Background / History
Warring States and Konoha’s Founding
During the Warring States period, the Uchiha could overwhelm clans below the Senju but remained checked by their Senju rivals. Madara became an admired clan figure for his strength and leadership against the Senju 96 150.
The Uchiha eventually reconciled with the Senju and jointly founded Konoha. When Madara left, the clan chose to remain with Hashirama in pursuit of peace. Ingetsu later invokes this founding partnership—and the Uchiha origin of Konoha’s name—to justify reclaiming the village 132 149 164.
An older part of the clan’s history centers on Unnamed Uchiha, later identified as Hikari: a girl treated as a war weapon who possessed multiple Mangekyō techniques. She remained sealed for hundreds of years before Ingetsu’s faction uncovered her 150 159.
Suppression and the Planned Rebellion
Konoha’s treatment of the Uchiha included political suppression, accusations, blocked advancement, and relocation to the village’s outskirts. Following the Nine-Tails incident, the village blamed the clan without investigating the actual perpetrator 127 149.
Accumulated grievances led clan leaders to consider rebellion, with secret discussions held at Nanga Shrine. Fugaku restrained the rebellion, but Konoha’s leadership chose extermination rather than negotiations. Danzō proposed the annihilation plan, and Koharu and Homura strongly supported it 3 11 127.
Night of the Massacre
One hour before the planned massacre, Police Force captain Ingetsu killed fellow Uchiha at the police prison and absorbed their Sharingan power. Nine responding police members pursued him; he controlled them and brought them to a cliff overlooking the clan grounds 1 2.
From there, the nine witnessed Itachi slaughtering Uchiha civilians. Itachi acted on behalf of Konoha’s leadership, while the masked man targeted the Police Force headquarters, where many Sharingan users were concentrated 2 3.
Ingetsu offered the witnesses a route out of Konoha and retaliation against Danzō. His intervention preserved survivors, including Mikoto; his shadow clone also showed Sasuke the truth of Itachi’s actions 3 33.
Konoha subsequently attributed the clan’s destruction to Ingetsu and the renegade squad. The elders offered Itachi command of Root so he could remain in the village with Sasuke 12 13.
Escape and International Pursuit
Konoha and the Fire Daimyō issued a worldwide wanted notice and dispatched ten ANBU pursuit teams. Other major villages, missing-nin, bounty hunters, and bandits also sought the fugitives because their Sharingan were valuable bloodline assets 33 41.
The survivors defeated Root forces at Katsuragi Mountain and faced a much larger encirclement at the Valley of Punishment. Their growing ocular power and Ingetsu’s chakra support allowed them to fight beyond their earlier limits 46 58 67.
Orochimaru joined the Uchiha and supported Ingetsu’s plans. The group later traveled to the Hidden Mist, captured the Three-Tails and Six-Tails, and returned to take revenge on Konoha 77 149.
Reclaiming Konoha
Nine Uchiha fighters annihilated dozens of Shimura clan ninja without losing a squad member. Sasuke rejoined the group, while Ingetsu defeated and sealed Hiruzen and Danzō 129 130.
Ingetsu publicly broadcast the massacre’s true events, declared that the Uchiha would rebuild Konoha, and announced war against all shinobi in pursuit of a new world order. The original Konoha clans were expelled 132 133 149.
Reconstruction used Iwa ninja labor. Ingetsu also released more than a thousand previously sealed ninja from different villages, gave them Konoha headbands, and incorporated them as Uchiha ninja. The repaired clan compound again became the survivors’ home 140 145.
Reanimation and Reconciliation
Ingetsu reanimated more than 300 Uchiha, including elders and Inaho. Many initially attacked or accused him of conspiring with Itachi and the masked man. He subdued and sealed them with Eight Thousand Spears and Susanoo 147.
The reanimated Uchiha subsequently confronted the fleeing old Konoha forces and attacked Itachi. Back in Konoha, Sasuke explained Ingetsu’s actions, and Inaho corroborated his testimony 148.
After learning the truth and confirming that the survivors followed Ingetsu willingly, the elders and ninja acknowledged him as clan leader and Hokage. Tsunade assigned them throughout the village’s departments, replenishing its administrative and military backbone 149.
Later Expansion
Hikari learned the clan’s recent history from the three elders and accepted the reorganized Uchiha. Her decision completed the quest that evolved Ingetsu’s eyes into Eternal Mangekyō 175 177.
The clan’s duties expanded beyond its own restoration. Reanimated Uchiha exposed a Kara stronghold, while the Great Elder welcomed the Raikage and displaced Cloud ninja into Konoha’s new Cloud District. Iwa and Sand forces also arrived as the village integrated former rivals 326.
Konoha eventually unified the Shinobi World, fulfilling the broader centralization pursued under Ingetsu’s leadership 482.

Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
- Combat perception: Three-tomoe users employ enhanced dynamic vision to evade attacks and identify openings 129.
- Ninjutsu copying: Requires sufficient ocular power and tomoe. For users born with five chakra natures, observing techniques can accelerate mastery of all five nature transformations 36.
- Emotional development: Ocular power is linked to mental energy, chakra, and powerful emotions. Awakening is not limited to pain; extreme joy and anticipation can also contribute, but emotion alone does not guarantee it 16 35.
- Limits: Sharingan does not itself improve precise chakra control, although it can monitor chakra flow. The traveling squad lacks long-range sensing beyond its visual reach 83 158.
Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo
- Rare awakening: Mangekyō is uncommon even within the modern clan; possessing ordinary Sharingan does not imply access to it 35.
- Individual techniques: Documented users possess distinct abilities, including Eight Thousand Spears, Kamui, Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Kotoamatsukami 1 26 80.
- Susanoo: A Mangekyō user with sufficient ocular power and chakra can unlock this third power permanently. Losing the eyes does not necessarily remove the ability to manifest it 76.
- Ingetsu’s battlefield network: Eight Thousand Spears allows him to draw chakra from marked allies, replenish their reserves, and later communicate with or control them remotely 36 67 177.
Fire Release and Close Combat
- Coordinated Fire Release: The survivors use Great Fireball and other fire techniques against White Zetsu 28.
- Swordsmanship: Tachi and other ninja swords form a major part of the squad’s fighting style 67 128 129.
- Combined assault: Nine Uchiha defeat the larger Shimura force through coordinated sword attacks and Sharingan-assisted movement 129 130.
Reanimated Forces
- Impure World Reincarnation: Restores hundreds of dead clan members as deployable personnel, rather than returning them to ordinary life 147 149.
- Combat endurance: Their immortality and Sharingan remain effective despite reduced strength 148.
- Village service: Reanimated elders and ninja fill departmental posts; a later reanimated team conducts operations against Kara 149 326.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Police Force uniforms and ninja swords — Standard equipment of the clan’s police personnel at the opening of the story 1.
- Dark Moon — Ingetsu’s black blade; accepts chakra nature and form transformations, allowing some ninjutsu to be released without hand seals 36 80.

- Shimura clan — Enemy force annihilated by the nine-member Uchiha squad during the reclamation of Konoha 129 130.
- Uzuki and Tsuchigumo clans — Former Konoha allies recruited into the new village; Ingetsu’s forces rescue their intercepted migration group 180 187.
- Former major ninja villages — Initially pursue the survivors for their Sharingan. Later, Cloud, Iwa, and Sand contingents enter the rebuilt Konoha as its political reach expands 41 326.
- Bloodline traffickers — The Great Tengu group attempts to coerce Itachi into producing Uchiha descendants for use as ninja, demonstrating continued efforts to exploit the clan’s hereditary abilities 490.
