Background / History

Huangfu Yongchun was Wang Chen's neighbor in Luodu Immortal City and a veteran peak Golden Core cultivator. Despite being over two centuries old, he maintained the appearance of a young man through cultivation; his reputation for taking Dao Companions was widely known. At the time Wang Chen learned of him, Huangfu was marrying Ye Zifei as his twelfth Dao Companion. 1043

Wang Chen and Su Ziling attended the union ceremony and presented Ye Zifei with a Phoenix Hairpin magic treasure. Huangfu was impressed by its quality and by Wang Chen's artifact-refining ability. 1043 1044

Later, Huangfu commissioned Wang Chen to refine a flying sword from a sword embryo. In payment, he provided the complete inheritance jade slip for the Lightning Severing Sword Art, one of the seven components of the Seven Severing Sword Arts. He then brought Wang Chen into the Seven Severing Society, an alliance of Golden Core sword cultivators formed around the Seven Severing Sword Formation. 1048 1049

As the society's organizer, Huangfu led its members in preparing to hunt a fourth-tier Qing Jiao Demon King guarding a spirit-stone vein. He supplied a 130-year-old Dragon-Attracting Grass and a Dragon-Trapping Great Formation, allowing the group to kill the flood dragon and search its lair for mineral resources. 1052 1053 1057

Huangfu later revealed the existence of the Langya Grotto-Heaven, claiming that the Seven Absolute Sword Art originated there and asking Wang Chen to help open its inner sanctum. He explained that an old injury to his Dao foundation made forming a Nascent Soul increasingly urgent. 1092 1093 1095

The invitation was ultimately a ten-year scheme. The supposed Langya Grotto-Heaven was a façade for the Xuan You Immortal Mansion, and Huangfu intended to use Wang Chen's blood soul to activate the Soul Devouring Spirit Severing Array. With the assistance of his black-robed brother, he attempted to suppress and sacrifice Wang Chen. 1096 1097

Wang Chen had concealed his true peak Golden Core cultivation and prepared countermeasures. After collapsing the array with the Five-Colored Feather Fan, he trapped Huangfu and his brother within the Seven Severing Sword Formation and killed them both. 1097 1098

More than a year later, Huangfu's family discovered his sealed cultivation chamber empty. A Nascent Soul elder of the Huangfu clan confirmed through divination that he had died, prompting conflict among his Dao Companions and children over his inheritance. 1101

He was also ambitious and calculating. His pursuit of Nascent Soul cultivation, intensified by damage to his Dao foundation, led him to spend a decade arranging a sacrificial trap for Wang Chen.
