Power Progression
The following records Baishi’s documented aura development; the numerical values belong to his Talisman Wheel status panel, not a universal ranking system.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Forced awakening | 2 | Slotting Needle-Person Control opens his Aura Nodes and releases an uncontrolled surge of black-purple aura. |
| Initial Ten | 3 | Merges his will with escaping life energy, progressively bringing it under control and retaining it around his body. |
| Initial measured Aura: 5–100 | 4 | Discovers the Aura range on his status panel. |
| Expanded channels through Dynamic Copy | 14 | Forming the blue talent Talisman consumes slightly over one-third of his potential aura and forcibly widens his channels, increasing possible output. |
| Improved control and efficiency | 16 | Aura-shaping precision has approximately doubled. The evolved wheel consumes half as much aura when changing size. |
| Initial Zetsu | 17 | Learns to perceive and close most Aura Nodes, suppressing leakage and his detectable presence. |
| Further expansion and finer node control | 26 | Scarlet Eyes’ formation violently expands his channels. Afterward, he can instinctively control individual nodes and observes increases in Spirit and Aura, though their exact cause remains unclear. |
| Aura rises from 150 to 200–300 | 30 | After obtaining Bungee Gum, attributes fifty additional points of potential aura to channel expansion and another hundred to an Aura ×1 bonus. |
| Aura reaches 330~700, with 250/700 recovered | 49 | Creating the golden 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva Talisman drains his initial 330 points, repeatedly draws on replenished life energy, and raises capacity to 700. |
Nature and Circulation
- Formation: Aura becomes controllable when a person merges willpower with life energy. Baishi first accomplishes this in small areas before extending control across his body 2 3.
- Natural leakage: People who have not learned Nen continuously lose life energy without consciously controlling it 9.
- Visibility: Ordinary people cannot see aura. Baishi explains that opening their Aura Nodes and mastering aura allows them to perceive it; Gon can sense its presence before awakening 9.
- Aura Nodes: Countless tiny nodes cover the skin and serve as points through which aura flows in and out 17.
- Aura channels: A branching internal network connects nodes with tissues including blood vessels, organs, muscles, and bones. Individual channels can connect to multiple nodes 17.
- Dynamic circulation: Ten is not a stationary shell. Its protective layer circulates continuously with the aura inside the body 16.
Reserves and Output
| Term | Meaning in Baishi’s observations |
|---|---|
| Potential aura | The internal supply consumed when forming Talismans or using techniques 14 |
| Manifest aura | Aura released for use; wider channels and nodes allow more to emerge at once 14 |
| Aura capacity | The amount his expanded channels can accommodate; golden-grade Advent Emulation raises the recorded capacity to 700 49 |
- Baishi initially cannot determine exactly how the panel calculates Aura or why its scale differs so sharply from his physical and mental attributes 5.
- His conclusion that Aura ×1 normally adds one hundred points comes from comparing his own recorded changes 30.
Awakening
| Method | Process | Conditions and Risks |
|---|---|---|
| Innate awakening | Rare individuals are born with awakened Nen, sometimes without understanding their power 11. | Baishi associates such people with accounts of geniuses, psychics, and extraordinary beings 11. |
| Training | An experienced Nen user teaches practices such as meditation, visualization, and extreme physical conditioning 11. | Progress depends on individual aptitude and can require considerable time 11. |
| Forced awakening | A Nen user strikes a non-user with aura, forcibly opening their pathways and nodes 12. | Potentially fatal. Baishi refuses to perform it because his control is insufficient 12. |
| Talisman Wheel awakening | Installing Needle-Person Control forcibly opens Baishi’s nodes and channels 2 14. | Leaves him releasing life energy uncontrollably until he establishes Ten 2 3. |
- According to Baishi, passing the Hunter Exam provides access to veteran Hunters who assess successful applicants and teach orthodox Nen training. Those veterans can also perform forced awakening if an applicant insists 12.
- Nen instruction is treated as a hidden part of becoming a Hunter rather than publicly available exam information 12.
Techniques and Applications
Ten
Ten binds aura within and around the body, preventing uncontrolled loss while maintaining circulation 2 10 16.
- Defense and offense: Passively strengthens the body’s attacking and defensive capabilities 6.
- Long-term conditioning: Continuously nourishes and strengthens the body 3 10.
- Protection from hostile aura: Baishi uses it to dispel the intimidating malice in Menchi’s aura 35.
- Recovery limitation: Restores reserves much more slowly than Zetsu because aura remains committed to circulation, bodily nourishment, and other uses 6.
- Detectability: Baishi’s unstable early Ten makes his recent awakening conspicuous to experienced Nen users 3.
Zetsu
Zetsu closes Aura Nodes to stop aura from escaping 16.
- Recovery: Rapidly restores aura reserves and relieves physical and mental fatigue by retaining and replenishing life energy 14 16.
- Concealment: Weakens the user’s perceptible presence as more nodes close 16.
- Not invisibility: The body remains visible to anyone looking directly at it 16.
- Combat limitation: Nen-based offensive capability falls close to zero while using it 16.
- Wheel interaction: Baishi’s Talisman Wheel vanishes when he shuts off his aura 17.
Shu
Shu extends Ten from the body to objects in contact with it 6.
- Reinforcement: Temporarily improves an object’s toughness, hardness, or sharpness 6.
- Weapon enhancement: Baishi strengthens his cane sword and produces an exceptionally sharp aura at its tip 6.
- Penetration: An aura-coated twig pierces a tree trunk like a needle entering soft material 5.
- Ability delivery: An aura-coated twig can carry Needle-Person Control’s command into a living target 17.
Gyo
Baishi approximates Gyo by concentrating a large amount of aura in his eyes to observe another person’s Nen 45.
- Observation: Uses it during the ball-stealing game to check Netero’s aura use 45.
- Cost: Continuous use consumes enough aura that Baishi generally limits it to intermittent observation 47.
Directed Enhancement
Focused intent can apply a Nen category’s properties without first developing a specialized ability 47.
- Healing: Baishi directs aura toward enhancing cellular activity, causing cuts to close and scab over 47.
- Precision of intent: A vague desire to heal is insufficiently directed; he focuses specifically on cellular repair and proliferation 47.
- Speed limitation: His initial healing is visibly effective but slow 47.
Ren and Hatsu
- Ren: Named among the Four Major Principles. Satotz describes Baishi’s uncontrolled release in the forest as unrestrained Ren 2 43.
- Hatsu: Also named among the Four Major Principles. Baishi’s activated Hatsu Talisman loses its special effects when the wheel disappears 2 5.
Nen Categories
Nen has six categories: Enhancement, Emission, Transmutation, Manipulation, Conjuration, and Specialization. A person’s category reflects aptitude, personality, and upbringing 46.
| Category | Documented Aura Application |
|---|---|
| Enhancement | Strengthening bodily processes, demonstrated through Baishi’s wound healing 47 |
| Emission | Baishi considers using its properties to sustain the Talisman Wheel away from his body; this remains a proposal in that experiment 4 |
| Transmutation | Changes aura’s form and properties while it remains energy; Bungee Gum gives it elasticity and adhesion 29 31 |
| Manipulation | Injects Nen into targets through a suitable medium carrying commands 5 22 |
| Conjuration | Produces manifestations such as Buhara’s internal nutritional storage space and foods recreated through Metabolism Paradise 20 |
| Specialization | Scarlet Eyes forcibly switches the user to this category and unlocks the potential to train and use every Nen type at full efficiency 25 |
- A user’s own category is easier to learn than other categories. For Baishi’s native Transmutation, adjacent Enhancement and Conjuration abilities are limited to eighty percent power even if mastered 46.
- Scarlet Eyes temporarily lifts innate affinity restrictions, but maintaining its state consumes substantial aura and mental energy and leaves severe exhaustion afterward 25.
Interaction with the Talisman Wheel
Fuel and Activation
- Conjuration and operation: Aura summons the wheel, changes its size, activates Talismans, and releases Talismans from storage sockets 4 16.
- Advent Emulation: After Baishi awakens, the wheel switches from extracting life energy directly to drawing Nen Aura as the higher-energy resource for Talisman formation 14.
- Material analysis: The wheel’s Analysis function also consumes aura 37.
- Temporary separation: Wrapping the wheel in aura prevents its immediate disappearance when placed away from Baishi, but does not let him make it fly 4.
Aura Colors and Talisman Effects
| Active Configuration | Observed Aura |
|---|---|
| Without Needle-Person Control’s effect | Transparent or colorless 4 7 |
| Needle-Person Control | Black-purple; also improves aura manipulation 4 16 |
| Bungee Gum combined with other active effects | Transparent, black-purple, and pinkish-purple aura combine into deep purple 30 |
- Nen Ability Talismans appear to boost Baishi’s aura more directly than talent Talismans 16.
- Talisman formation can forcibly widen channels and increase capacity, but higher-grade extraction causes considerable pain and exhaustion 14 26 49.
- When the golden Guanyin Talisman exceeds his available reserves, a hidden restriction forces Zetsu and extracts nutrients in stages, repeatedly converting replenished life energy into aura 49.
Combat Limits
- Defense is not absolute: Baishi’s aura withstands Killua’s unaided Snake Awakens, but Netero later scatters the aura around his arm with a forceful counter. Baishi believes the exposed arm would have broken had he not withdrawn 22 47.
- Range depends on the ability: Baishi’s Bungee Gum snaps beyond ten meters. His initial Guanyin strike reaches only a little over five meters, failing to hit a wall over ten meters away 31 50.
- Manifestations require continuing expenditure: Exhausting his aura causes the Guanyin image to disappear 50.
- Initial Guanyin costs: Baishi estimates roughly one hundred Aura points per minute merely to maintain it, about seven minutes without attacks, or around thirty seconds of continuous full-power attacks. Spending everything in a single burst could exhaust him in under a second 50.
- Will carries psychological risk: Baishi describes Nen as an amplifier of will and warns that mentally immature users may go astray after awakening 24.
