Background / History
Before joining the Avengers Initiative, Banner feared the Hulk’s uncontrolled destruction so deeply that he considered suicide as a way to remove the threat. He resisted attempting to control the transformation, believing the power within him was dangerous to everyone around him. 167 169
S.H.I.E.L.D. recruited Banner to help locate Loki. He agreed to cooperate but intended to leave as soon as possible, still unwilling to be used as a weapon. During this period, Tony Stark forcibly provoked Banner into transforming, then defeated the Hulk in a sparring battle. The encounter exposed the Hulk’s lack of combat technique, but also convinced Banner that the power was not invincible—or inherently a curse. 174 181 184 185
Banner fought during the Chitauri invasion and used the Hulk to kill thousands of invaders. Witnessing the threat to ordinary people changed his outlook: he chose to accept the Hulk as a power that could protect others and began practicing under Tony’s supervision. 198
He and Steve Rogers later joined the Void Cult. Banner pursued physical evolution, trained in isolation on Tony’s private island, and gradually gained the ability to transform freely, maintain his sanity, and merge his consciousness with the Hulk. 203 205 264 269
Appearance
In his normal state, Banner is described as a youthful, refined, and gentle handsome man; Void evolution reduced the wrinkles on his face and restored a more youthful appearance. 205 409
- Human form: Youthful-looking, refined, and gentle in demeanor. 409
- Hulk form: Green-skinned giant exceeding three meters in height. 409
- Full transformation: Reaches approximately 3.5 meters tall. 265
- Partial transformation: Can selectively transform individual body parts, such as an arm or hand. 264 265
Personality
Banner was once defined by fear, restraint, and excessive concern for the harm he might cause. He endured humiliation rather than risk unleashing the Hulk and neglected his own well-being in an effort to avoid hurting others. 604 712
After the Chitauri invasion, Tony’s harsh intervention, and Kyle’s mentorship, Banner became more confident and open-minded. He accepted both his own strength and the Hulk as parts of himself, while retaining a fundamentally benevolent nature. 198 264 605 712
As a scientist, Banner remains curious and eager to learn. He is fascinated by unfamiliar technologies and treats power and technological research as complementary expressions of potential and wisdom. 203 285 771
Abilities & Skills
Hulk Transformation
Banner can transform into the Hulk voluntarily, either fully or partially. His control allows him to preserve his intelligence and consciously direct his strength during combat. 264 265
- Possesses immense physical strength; tanks were previously treated as little more than toys by the Hulk. 170
- Can shatter rock with casual blows and use crushed stone as high-speed projectiles. 264
- Has defense sufficient to endure modern bullets, artillery, extreme falls, and powerful direct impacts. 170 187
- Fully transformed Banner can use both fists and kicks rather than relying on the Hulk’s former instinctive brawling. 276
- The Hulk persona has merged with Banner and usually remains dormant, but may take control when Banner transforms while extremely angry. 264
Regeneration and Endurance
Banner built his evolutionary path around recovery and speed, compensating for his initially weaker combat technique. 265
- Had evolved his recovery ability thirty-seven times by the time of his spar with Tony. 265
- Can recover from ordinary damage within seconds while transformed. 265
- Broken bones can heal within approximately five minutes in Hulk form. 266
- His durability and recovery allow him to absorb mistakes while waiting for an opening against faster opponents. 265
Life-Energy Healing
Banner can perceive life energy and manipulate it to heal others, making him an unusual combination of powerhouse and healer. 409
- Healed Valkyrie after she suffered multiple broken bones. 409
- Restored Stephen Strange’s fractured hands after a failed magical demonstration. 539
- Offered to teach Stephen his healing ability, though Stephen declined because of the evolution-point cost. 539
Void Power and Evolution
As a Void Cult member, Banner received Void Power modifications and can direct evolution according to his desired path. 203 205
- Initially focused on strengthening his base body, since his untransformed human form had been physically ordinary. 205
- Later emphasized speed and recovery to complement the Hulk’s existing strength, defense, and endurance. 265
- Had not invested heavily in Void Power during the Xandar conflict and therefore could not fly. 295
- His Void Power can be depleted, leaving him unable to sustain aerial movement after extended combat. 301
Combat Training
Banner’s raw power initially far exceeded his combat ability. He actively trained to correct this weakness after recognizing that brute force alone was insufficient against skilled opponents. 183 301
- Kyle taught him the importance of technique, efficient force application, and “soft power.” 298
- Tony began teaching him the Supple Strength method. 443
- Eventually mastered Supple Strength, significantly narrowing the gap between his strength and technical skill. 545
- Can fight with controlled transformations rather than relying solely on the Hulk’s instincts. 264 276
Scientific Expertise
Banner is a genius scientist whose work remains central to his role in the Void Cult. 180 285
- His research on anti-electron collisions is considered unparalleled. 180
- Assisted Tony in developing the sublight thruster engine, enabling the Void Cult to independently build Cosmic Battleships. 439 440
- Helped make the resulting technology commercially viable, receiving a share of its profits and achieving financial freedom. 440
- Was identified by Harvey as a scientist capable of rapidly learning interstellar technologies and creating major innovations. 285
Relationships
- Tony Stark — Friend, mentor, sparring partner, and scientific collaborator. Tony pushed Banner to accept the Hulk, taught him Supple Strength, and developed the sublight thruster engine alongside him. 181 443 440
- Hulk — Banner’s merged transformation persona. They can communicate directly; the Hulk is normally dormant but may emerge during extreme anger. 264
- Steve Rogers — Close friend and fellow Void Cult member. Steve encouraged Banner to practice controlling the Hulk safely and kept him company after the Chitauri battle. 198 203
- Hercules Kyle — Mentor and friend who taught Banner combat technique, force application, and investigative methods. 298 605 722
- Harvey / Kassadin — God of the Void and source of Banner’s Void Cult blessing. Banner was initially nervous around Harvey, who reassured him after he gained control of the Hulk. 203 267
- Thor — Ally in the Avengers and Void Cult. Thor came to regard Banner’s controlled transformation as a major advantage in battle. 269 276
- Valkyrie — Ally whom Banner healed after her injuries in Knowhere; she accepted his offer of friendship. 409
