Background

Chopper lived on Drum Island under the care of Dr. Kureha and carried on the will of the late Dr. Hiruluk. He dreamed of becoming a panacea capable of saving an entire country, but initially viewed himself as a monster unworthy of joining others. 61

Cifer sought Chopper specifically to serve as the Little Ul's doctor. Although Kureha initially rejected the offer because of Cifer's danger and Chopper's limited combat ability, Cifer promised that his companions would protect Chopper until he could stand on his own and would never abandon him. 61

Before Chopper could leave, Cifer revealed that Wapol and his forces had already been defeated. Chopper confronted and beat Wapol, but his compassion left him unsure how to punish him; Cifer ultimately had Smoker take Wapol to Impel Down. 61 62

After Wapol's capture, Chopper formally joined Cifer, Enel, and Nolan as the ship's doctor. Dr. Kureha saw him off with a package and cherry blossoms over Drum Island. 63

Chopper is a small, furry reindeer with visible antlers, usually appearing under a meter tall in his ordinary form. He can transform into much larger humanoid forms through the Human-Human Fruit. 61 63 259

Personality

Chopper is compassionate, excitable, and easily impressed by powerful people and unfamiliar places. On his first voyage, he eagerly imagined distant islands, dangerous opponents, and the adventure described by Hiruluk. 64

As a doctor and an animal who was once treated as weak, he cannot ignore injured creatures. He intervened to help a wounded white wolf, treated both the wolf and Nico, and later grew close to their animal family. 67 68 70

He remains sensitive to violence and initially struggled with Cifer's harsh judgment of the islanders hunting rare animals. Cifer's explanation that some people cannot be saved helped Chopper accept that his compassion alone could not resolve every situation. 67 68
