Background / History

The Dugu Family’s Poison

The Dugu Family inherited the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Martial Soul together with a hereditary poison backlash. Its toxins accumulated in the bearer’s bones and blood as cultivation increased. Most family members failed to live beyond sixty, while branch relatives eventually died or scattered, leaving only Dugu Bo and his granddaughter, Dugu Yan 82.

Dugu Bo’s first major outbreak occurred at thirty-five. His pregnant wife was affected by the poison and died from its backlash while giving birth to their son. Dugu Bo raised the boy alone. His son later inherited the same Martial Soul and suffered an outbreak upon becoming a Soul King at forty 82.

Seeking a way to protect Dugu Yan, his son and daughter-in-law entered the Star Dou Great Forest to find Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma. Neither returned after encountering a Soul Beast tide. Dugu Bo subsequently devoted himself to keeping his granddaughter’s inherited poison suppressed, knowing that it would fully erupt when she reached the Soul King realm 82 83.

Search for a Breakthrough

At level eighty-nine, Dugu Bo’s corroded meridians and worsening poison backlash prevented him from safely advancing. He left the Heaven Dou Empire to search for rare herbs or a stronger poison that could counter his own 137.

Reports of lethal miasma brought him to the Hidden Bone Mountain Range in the southern Star Luo Empire. There, he encountered the Nether Blood Moon Clan and discovered that even its lower-ranked members could withstand his poison. Their leader, Ye Mingshang, immediately recognized his concealed poison affliction 137 138.

Dugu Bo stayed in Sinking Moon Valley, using its poisonous atmosphere to temper his venom. He witnessed the clan’s full-moon frenzy and studied both Moon-Eroding Nether Poison and the formula of its Nether Pill. He concluded that the poison had fused with the clan’s bloodline too deeply for ordinary antidotes or forcible expulsion 138.

After reaching Titled Douluo, Dugu Bo refused to join Spirit Hall. Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo ambushed and severely injured him. Prince Xue Xing saved his life, creating the debt behind Dugu Bo’s later service as the prince’s guest elder 136.

Meeting Lin Chen

Dugu Bo first confronted Lin Chen during a poison lecture at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, acting on Dugu Yan’s complaint that Lin Chen had bullied her. He tested Lin Chen with Jade Phosphor Cold Mist at thirty percent strength, then escalated to forty percent. Lin Chen’s poison-blocking shield and spatial movement changed his assessment of the boy 32 33.

After acknowledging Lin Chen’s abilities, Dugu Bo compensated him with three jade boxes containing rare herbs. These included Ice Fire Grass and two Eight-Petal Immortal Orchids 34.

When Dugu Yan reached level thirty, Dugu Bo took her to hunt a three-thousand-year Jade Scale Illusion Serpent. He allowed Lin Chen and Xiao Wu to accompany them, then made the three juniors conduct the hunt themselves. Impressed by Lin Chen’s command of the battle, he permitted him to seek an opportunity beyond his poison array while he guarded Dugu Yan’s Soul Ring absorption 74 75 76 77.

Treatment and Discipleship

After Lin Chen sacrificed two Soul Rings to save Xiao Wu, Dugu Bo found him unconscious and supplied Soul Gathering Pills. Lin Chen later proposed storing the Dugu Family’s poison inside a Soul Bone, using Chaos Soul Power, Immortal Herbs, and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to guide and refine it 82 83.

Dugu Bo accepted the proposed sixty-percent chance of success. He opened his herb garden and the well to Lin Chen, arranged extended leave from the academy, and supported his recovery with food, shelter, and protection. He initially described Lin Chen as a nominal disciple to keep their activities private 84 85.

During Lin Chen’s recovery, Dugu Bo helped subdue a Prison-Suppressing Demon Spider and accompanied him to hunt a fifty-thousand-year Void Beast King. He stood guard during the dangerous Soul Ring absorption and returned with him to begin treatment 86 91 92 93.

After discovering Lin Chen’s Twin Martial Souls, Dugu Bo offered to keep the secret—even from Dugu Yan—on the condition that Lin Chen become his sole personal disciple. He promised to teach him poison arts, pharmacology, and poison formations. By the end of the treatment, Dugu Bo’s affliction was resolved; he then hurried to treat Dugu Yan with medicinal powder prepared by Lin Chen 99 105. Her treatment was subsequently shown to succeed 110.

Imperial Affairs and the Journey South

Prince Xue Xing later asked Dugu Bo to investigate Emperor Xue Ye’s illness. After more than two weeks in the palace, he found only a faint possible trace of poison. He refused Lin Chen’s offer to assist, warning him that imperial interests made the investigation too dangerous 136.

Dugu Bo also directed Lin Chen to research Moon-Eroding Nether Poison and the Blood Moon Devil Lotus before offering him an opportunity involving Sinking Moon Valley. He eventually set out for the Star Luo Empire with Lin Chen, Xiao Wu, and Dugu Yan, disguising himself as their carriage driver and choosing routes that avoided Spirit Hall surveillance 114 139 142.

On the journey, he warned that rescuing Chunya and her grandfather would leave them exposed to retaliation from the Ma family. He helped them escape Suotuo City, then used medicine to incapacitate their pursuers. The party continued overnight to Dexius Town 150 152.

Appearance

Dugu Bo’s appearance changes markedly after his accumulated poison is sealed into the Medusa Head Soul Bone 99 104.

Feature Before Treatment After Treatment
Build and bearing Tall and thin, with a gaunt, withered appearance and an openly venomous presence 32 74 Straight-backed and vigorous, with a restrained, weighty presence 99 104
Hair Green or blue-green 82 99 Deep gray-black, retaining only faint green tips 99
Eyes Eerie green, with vertical serpent pupils 74 82 Normally dark brown; green slit pupils return when he activates his Martial Soul 99
Face Gaunt and yellowed, with pronounced signs of poison backlash 32 74 Smoother and more than ten years younger-looking 99 104
  • Clothing: Usually wears dark green robes; also uses a dark green cloak 32 84.
  • Voice: Low, hoarse, and chilling, compared to sandpaper scraping dead wood 32 74.
  • Martial Soul manifestation: A spectral Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor appears around or behind him 86 99.

Personality

Dugu Bo is proud, intimidating, and fiercely protective of those he considers his own. His first confrontation with Lin Chen is prompted by Dugu Yan’s grievance, and he later warns both academy officials and Prince Xue Beng against mistreating his disciple 32 104 113.

His harsh language often conceals practical care. While complaining about the inconvenience of Lin Chen’s recovery, he brings nourishing meals, builds a shelter, and guards the valley. As a teacher, he favors real combat over comfortable instruction, but remains ready to intervene when a student faces genuine danger 75 85 86 92.

Repeated family losses made him lonely and skeptical of affection untainted by self-interest. Lin Chen’s sacrifice for Xiao Wu challenges that cynicism. He is also ruthless toward predatory Soul Masters, teaching that hesitation can endanger both oneself and the people one wishes to protect 82 90.

His independence extends to politics. Although grateful to Prince Xue Xing, he recognizes the limits of royal trust and deliberately maintains the distance of a guest elder rather than becoming deeply entangled in imperial struggles 136.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

Dugu Bo’s inherited Martial Soul supplies his signature venom and serpent-based techniques 82.

  • Jade Phosphor Seven Absolutes Poison: Few Soul Masters below Soul Douluo rank survive its release 32.
  • Jade Phosphor Cold Mist: Causes numbness on contact; used to test Lin Chen’s poison resistance 32.
  • Jade Phosphorous Poison Mist: Envelops enemies in venom, including the Void Beast King 91.
  • Innate poison needles: Delivers extremely fast, concentrated attacks. One pierced the Void Beast King’s exposed spatial core 90 91.
  • Poison palm strike: Cracked the Prison-Suppressing Demon Spider’s carapace and suppressed it by sending poison into its meridians 86.
  • Limitation: His poison is not universally effective. Lin Chen’s Chaos Shield blocks it, while the Nether Blood Moon Clan displays exceptional resistance 32 33 137.

Poison Formations and Serpent Vines

Dugu Bo uses poison and Soul Power to control terrain, restrict movement, and construct barriers 76 85 103.

  • Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Poison Array: A layered miasma barrier near the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. It corrodes flesh, bone, and rock; Dugu Bo states that even an ordinary Soul Douluo would suffer severely inside it 76 77.
  • Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Formation: Creates a closing net of dark green serpent vines, used to trap the Shattered Mirror Evil Spirit 103.
  • Jade Phosphorous Serpent Vine: Can pull a burrowing Soul Beast from underground or form the frame of a temporary shelter 85 86.

Medusa’s Gaze

The Medusa Head Soul Bone grants Dugu Bo a concentrated petrifying beam 103.

  • Struck and temporarily petrified the Shattered Mirror Evil Spirit when coordinated with Lin Chen’s tracking 103.
  • The Soul Bone also possesses poison attributes and a mental-shock effect 93.
  • Its internal cavity serves as the storage vessel for his sealed toxins 94.

Pharmacology and Toxicology

Dugu Bo has spent his life studying poison and maintains an extensive medicinal garden 32 74.

  • Identifies poisonous plants and teaches their practical dangers in the field 75.
  • Uses medicines to suppress hereditary poison and support recovery 83 85 97.
  • Incapacitates pursuing soldiers and officials with medicine placed along the road 152.
  • Studies unfamiliar bloodline poisons and analyzes medicinal formulas, including the Nether Pill 138.
  • Limits: He could not independently cure his family’s poison, determine the source of Emperor Xue Ye’s illness, or fully explain the rare Void Divine Eye 83 93 136.

Mobility and Perception

Dugu Bo combines exceptional movement speed with the heightened senses of a Titled Douluo 32 33.

  • Moves too quickly for the academy audience to follow and travels through the air with serpent shadows surrounding him 33 75.
  • Uses his poisonous presence to drive nearby Soul Beasts away while guarding or traveling 92 93.
  • Limitation: The Shattered Mirror Evil Spirit’s domain reflects his probing Soul Power and prevents his divine sense from extending outward 101.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Medusa Head Soul Bone — A ten-thousand-year Soul Bone obtained during an earlier hunt in the Star Dou Great Forest. Originally reserved for Dugu Yan, it becomes his poison-storage vessel and grants Medusa’s Gaze 93 94 103.
  • Wishful Hundred Treasure Purse — Carries supplies, including the oilcloth and rope used to build Lin Chen’s shelter 85.
  • Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and medicinal garden — A site he guarded for decades, both for its rare herbs and its ability to balance his internal toxins. He later grants Lin Chen unrestricted access 74 84.
  • Aromatic Silk Beauty — Supplies medicinal power to neutralize poisons and stabilize the spirit during treatment. One mature plant is sufficient for the course Lin Chen proposes 93 94.

  • Prince Xue Xing — Benefactor who saved his life from Spirit Hall’s pursuit. Dugu Bo repays the debt as a guest elder while keeping his distance from imperial politics 136.
  • Ye Mingshang — Leader of the Nether Blood Moon Clan whom he met during his search for a poison remedy. Dugu Bo later takes Lin Chen toward Sinking Moon Valley to meet him 138 139.
  • Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo — Spirit Hall attackers who nearly killed him shortly after he reached Titled Douluo 136.
  • Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s education committee — Officials who defer to his authority. He arranges Lin Chen and Xiao Wu’s leave and explicitly orders the committee to protect his disciple’s interests 84 104.
