Background / History

Konoha and Akatsuki

Orochimaru was trained by Sarutobi Hiruzen alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. His separation from them was ideological as well as political: he recalls feeling genuine sadness when he realized that the three students and their teacher were following different paths 97 150.

After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru joined Akatsuki while maintaining a Hidden Sound base largely managed by Kimimaro. He also conducted transactions with Danzo, including supplying the arm intended to house transplanted Sharingan 98 332.

His desire for the Sharingan predates his alliance with Ingetsu. While still one of Konoha’s Sannin, he witnessed Itachi use the eyes to complete seemingly impossible shuriken training 54.

Alliance with Ingetsu

Before the Uchiha massacre, Ingetsu proposed a Konoha Crush Plan and a coordinated escape for an Uchiha squad. Orochimaru agreed to cooperate in exchange for three pairs of Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Ingetsu also tasked him with acquiring Izanagi and obtained the life-force-consuming Red Pill from his research drugs 54 55.

Danzo’s death gave Orochimaru an opportunity to seize his private assets inside and outside the Land of Fire. Among the materials he acquired were leftover Hashirama Cells. He regarded Ingetsu’s assault on Root and Anbu as an unexpected advantage for their plans 55 206.

At Ingetsu’s request, Orochimaru ambushed Kakashi’s pursuit force. A small snake distracted Kakashi while pythons silently strangled his companions. Orochimaru then restrained Kakashi, removed his left Sharingan, and preserved it in a liquid-filled test tube 56 57.

Valley of Punishment

Orochimaru reunited with Jiraiya and Tsunade near the battlefield but expressed no intention of returning to Konoha. He subsequently intercepted Itachi and Obito, attempting to claim Itachi’s body and provoking him over Sasuke 59 60 66.

When Itachi deployed Susanoo, Orochimaru answered with the Eight-Headed Serpent. Although the serpent possessed slightly greater raw power, it could not overcome Itachi’s spirit weapons. The Totsuka Blade severed its heads, while the Yata Mirror stopped its desperate charge 66 70.

The defeat forced Orochimaru to reconsider his position. He abandoned thoughts of deceiving Ingetsu over Kakashi’s eye after realizing that he could not even defeat Itachi. Itachi sealed him with the Totsuka Blade; by the time Ingetsu acted, the sealing process was already underway 70.

By the group’s next reunion, Ingetsu had rescued Orochimaru, though the supplied account does not explain how. Orochimaru appeared in Uchiha clothing and had joined the clan. He then supplied a giant snake to carry the survivors away from the Iwagakure army 77 78.

Sharingan Reward and Break with Akatsuki

Ingetsu fulfilled their agreement by awarding Orochimaru six Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Orochimaru nevertheless wanted to return to Akatsuki to obtain funding, disguising his private research expenses as organizational experiments. Ingetsu warned that their cooperation had crossed Akatsuki’s interests 80.

After arranging for Kabuto to replace his eyes, Orochimaru tested the warning through a snake clone. Zetsu led the clone into an encounter with Kakuzu and Sasori, who defeated it. The real Orochimaru received its feedback from outside the base and decided not to return 100 105.

Reanimation and the New Konoha

Orochimaru accepted responsibility for settling the Uzuki and Tsuchigumo clans while Ingetsu traveled toward Hidden Mist. Their cooperation also expanded into forbidden-jutsu research: Orochimaru planned to acquire former Hokage remains, and Ingetsu specifically requested that he prioritize Minato 89 93.

During his raid on Konoha’s Root base, Orochimaru found the Hokage coffins protected by extensive seals. With time running out, he took only the Fourth Hokage’s coffin. His subordinates also obtained remains associated with Sakumo Hatake, Rin Nohara, and Kushina Uzumaki 115 116.

He successfully reanimated Rin and Kushina, later completed preparations for Minato, and helped excavate Uchiha graves for Ingetsu’s reconstruction plans. He taught interested Uchiha the basics of Impure World Reincarnation and reanimated enough clan members to nearly exhaust his chakra 119 146 150 180.

Akatsuki Retaliation

Orochimaru’s intelligence network detected Akatsuki approaching the rebuilt village. He warned the Uchiha leadership and recommended avoiding an immediate confrontation with Sasori and his companion 184.

The ensuing battle exposed his limits against Sasori’s Third Kazekage puppet. Iron Sand severely injured him, and although he escaped his damaged body, the Iron Sand World Method trapped him again. He later credited Ingetsu with saving him from having to resort to resurrection methods 191 206.

Sunagakure Campaign

Orochimaru led Konoha forces to prevent Akatsuki from abducting Gaara. Captured White Zetsu deployed on Ingetsu’s behalf disrupted the enemy formation, allowing Orochimaru’s troops to protect Gaara, Chiyo, and Ebizo. All of his White Zetsu were consumed in the clash 243 252.

He later took over Sunagakure with Chiyo and Ebizo’s cooperation. His troops subdued resisting shinobi while sparing ordinary citizens. Orochimaru declined the Kazekage position, declaring that it belonged to Ingetsu, and directed Ebizo to organize migration and accompany him to the Wind Country’s Daimyo 268.

His frightening reputation helped the migration proceed smoothly. He also avoided placing the shinobi around him at the front of potential fighting, moving Sand personnel ahead to clear the route. As the migrants approached the Land of Rivers, he described their arrival in Konoha as becoming family 289 322.

Research under Ingetsu

Under Ingetsu, Orochimaru gained access to resources far beyond those available through Akatsuki. His underground laboratory underwent several expansions, eventually drawing on the combined materials of the Five Great Ninja Villages 434.

He accompanied Ingetsu, Kaguya, and Toneri on an expedition and recruited Amado after recognizing both his scientific usefulness and their shared desire to overcome figures once regarded as godlike. By the later Wood Release project, Orochimaru treated the potential spread of genetically granted bloodline abilities as a demanding responsibility affecting the future of shinobi 332 333 340 452.

Past-World Acting Hokage

The later past-world storyline presents Orochimaru still in Konoha, secretly conducting prohibited experiments and serving as acting Hokage after Hiruzen’s capture. He chose Shikaku as his assistant because they had worked together repeatedly during the Third Shinobi World War 410.

Facing retaliation from other villages over Urashiki’s attacks, he shifted responsibility onto Hiruzen to defuse the threat of war. He also offered joint research into the Nine-Tails, intending to give the other villages a shared reason to protect it. Tsunade and Jiraiya were shocked by both decisions 410 413.

Appearance

  • Face: Pale, cold-featured, and described as effeminate, with purple vertical eye shadow 54 116.
  • Eyes: Golden, slit-pupiled snake eyes; later also possesses a transplanted pair of Three-Tomoe Sharingan 66 105.
  • Tongue and anatomy: A long tongue, an unnaturally flexible neck, and the ability to develop poisonous fangs or transform his lower body into snakes 66 116.
  • Clothing: Wears Akatsuki’s red-cloud robe during his early operations, then Uchiha clothing bearing the red-and-white clan emblem 57 77.
  • Disguises: Uses sunglasses during his return to Akatsuki and a black hooded robe during the Root-base raid 105 116.

Personality

Orochimaru is opportunistic, calculating, and willing to exploit institutions for his own research. He takes Danzo’s assets after his death, seeks Akatsuki funding for private experiments, and initially considers deceiving Ingetsu over Kakashi’s Sharingan. His fascination with exceptional bodies and dōjutsu can override caution, as shown by his attempt to take Itachi’s body 55 66 70 80.

His loyalty to Ingetsu develops beyond their original transaction. After witnessing the difference in their strength, he becomes openly deferential and later regards Ingetsu as an invincible figure. That trust also changes his methods: rather than attempting to steal Toneri’s Tenseigan, he pursues research through permission and cooperation 70 206 254 333.

He is not uniformly detached from others. He acknowledges the pain of separating from his former comrades, comforts his disciples, and wins followers through benefits and generous gifts. Ingetsu considers him difficult to classify simply as good or evil because his generosity coexists with extreme ruthlessness 97 206 332.

Abilities & Skills

Serpent Techniques and Summoning

  • Uses small snakes for reconnaissance, hidden transport, and scroll-based communication 55 57 335.
  • Employs pythons and sleeve-born serpents to restrain or silently strangle enemies 56 57.
  • Summons giant snakes for combat, transportation, and underground escape 59 78 116.
  • Genetically modifies snakes to produce venom substantially stronger than that of wild snakes 116.
  • Provides Ingetsu with Shinza’s blood-contract scroll and explains its unusually high initial chakra requirement 98.

Eight-Headed Serpent

  • An S-rank forbidden technique that transforms Orochimaru into a colossal white serpent with eight heads 66.
  • Possesses raw power slightly above Itachi’s Susanoo, but cannot compensate for the latter’s Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror 70.
  • Repeated head loss significantly reduces its vitality and chakra; the Totsuka Blade ultimately seals the entire form 70.

Body Replacement and Snake Clones

  • Uses serpentine substitutes to survive otherwise devastating attacks; Kakashi’s Lightning Blade pierces a body that subsequently melts away 57.
  • His distinctive Body Replacement Technique produces a fresh body from the mouth of the damaged one 191.
  • Snake clones can operate remotely and return information to his main body. The clone defeated at Akatsuki’s base disperses into numerous snakes 105.
  • Replacement does not guarantee escape: Sasori traps him again after he sheds his injured body 191.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Modifies the technique so that even a piece of dried flesh can serve as the deceased person’s physical material 115.
  • Successfully reanimates Rin and Kushina and prepares Minato’s return 119 180.
  • Teaches its fundamentals to Uchiha observers and supports the restoration of deceased clan personnel 146 150.
  • Large-scale use remains taxing: reanimating the Uchiha nearly empties his chakra reserves 150.
  • Investigates combining reanimated shinobi with the forbidden technique Wrath of Heaven 99 100.

Defensive Ninjutsu

  • Summons Triple Rashomon to block Kisame’s Water Release attack 191.
  • Uses body deformation and rapid serpentine movement to evade strikes and long-range ninjutsu 116.

Intelligence and Command

  • Maintains an extensive intelligence network capable of locating stored remains, following Ingetsu’s movements, and detecting approaching Akatsuki members 115 120 184.
  • Exploits his detailed knowledge of Root’s layout and barrier weaknesses to escape when reverse summoning is blocked 116.
  • Commands Sound personnel, reanimated troops, and Konoha forces in rescue operations, conquest, and migration 55 243 252 268 289.
