Background / History
Decline and the Holy Son
Following the First Hokage's death, Konoha remained nominally the foremost of the Five Great Shinobi Villages but steadily declined in strength. Hidden Cloud and Hidden Stone repeatedly encroached on its interests and had secretly allied against it, while Hiruzen Sarutobi waited for a new generation of exceptional ninja to emerge. 2
Xiao Yun's discovery of Wood Chakra was therefore treated as a major blessing for the village. His chakra test reached an unprecedented nine-purity Wood Chakra, prompting Hiruzen to name him Konoha's Number One Genius and grant him status equal to the village's “Second Master.” 6
Hiruzen subsequently declared Xiao Yun Konoha's Holy Son. The title entitled him to priority access to chakra spirit stones, secret ninjutsu, elite instructors, and powerful ninja tools, while attracting competing recruitment efforts from Danzō's Anbu and the Hyuga Clan. 7
Forest of Death and Orochimaru's invasion
Konoha hosted the third Genin Selection Tournament, whose Forest of Death event required villages to send ten ninja into an isolated survival contest. Xiao Yun led Konoha's contingent against the Sand Village; nine Konoha ninja emerged alive compared with seven Sand ninja, giving Konoha the victory. 32 49
Orochimaru later launched a full-scale invasion with Sound Village forces and giant snakes, causing extensive destruction and casualties throughout Konoha. Jiraiya and Tsunade arrived with giant toads to counter the summons, while Hiruzen fought Orochimaru within a barrier. 90
Hiruzen used the Reaper Death Seal during the battle and died. Although Konoha ultimately won, the village was reduced to ruins; Hiruzen and his son Asuma were buried seven days later. 92 94
Xiao Yun's administration
At Hiruzen's funeral, Xiao Yun urged the populace to prioritize reconstruction and elect a new Hokage. Shingo, captain of the Anbu, nominated him for the position, citing his strength, support from Tsunade and the Hyuga Clan, and ties to the Hidden Cloud Village through Samui. 95
Xiao Yun became the Fifth Hokage despite Danzō's opposition. His early administration faced threats from Hidden Mist and Hidden Stone as well as open defiance from Danzō's remaining Root forces. 96 98
To break Root's influence, Xiao Yun orchestrated a false Hidden Stone attack that exposed Root's inaction before the public. The targeted Root members were arrested, and Xiao Yun invoked wartime authority to order their execution, though Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu urged him to spare personnel who could still serve Konoha. 99 100
After two months of reconstruction, Konoha had recovered considerably. Xiao Yun continued dispatching missions to raise reconstruction funds and uphold the village's alliance commitments. 105 115
Later expansion and crises
Konoha sheltered Hana, Utakata, and other jinchūriki targeted by Akatsuki. It also maintained a military alliance with the Earth Spider Clan, whose earlier agreement had been signed under Hiruzen. 105 114 150
Xiao Yun allocated the former Uchiha Clan territory to Hot Water Village, where its people restored Lord Jashin's statue and curse array. He formally welcomed Hot Water Village into Konoha and proposed both a special operations team and an Allied Shinobi Forces to prepare for an impending catastrophe. 172
Pain later attacked Konoha to demand its Tailed Beasts, destroying the village and killing many residents. Tsunade, Jiraiya, Kakashi, Anbu, and other Konoha shinobi defended the surviving population until Xiao Yun returned. 187 188 189 190
