Background / History

Early Life and Ascension

According to Makoto, Ei was stubborn and outwardly tough as a child, but emotionally sensitive. She endured injuries during sword practice without crying, yet could be moved to tears by her sister’s criticism. Makoto also recalls her falling asleep over books and repeatedly bruising herself at the old training ground 41.

Five hundred years before Baichen’s arrival, the Tsaritsa helped Ei establish Inazuma. In return, Ei promised to fulfill one future request. Ei also recounts slaying a giant serpent to protect Inazuma’s eternity. Following Makoto’s death in Khaenri’ah, she succeeded her sister as Electro Archon 5 14 40.

Taking Baichen into Tenshukaku

Ei discovers Baichen injured beside a stream and becomes interested in his lack of a Vision or detectable elemental power. Rather than carry out her stated punishment for trespassing, she transports him to Tenshukaku, treats his ankle, and keeps him under supervision. She gives him an Electro Sigil permitting movement within the palace and later accepts dango from him 1.

During negotiations with Kokomi, Ei initially refuses to reconsider the Vision Hunt Decree. Baichen argues that confiscating healing Visions would increase casualties and undermine stability; Ei accepts a limited exemption for registered healing Visions on Watatsumi Island. She subsequently takes him to Tatarasuna to observe his battlefield reactions, where he helps her escape a falling boulder during a Tatarigami explosion 2 3.

Rescue from Ayaka and Apprenticeship

After Ayaka confines Baichen in a secluded residence, Ei breaks in and frees him. She orders Ayaka confined for three months, has physicians examine Baichen, and moves him into the room beside hers. She also permits him to address her as “Ei” in private and begins preparing him to assist with government work 9.

Ei personally supervises his sword training, teaches him to review official reports, and arranges archery lessons with Kujou Sara. Although angered by his unauthorized meeting with Kokomi, she investigates the Fatui intelligence he brings back and confirms that it is largely accurate. She considers Watatsumi’s trade proposal while choosing someone other than Baichen for the proposed peace-envoy role 10 13.

Conflict with Snezhnaya and Liyue

The Tsaritsa invokes Ei’s old promise to obtain a two-week visit from Baichen. Torn between protecting him and avoiding war, Ei reluctantly allows the journey and sends him with an Electro Archon’s Talisman. She later promises to come to Snezhnaya, prepares a spatial jump, and cancels it for an unexplained reason; instead, she meets his returning escort with a twelve-warship fleet 14 16 17 18.

Ei’s anger over Bronya’s elemental marks gives way to concern when Baichen explains that he could not resist her. She examines the marks, provides ointment, and acknowledges that sending him alone was her mistake 18 19.

For his subsequent Liyue visit, Ei requires guards, daily talisman reports, and a maximum stay of two weeks. When Ningguang later attempts to take Baichen from Ganyu in Jueyun Karst, Ei intervenes, accuses Liyue of violating diplomatic protocol, and brings him home. At Tenshukaku, she treats his injuries and destroys his Liyue belongings 20 28.

When Bronya’s later demands raise the possibility of war, Ei permits another visit lasting no more than three days. She supplies additional protections, including her lightning-patterned magatama. After that talisman shields Baichen from Bronya, Ei personally reaches Snezhnaya’s harbor and attacks Dottore when he tries to abduct him, then escorts Baichen back to Inazuma 32 36 37.

Makoto’s Return and Later Travels

Baichen secretly works with Yae Miko to resurrect Makoto. Ei is stunned when her sister appears in the courtyard, dropping her naginata at the sight of her. Makoto rejoins life at Tenshukaku, where the sisters alternate between affectionate teasing and competition for Baichen’s attention 39 40 41.

Makoto organizes Ei’s birthday feast with Baichen and the palace staff. Ei spends the afternoon teaching him sword techniques, gives him a protective jade pendant, and joins the evening banquet. The household later attends the Thunder Sakura Festival warm-up together 42 44.

After Baichen secretly leaves for Liyue with Lumine, Ei follows in ordinary clothing, intending to protect him from the shadows. She subsequently joins him in Liyue. Following Zhongli’s remarks about eternity and choice, Ei tells Baichen that he is free to choose; his decision to remain with her prompts an Eternal Oath 48 49 50.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Waist-length purple hair and amethyst-purple eyes 1.
  • Usual clothing: A purple kimono embroidered with the Electro Mitsudomoe, gloves, and wooden sandals 1.
  • Training attire: A dark-purple kendo outfit or close-fitting black training clothes, with her hair tied into a high ponytail 10 11.
  • Informal clothing: Simpler purple kimono and yukata; in Liyue, she wears ordinary local clothing while traveling discreetly 19 32 49.
  • Resemblance to Makoto: The sisters have closely similar faces, though Makoto’s features are described as softer 40.

Personality

Ei initially presents herself as cold, commanding, and intolerant of disobedience. She restricts Baichen’s movements and expects immediate compliance, but also values honesty and conviction: after he challenges her position on healing Visions, she praises his willingness to defend his own judgment 1 2.

Her approach to government is more pragmatic than absolute. She knowingly tolerates a corrupt Seirai Island official because the official’s family controls necessary sea routes. Ei describes eternity as a “dynamic balance,” rather than simple resistance to change 10.

With Baichen, her care is practical and increasingly indulgent: she treats injuries, remembers his preferred foods, comforts him after frightening experiences, and adjusts plans for his sake. This tenderness coexists with jealousy and controlling behavior, including inspecting gifts, restricting meetings, and destroying belongings associated with rivals 10 11 28 37 41 44.

Ei admits that eternity is lonely and that Baichen reminds her of something she had forgotten. Makoto’s return exposes a more easily embarrassed side, especially when her sister shares childhood memories. By the later Liyue visit, Ei explicitly offers Baichen a choice rather than relying solely on her authority to keep him close 5 41 42 50.
