Background

Chi Yuan is an ancient warrior and the guardian of Shenzhou, having survived from the Previous Civilization and fought for more than fifty thousand years. Her original wish was to learn what she could do after being saved from disaster; over time, that purpose narrowed into the eradication of Destruction. 41 64

Long before the Tai Xu era, Chi Yuan used Divine Sound to cultivate protectors. The people empowered by it were gradually consumed by changing ambitions and misused their strength, creating widespread chaos. After eliminating those she had cultivated, Chi Yuan and a companion developed the Sword Heart Art as a restraint: it seals a cultivator's methods of controlling True Qi within a mental imprint, which is destroyed if the user loses control. 39 40

She later founded and led the Tai Xu lineage at Fu Yun Temple. Her own Sword Heart became the absolute creed that those who fall into demonic ways must be executed and that Destruction must be eliminated. This conviction made her a steadfast protector, but also kept her emotionally distant from her disciples. 38 41 63

Appearance

Chi Yuan is an ethereal woman whose reserved bearing is repeatedly compared to that of an immortal. She is commonly seen in an ink-wash-style Taoist robe while traveling by sword light. 37

Personality

Chi Yuan treats status as irrelevant, judging people chiefly by whether they have become demons. Four millennia of isolation and duty left her calm, blunt, and difficult to approach, yet not needlessly cruel: she distinguishes Erosion Markings and early possession from a person who has truly become a demon. 38 39

Her fear of power stems from her own failure with Divine Sound. She initially sees restrictions such as Sword Hearts as necessary safeguards against human corruption, especially when faced with the immense potential of Chang'an Melody. 40 111

Despite her severe public demeanor, Chi Yuan can show warmth, humor, and curiosity around those close to her. Ye Chang'an's music makes her smile more often, and she enjoys competitive video games when given the chance. 41 77

Tai Xu Mountain and Chang'an Melody

Chi Yuan first investigates the unusual Destruction-energy flow and sword formation surrounding Ye Chang'an and her disciples. Although she recognizes that the formation is not her own Sword God, she does not immediately understand its source. 37

When Ye Chang'an reveals his Erosion Markings and uses Chang'an Melody to erase them, Chi Yuan is forced to acknowledge that possession may not inevitably require execution. She listens to his proposal to incorporate the melody into Tai Xu Sword Qi, then explains the origins and purpose of the Sword Heart Art. 38 39 40

She gives Ye Chang'an the Xuanyuan Sword for self-defense, supports his work on modifying Chang'an Melody, and recognizes him as a martial uncle to her disciples rather than accepting him as her own disciple. 41

Simulation of Destruction Future

In the simulated future, Chi Yuan remains active into the twentieth century and is feared for having allegedly punched the First Arbiter to death. The loss of Ye Chang'an and her disciples leaves her isolated, increasingly unstable, and driven by obsession with Destruction. 50 61

Drawn to Ye Chang'an's Arbiter-level Destruction energy, she attacks him at Tai Xu Mountain, unable to accept that he is Chang'an. His attempts to restore her through Memory Feathers and music culminate in her disciples manifesting from her Sea of Consciousness to oppose her. 62 63

As her memories return, Chi Yuan's Sword Heart cracks. She witnesses Ye Chang'an being fatally struck while shielding her disciples, realizes the limits of her old creed, and finally shatters her Sword Heart. 64

Awakening and the Shattered Sword Heart

After Chi Yuan helps awaken Ye Chang'an from the Simulation of Destruction, she loses her memories of that future. She nevertheless hears his argument that power should be freely used by humanity rather than restricted by Sword Hearts. 110

Chi Yuan agrees to lift restrictions on Chang'an Melody if Ye Chang'an can defeat her. After he later wins their spar with limitless Imaginary Energy, she subconsciously recognizes him as the Chang'an of Sleepless Chang'an, and her Sword Heart is shattered as promised. 111 120
