baichen close at a diplomatic banquet, interrupts Ganyu’s attempt to speak with him, and places Cryo marks on his body. She explains that his Electro has allowed her to feel warmth again after centuries of emotional freezing 16 17.

When informed that Inazuma’s fleet is gathering near Snezhnaya’s border, Bronya orders stronger defenses but forbids provocation. She arranges Baichen’s return the following day, deliberately leaving marks that will last long enough for Ei to discover them 17. Before his departure, she gives him a pendant that allows her to sense his location and condition 18.

Renewed Claim on Baichen

After Baichen returns to Inazuma, Bronya watches him and Ei through a water mirror and decides to bring him “home.” She sends another invitation through La Signora, followed by a letter ordering him to meet her behind the Grand Narukami Shrine at midnight three days later 30 31.

Fearing that refusal could lead to war, Baichen obtains Ei’s permission for a three-day visit. Bronya personally collects him, takes him aboard a warship, and gives him a sedative that forces him to sleep during the voyage. He awakens in her private palace 32 33.

Bronya first proposes that he remain as her personal companion, retaining his Inazuman citizenship and the right to visit Inazuma. When he refuses because of his promise to Ei, she offers to create a twelfth Fatui Harbinger seat for him 34.

During an outing to an ice-sculpture exhibition, she provides warm clothing, dances with him, and presents Snezhnaya’s cultural attractions as reasons to stay. Although she promises to respect his eventual decision, she later threatens imprisonment and questions whether he will return safely if he refuses her offer 35 36.

Release and Harbor Confrontation

After Baichen rejects her advances, Bronya restrains him. Ei’s confiscated Electro-Patterned Magatama activates, destroys Bronya’s ice spike, and shields him. Ei’s voice warns Bronya that she has crossed the line, prompting her to release Baichen and promise his return at noon 36.

At the harbor, Dottore attempts to take Baichen to a laboratory. Ei intervenes, while Bronya surrounds Dottore with icicles and orders him to leave Baichen alone. She promises consequences for his overreach and provides a ship to Inazuma 37.

Before Baichen leaves with Ei, Bronya gives him a sealed ice-crystal casket and reiterates that Snezhnaya remains open to him. The casket later reveals a Cryo-resistant earring that completes a set with Ei’s Thunder Sakura earring 37.

Bronya initially presents herself as an attentive host and a patient, meticulous teacher. She personally demonstrates techniques, praises Baichen’s progress, serves him food, and remembers his preferred dishes. Her private enjoyment of dancing and the search for a heart-shaped ice crystal contrasts with her formal imperial bearing 15 16 35.

Her tenderness is inseparable from possessiveness. She treats Ei as a rival, disparages Electro as crude, and deliberately leaves Cryo marks to provoke her. Although she once says she wants Baichen to choose her willingly, she later uses sedation, confiscation, threats, and physical restraint to control him 15 16 17 33 34 36.

As a ruler, Bronya can set aside personal frustration to address military threats. She orders defensive preparations without authorizing provocation and immediately summons the Harbingers after receiving an urgent northern-border report. Her willingness to release Baichen does not end her attachment: she continues to offer him a place in Snezhnaya 17 36 37.
