Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sixth Soul Ring manifestation | 62 | Becomes larger and more tangible. Can leave Long Tian’s palm, adjust its course, and respond to his thoughts through the Origin Return Pearl. |
| Two-headed form | 63 | A two-headed dragon appears during the confrontation with Meng Changyuan. Yu Jin’s Power of Origin also helps scattered dragon-shadow fragments reassemble into a thicker manifestation. |
| Improved persistence and independent action | 64 | Holds its form without active control for nearly half the time needed to drink a cup of tea. Can operate alongside other Soul Skills and maintain its form through a breath attack. |
| New-core reinforcement | 65 | Gains a deep gray sheen and fine ridges along both necks. Manifestation time increases to nearly a quarter of an hour. |
| Spontaneous manifestation | 71 | Appears without being summoned during the seventh circuit of Long Tian’s training; its scale edges brighten through the twelfth circuit. |
| Body-following form | 72 | Begins following Long Tian throughout the day and becomes fully solid behind his back. At this stage, it still disperses when he enters the house. |
| Synchronized and directed attacks | 73 | Mirrors physical strikes, combines its force with Long Tian’s attacks, and travels to a target ten zhang away before returning on its own. |
| Winged, detached hovering form | 74 | Opens its wings for the first time and separates from Long Tian’s back to hover independently, still sustained by the Origin Return Pearl and new core. |
| Forehead eye opens | 75 | Opens its vertical eye in the Iron Guard basement, briefly dimming the room’s Soul Power formations and slowing Meng Changyuan’s Soul Rings. |
| Persistent complete form | 77 | No longer requires deliberate maintenance. Remains outside the stone house above its doorway after Long Tian goes indoors. |
| High-altitude and cloud-reaching display | 79 | Hovers roughly ten zhang above the mountains. At the Soul Master General Assessment, light from its partly opened forehead eye pierces the clouds. |
| Enhanced joint resonance | 120 | Combined output with Yu Jin’s dark gray bead produces a faster, steadier response from its forehead marking than Long Tian’s earlier solo test. |
| Light-core integration | 145 146 | Draws a light core through its forehead opening into its chest. A new light layer spreads along its spine, its scale edges gain a fresh sheen, and its illumination becomes steadier. |
| Self-sustaining light-core circulation | 147 | After three days of practice, the embedded core circulates without additional guidance and synchronizes with Yu Jin’s orb. |
| Seventh Soul Ring transformation | 151 | The light core connects fully to the spinal pathway. Its wings spread nearly twice as wide as before, gain dark gray-and-gold trim, and move without any delay relative to Long Tian. |
Background / History
Sixth-Ring Testing and the Iron Guard
Long Tian identifies the Dragon Shadow as an expression of his Sixth Soul Ring’s fused state rather than a separate attack technique. During testing, Yu Jin observes that its casual rock-splitting strike is approximately twenty percent stronger than his own Fourth Ring at full power 62.
Against Meng Changyuan, the Dragon Shadow corrects its course after striking a purple Soul Power ripple and attacks from the side. When the collision with Meng Changyuan’s bracer breaks it into light fragments, Yu Jin supplies Power of Origin to help it reassemble. The encounter also marks the emergence of Long Tian’s two-headed dragon form 63.
Long Tian later enters Spirit City openly with the Dragon Shadow accompanying him. Its presence suppresses Iron Guard members’ Soul Power, and its forehead eye opens before Meng Changyuan. News of the complete manifestation spreads through the city, draws Spirit Hall’s presiding judge to the mountain house, and precedes Long Tian’s invitation to the Soul Master General Assessment 75 78 79.
Ancient Ruins and the Sea Route
The Dragon Shadow becomes a recurring means of investigating ancient structures. It activates a carved dragon pattern in a sea cave, opens access through a mountain fissure, and aligns with a dragon-head relief to reveal a descending shaft 82 88. Its directional responses subsequently help guide the boat through currents and toward submerged ruins 94 95 109.
While examining a structure beneath the sea, its scanning light reveals a ridge-and-rib arrangement identical in angles and spacing to its own body. Long Tian later learns from Tang San that the associated dragon-bone marker disc requires resonance with a Martial Soul of the same origin 117 119. Further exploration links the Dragon Shadow to concealed passages, a coiled-dragon wall pattern, and a projection bearing the same vertical mark as its forehead 125 135.
Light Core and Inland Withdrawal
In a hidden underwater cavity, the Dragon Shadow draws a fist-sized light core into its chest. The integration also stabilizes a transition layer within Long Tian’s Origin Return Pearl 145. After its circulation becomes self-sustaining, Spirit Hall’s coastal observation posts prompt Long Tian to suspend sea operations and move inland. His subsequent seventh-ring breakthrough transforms the Dragon Shadow alongside him 147 151.
Appearance
- Body: A gray-gold dragon-shaped manifestation with clearly defined scales, curved horns, a spinal ridge, claws, and a tail 62 73.
- Heads: Its developed form has a golden head on the left and a dark head on the right, with four ordinary eyes between them 64 71.
- Forehead eye: A narrow vertical slit opens into an eye with a deep gray-gold pupil. The text calls it the “third eye” despite the four eyes on its two heads 74 75.
- Wings: Gray-gold membranes with serrated, scaled edges; their first revealed span is nearly twice that of Long Tian’s Yin-Yang Twin Wings 74.
- Light-core changes: Integration adds a luminous spinal layer and a new sheen along the scales. The seventh ring extends even light from forehead to tail and adds dark gray-and-gold wing trim 145 151.
- Residual traces: Its movements can leave fine gray-gold powder or glowing dust on doorframes, roads, and the ground 71 75 77.
Abilities & Skills
Independent Movement and Mental Control
The Dragon Shadow remains linked to Long Tian even when separated from his body 62 74.
- Accepts mental instructions to turn, circle, dive, and change its attack angle 62.
- Adjusts its path without continuous direction and automatically reduces its force during its first sparring test with Yu Jin 62.
- Initially has an effective remote-control range of about twelve zhang: the connection is clear within ten, blurs at fifteen, and fails at twenty, causing dispersal. These measurements belong to its sixth-ring testing stage 62.
- Can operate while Long Tian uses other Soul Skills, including his light projectile and protective membrane 64.
- Automatically folds or adjusts its wings around branches, doorways, airflow, and underwater resistance 75 77 80 95.
Claw, Tail, and Combined Attacks
Its attacks can function independently or reinforce Long Tian’s movements 62 73.
- Splits a washbasin-sized rock with smooth fracture surfaces during sixth-ring testing 62.
- Performs flanking attacks while Long Tian advances from the front, then circles behind the opponent without dispersing 62.
- Mirrors punches with claw strikes and a side kick with a tail sweep. In an early test, its right claw moves thirty percent faster than Long Tian’s hand 73.
- Produces narrow gray rifts that remain briefly before closing, and releases a gray-gold claw arc that finds its own path to a tree 73.
- Combines its claw force with Long Tian’s palm wind into an overlapping light column, leaving a shallow crater in a rock wall ten zhang away 73.
- Can release a low-powered breath attack while maintaining its form 64.
Automatic Defense
The Dragon Shadow can intercept an incoming attack without Long Tian physically dodging or blocking 74.
- Creates a gray-gold light wall that redirects Yu Jin’s full four-ring attack rather than meeting it with an explosion 74.
- Deflects the entire attack without allowing residual force to reach Long Tian 74.
- The successful test consumes less than thirty percent of the Origin Return Pearl and new core’s full-strength expenditure 74.
Forehead Eye and Soul Power Suppression
Its gaze and forehead eye can interfere with surrounding Soul Power 75 79.
- Turning its heads toward three Iron Guard members briefly suppresses their Soul Power circulation; afterward, their Soul Rings rotate roughly one-tenth more slowly 75.
- Opening the vertical eye momentarily dims the basement’s Soul Power formations and slows Meng Changyuan’s purple Soul Rings 75.
- A narrow opening of the eye sends light through the clouds and forms a circular gray-gold halo beneath them during the public assessment 79.
Illumination, Scanning, and Navigation
Its forehead light serves as both a lamp and a means of investigating its surroundings 95 117.
- Illuminates an underwater field about one zhang across while folded against Long Tian’s spine 95.
- Spreads over a larger area underwater because of light scattering, explicitly not because its output has become stronger 96.
- Extends probing light through the water and relays submerged structural outlines into Long Tian’s vision 117.
- Indicates underwater upwellings, lateral currents, course changes, and a faint whirlpool concealing a stone marker 94 95 109 139.
- Can be compressed flat against Long Tian’s back, reducing its visible presence to a faint undertone along his spine 92.
Resonance and Ancient Mechanisms
The Dragon Shadow’s light responds to compatible markings and can transmit a response back to Long Tian 88 120.
- Activates carved dragon patterns and connects its forehead light to a fissure that opens into a mountain passage 82 88.
- Directs and rotates light against a circular outline to open a passage above the Qi chamber 125.
- Receives a resonance response before the Origin Return Pearl and new core vibrate, making the connection demonstrably two-way 120.
- Responds more quickly and steadily when its output converges with that of Yu Jin’s dark gray bead 120.
- Approaches a coiled-dragon wall pattern as light gathers at the carving’s mouth and emerges as a disc-shaped projection marked like its forehead 135.
Equipment / Items
- Embedded light core — Enters through the forehead opening and settles in the Dragon Shadow’s chest. It stabilizes illumination, develops self-sustaining circulation, and becomes fully connected to the spinal pathway after Long Tian’s seventh ring forms 145 146 147 151.
- Origin Return Pearl and new core — External sustaining structures within Long Tian, rather than carried equipment; they maintain the detached manifestation and its connection to him 74.
Relationships
- Long Tian — Source and controller. The Dragon Shadow functions as an extension of his Martial Soul, follows his movements, and eventually remains manifested without deliberate maintenance 62 77 151.
- Yu Jin — Sparring partner and compatible resonance partner. His Power of Origin helps reassemble the shattered manifestation, while his dark gray bead strengthens its resonance response 63 74 120.
- Long Tieshan — Observes its development and identifies the point at which it can remain with Long Tian without being actively sustained 72 77.
Notable Quotes
“The sixth ring's Soul Skill isn't a separate move. It treats the state itself, after light and darkness have fused, as the Soul Skill.”
— Long Tian 62
“It'll keep existing without you having to maintain it. Like your shadow, only with color and shape that a shadow doesn't have.”
— Long Tieshan 77
