Background / History

Recognition of Liuyun’s Talent

Orochimaru first notices Liuyun after secretly watching him defeat several Uchiha children. Later, he questions the boy’s modest Academy results, reasoning that someone capable of fighting seven classmates should not perform below his apparent ability 20 38 39.

His interest intensifies when Liuyun reveals that he is developing a close-range Lightning Release technique. Orochimaru helps him produce a functional Chidori, explains its weaknesses, simplifies its hand seals, and gives him a Communication White Snake for future questions 41 43.

Missions and the Fire–Rain War

Orochimaru takes Liuyun and Nawaki on missions outside Konoha. During a bandit extermination, he orders Liuyun to kill a surviving enemy, praises his ruthlessness, and summons Manda to consume the corpses. On a later A-rank mission, he handles the enemy Jōnin while assigning the fleeing Genin to his students 50 52 72 73.

On the Rain Country battlefield, Orochimaru repeatedly works with Liuyun on assassination and intelligence missions. He holds the best combat record and highest enemy kill count in Konoha’s camp. Alongside Jiraiya and Liuyun, he intercepts Hanzō while Tsunade helps capture Dragon Gate Town, contributing to Konoha’s decisive victory 118 143 154 156.

Ryūchi Cave and Independent Ambitions

Orochimaru and Liuyun travel to Ryūchi Cave to seek Immortal Techniques. Despite being warned that his body lacks sufficient physical strength, Orochimaru accepts the White Snake Sage’s trial without hesitation. The resulting influx of Natural Energy transforms him into a snake, but he survives and begins learning to control the Sage Chakra 186 187 188 190.

After returning to Konoha, he is deployed to the Wind–Fire Battlefield and witnesses Kato Dan’s death. His relationship with Hiruzen later deteriorates over Konoha’s treatment of Liuyun; all three of Hiruzen’s disciples are described as having broken with him over that incident 191 244.

Orochimaru also develops ties with regional rulers independent of Konoha, including a private arrangement with the Land of Sound Daimyo and correspondence with the Land of Rice Fields Daimyo. Liuyun subsequently establishes Otogakure at his request 76 161 234.

Fourth Hokage Candidacy

Orochimaru is nominated for Fourth Hokage alongside Sakumo Hatake and Minato Namikaze. Although already involved in Hidden Sound Village, he is tempted by the authority of a newly centralized Konoha government 303.

Danzo offers research materials and political support in exchange for restoration of his power over Root. Orochimaru refuses, partly because Liuyun despises Danzo. Their confrontation turns violent, and Liuyun intervenes. Danzo then submits evidence of Orochimaru’s kidnappings, abuse of citizens, and human experiments to Hiruzen, who withdraws his support. Sakumo wins the election by a narrow margin 303 304.

Leadership of Hidden Sound Village

Orochimaru builds Hidden Sound Village with followers from Konoha, including several Elite Jōnin. At this stage, neither he nor Liuyun has been formally branded a Konoha rogue ninja. While Liuyun holds the Yamikage position, Orochimaru manages much of the village’s administration and intelligence work 319 336 345 348.

When war breaks out with the Rain Country, Orochimaru agrees to command the Sound army and treats the conflict as practical training for its shinobi. He keeps Liuyun in reserve, fights Itachi to a standstill, and captures six towns. Under his leadership, Hidden Sound defeats Hidden Rain and reduces the Land of Rain to a vassal state, earning recognition as the “Sixth Great Shinobi Village” 366 370 413.

He later refuses special treatment to Tsunade and Jiraiya during their investigation of the God Tree. After they ignore his warnings, he expels them and closes the village to foreign shinobi. His harsh response also protects them from a second, potentially fatal confrontation with Akatsuki 418 420.

World Government and Cultivation

Following the world’s political transformation, Hidden Sound becomes Heavenly Hidden Village. Orochimaru establishes safeguards allowing the village to strip the Emperor Daimyo of authority if his rule causes widespread disorder. He then plans to relinquish the Heavenly Shadow position to concentrate on forbidden techniques and research, considering Nagato as a successor; later chapters identify him as the First Generation Heavenly Shadow 484 504.

As his body ages, Orochimaru grows increasingly interested in Living Corpse Reincarnation, though he has not used it to seize another person’s body by this point. Liuyun’s human-compatible Immortal Technique offers an alternative, and Orochimaru becomes one of its first successful practitioners 503 506.

Ōtsutsuki Campaign and Resurrection Research

Orochimaru’s improved Impure World Reincarnation becomes a major resource against the Ōtsutsuki. Working with Liuyun and Kabuto, he reanimates powerful dead shinobi and Ōtsutsuki, including Isshiki and Kaguya. He later infiltrates Divine Wood Star with Obito and helps coordinate the reanimated forces during the invasion 514 515 516 519 561 562 571 572.

After the expedition, he honors the fallen shinobi’s families while retaining three surviving Ōtsutsuki for further use. His later research supplies enhanced cloned bodies for Liuyun to resurrect Minato, Might Guy, Deidara, Sasori, and Kisame 593 607.

Appearance

  • Snake-like pupils: Repeatedly emphasized when he studies Liuyun or reacts to unusual ninjutsu 20 38 41.
  • Long tongue: Licks the corner of his mouth when excited; during preparations for a Six Paths-level experiment, his tongue nearly reaches his forehead 41 514.
  • White Snake body: Develops spreading white scales during the Ryūchi Cave trial and ultimately transforms into a snake 188 190.
  • Soft armor: Wears protective soft armor during the Rain Country war 117 120.

Personality

Orochimaru is initially courteous, gentle, and highly regarded within Konoha. He smiles warmly at Kushina and offers Liuyun patient technical guidance. His strongest fascination is the combination of innovative ninjutsu and exceptional young talent 20 41 43.

His curiosity regularly overrides concern for appearances or conventional boundaries. He listens avidly to Liuyun’s explanations of Chakra’s origins, collects powerful remains, and steals corpses to investigate their abilities. Nevertheless, he recognizes the danger of experimenting carelessly with Liuyun’s extraordinarily active cells 268 429 515.

As a commander, he is calculating and ruthless. He accepts civilian casualties rather than risk exposing an ambush, but also gives Liuyun explicit retreat instructions during dangerous operations. His loyalty is selective: he rejects Danzo for his apprentice’s sake and protects old comrades even while treating them coldly 73 118 303 420.

Research ultimately matters more to him than political office. Administrative work tires him, and he seeks retirement to pursue reanimation, immortality, and curse marks. In later years, he also shows respect for fallen allies and kindness toward their families 420 484 593 594.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Ninjutsu

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Sends venomous snakes from his arms to strike opponents; kills an enemy Chūnin with a throat bite during an ambush 73 138.
  • Multiple Serpent Entangling Hands: Releases numerous pythons to restrain targets, including Liuyun and Hanzō 140 154.
  • Snake Binding Hands and bodily extension: Transforms his hand to seize Liuyun’s wrist, then extends his neck to bite him 140.
  • Limit: Liuyun’s Chidori Current travels through the entangling snakes and forces Orochimaru to abandon them 140.

Summoning and Communication

  • Summons Manda to consume bandit corpses; the snake treats him disrespectfully and demands 100 live offerings for their next meeting 52.
  • Uses other giant snakes to transport recovered enemy remains 120.
  • Supplies messenger white snakes that swallow message tubes and carry correspondence 43 106 161.

Deception and Survival

  • Creates a false, apparently dismembered body from shed snakeskin filled with smaller snakes, then attacks from underground 140.
  • Uses Shadow Clones to block retreat routes and create confusion during raids 73 118.
  • Is initially vulnerable to Liuyun’s Sharingan genjutsu, which allows his student to stab him during their spar 140.
  • Later learns rapid genjutsu escape methods from Liuyun and receives an ocular technique placed in his eyes for emergency mental protection 370.

Sage Techniques and Cultivation

  • Masters Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode after his Dragon Vein-assisted bodily transformation 370.
  • Develops a Curse Mark that allows a person who masters it to enter Sage Mode; its development involves extensive human experimentation 503.
  • Reaches Late Qi Refining through Liuyun’s human-compatible cultivation method, gaining permanent Sage Mana rather than only a temporary Sage Mode enhancement 506.

Ninjutsu Research and Instruction

  • Identifies Liuyun’s concealed strength and deduces his Lightning Release training from evidence such as palm burns 39 41.
  • Corrects Chidori’s Chakra output, simplifies its hand seals, and identifies its bright light and loud thunderclaps as weaknesses 43.
  • Provides Liuyun with the Flying Thunder God Technique’s material; Liuyun demonstrates basic use five days later. Orochimaru’s own mastery of the technique is not established 336.
  • Researches Living Corpse Reincarnation as a possible answer to aging, but has not performed body seizure by the time Liuyun begins developing human cultivation 503.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Refines the technique and eliminates several known flaws before attempting Six Paths-level reanimations 514.
  • Uses Sage-enhanced reincarnation in cooperation with Liuyun and Kabuto to summon and control Isshiki and Kaguya 519.
  • Requires Liuyun’s personal support against these exceptionally powerful targets; strengthened sacrifices, body cells, suppression talismans, seals, and spatial preparations contribute to control 514 515 519.
  • Directs reanimated fighters and uses their borrowed abilities, including Kaguya’s Amenominaka and Obito’s Kamui 530 562 571.

Strategy and Intelligence

  • Leads reconnaissance, assassination, and military operations, matching tasks to his students’ abilities 73 118 144 366.
  • Withdraws after gathering intelligence on Animal Path and Deva Path Pain rather than continuing an unfavorable confrontation 370.
  • Proposes deceptive traps and off-world interception to keep devastating Ōtsutsuki battles away from the Ninja World 513 530 565.

Equipment / Items

  • Spirit-Connecting Grass — Given to him by Liuyun to strengthen spiritual energy and the soul; Orochimaru recognizes its compatibility with the Body-Reaper Technique 503.
  • Sealed Isshiki — After Isshiki’s reanimation and subjugation, he is sealed and stored inside Orochimaru’s ear as a reserve weapon 519.
  • Biological research facility — A heavily guarded laboratory with continuous defensive and anti-perception barriers. Even the Second Generation Heavenly Shadow requires Orochimaru’s permission to enter 515.
  • Cell and corpse collection — Includes Kage-level and Six Paths-level specimens, Moon Ōtsutsuki remains, and Obito’s body. Liuyun orders him to rebury Fugaku rather than keep the corpse for research 515.
  • Liuyun’s Sage Blood and cells — Exceptional research material that Orochimaru collects with permission and handles cautiously because of its extreme vitality 431 515.
  • Enhanced genetic clones — Bodies prepared from deceased allies’ genes and cells, later used in Liuyun’s resurrection procedure 607.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Liuyun — Apprentice, close friend, and eventual superior in power and authority. Orochimaru nurtures his talent; Liuyun later teaches him anti-genjutsu methods and genuine cultivation 43 268 370 506.
  • Nawaki — Student whom he takes on missions alongside Liuyun. Nawaki feels threatened by Orochimaru’s interest in the younger boy 50 52.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former teacher who initially trusts him deeply. Their relationship deteriorates over Liuyun’s treatment, Orochimaru’s experiments, and the establishment of Hidden Sound 20 244 304 413.
  • Tsunade — Longtime teammate whose wishes he refuses to place above village security. He expels her after she ignores his God Tree warnings, partly to protect her life 418 420.
  • Jiraiya — Longtime teammate and wartime partner. Jiraiya attempts to mediate Orochimaru’s disputes with Hiruzen and Tsunade 156 413 420.
