Yan is loud, boisterous, and openly enthusiastic about fighting. He shouts encouragement during sparring, reacts dramatically to Ning Buhui’s breakthroughs, and remains as competitive over meat in the dining hall as he is on the training ground 24 26 58 84.

His teasing conceals genuine concern for his friends. He considers interrupting Ning Buhui’s five-day seclusion to check on him and later confronts a Soul Master spreading speculation about Ning Buhui’s possible death 26 71. After learning that Ning Buhui exposed his hidden abilities to save the group, Yan explicitly acknowledges the life debt and offers his help in return 63.

Although prone to charging ahead, Yan accepts criticism. After the wolf mission, he admits that placing his Fire Wall too far forward left him unable to protect his teammates 39. He also recognizes skill in others: while watching the academy selection, he praises timely rescues and tactical battlefield division, and identifies why binding an opponent’s feet would be safer than binding a hand 86 88 93.

Meeting and Training with Ning Buhui

The combination of attribute enhancement, precisely placed vine armor, and tactical advice lets Yan fight far more aggressively, prompting him to request the same support in future spars 24.

Mist Swamp Forest Mission

Yan initially proposes hunting an eight-thousand-year Vigorous Vajra Ape, but the group instead selects a B-rank mission targeting Mist-Hidden Shadow Wolves 35. He uses Fire Wall and his lava techniques against the younger wolves and helps prepare the lead wolf’s remains afterward 38.

On the return journey, Yan breaks the group’s silence by admitting how close the mission came to disaster. He acknowledges his positioning error during the fight, helping turn the journey into a team-wide review of their mistakes 39.

Jasper Flood Dragon Ambush

During the A-rank hunt in Jade Pool Hidden Valley, Yan helps attack the twenty-thousand-year Jasper Flood Dragon, only for a stronger female to emerge and trap the group between them 58 60 61. Venom injures his leg and shoulder, leaving him increasingly dependent on his teammates’ protection 61.

Ning Buhui reveals his concealed control abilities to reverse the battle. Yan joins Hu Liena and Ning Buhui in killing the male dragon, then questions the unexpected skills after the fighting ends 62. Once Ning Buhui explains his dual support-and-control Martial Soul, Yan acknowledges that his intervention saved their lives 63.

The encounter changes Yan’s tournament plans. Although he had intended to compete, he decides to wait for the next tournament and improve through further practical experience 64.

Ning Buhui’s Disappearance and Return

When Ning Buhui fails to return from the Star Dou Great Forest, Yan angrily confronts a gossiping Soul Master and seeks news from Hu Liena 71. He is still training with Xie Yue late at night when Ning Buhui finally returns, greeting him with a heavy slap on the shoulder and an outburst of relief 75.

Spirit Hall Team Formation

After years of shared missions, Yan reaches level 54 and becomes one of the Spirit Hall Team’s seven main members 84 94. When the newly selected fighters question the preselected members’ right to lead, he partners with Ning Buhui in a two-against-five demonstration 94.

With Ning Buhui’s four enhancements active, Yan blocks the opening attacks and defeats all five opponents with Lie Yan Torrent in fewer than ten breaths. The result settles the leadership dispute, and the group accepts Ning Buhui as captain before beginning team training 95.
