Display Settings opens the same dialog whether you get to it from the reader or from the site header, and every change applies immediately everywhere, with no page reload. Speech settings live in the same dialog but are covered on their own page, Read Aloud.
Opening Display Settings#
Open Display Settings from the reading-settings button in the reader's top bar, or from the settings button in the site header. The dialog has three tabs: Reading, Speech, and Site.
Themes#
The Reading tab offers these presets: Original, Calm, Quiet, Dark, and Black, plus a Custom option.
Creating a custom theme#
- Select the Custom tile.
- Paste a set of CSS color values into the editor, or select Paste from clipboard.
- Select Apply.
The values you can set cover the site's core colors (background, foreground, card, primary, secondary, muted, accent, border, input, ring, popover, destructive), the sidebar's colors, code-block colors, link colors, the glossary suggestion color, and status colors for success, warning, info, and destructive states. Any value outside this set is ignored.
Note Only one custom theme can exist at a time. Applying a new one replaces the one you had.
Fonts, size and spacing#
The Font dropdown offers: Inter, Georgia, Palatino, Times New Roman, Charter, Montserrat, Manrope, Atkinson Hyperlegible, Literata, Merriweather, Lora, and OpenDyslexic.

Hyphenation breaks long words with a hyphen when they don't fit on a line. It's most useful paired with Justify alignment.
Page width#
The width control is contextual: it's labeled Chapter Width while you're reading a chapter, and Site Width everywhere else on the site. Chapter Width only affects the width of the chapter text column; Site Width affects the layout of the rest of the site (browse, novel pages, and so on). Changing one doesn't change the other.
Both use the same +/- stepper, in a 10%–100% range with 5% steps.
Next to the width stepper is a separate Full Width switch, also contextual to whether you're on a chapter page. Turning it on removes the maximum-width cap entirely, regardless of the percentage set. This is useful on very wide screens where even 100% still leaves the text column capped.

Saved in this browser, not your account#
Every setting on this page is saved in your browser, so it doesn't follow you to a different browser or device: set it once on each. Text Size, Underline Links and Reduce Motion apply before the page appears, and your theme and page width are ready on a fresh page too, so nothing flashes or jumps when a page loads. On iPhone and iPad, Safari can drop saved settings after about a week without a visit; an app added to the Home Screen keeps them.
Reset#
Reset (the arrow button, top left of the dialog on phones) puts the Reading and Speech tabs back to their defaults, and the theme goes back to following your device's light or dark setting. The Site tab's settings are kept. If you have a custom theme, Reset asks first, because it deletes it: copy it from the Custom editor before you confirm if you want to keep it.

The list keys work on Browse, Popular, Wikis, the glossaries, Activity, your Library, profiles, a novel's chapter list, chapter summaries and Notifications. After you turn a page with ← or →, the page heading is selected, so pressing ↓ takes you to the first item. The up and down arrows only move between items once you're on one. Anywhere else, they scroll the page as usual. The offline reader has the same chapter keys, except R.
Shortcuts do nothing while you're typing in a text field, while Ctrl, Cmd or Alt is held (so the browser's own shortcuts keep working), and while a dialog or menu is open. When a slider, a set of tabs or anything that scrolls sideways is selected, the arrow keys move that instead.
Screen readers and keyboard navigation#
- Skip to main content: press Tab once on any page to show a link that jumps past the header and sidebar.
- A clear outline shows which item is selected when you move around with the keyboard.
- When you turn a page in a list, screen readers announce the new page ("Page 3 of 70").
- Icon buttons, such as edit, delete, report and clear search, are read out by name.
