Background / History
Founding and early legacy
Mavis Vermillion founded Fairy Tail in Magnolia alongside Precht, Yuri Dreyar, and Warrod Sequen. Before the guild's creation, Mavis used an incomplete form of Fairy Law to save her companions from a demon released by Blue Skull; the spell stopped her body from growing afterward. 469
After Mavis died from Zeref's curse, the Second Guild Master attempted to revive her. Those experiments instead transformed her preserved body into the Fairy's Heart, an infinite source of magic power concealed within the guild. 470
By George's arrival, Fairy Tail had existed for roughly a century. It was widely regarded as a trustworthy guild whose mages did not prey on civilians, though its missions routinely caused expensive collateral damage and Magic Council reprimands. 66
George's admission and the Phantom Lord war
Makarov accepted George after witnessing his Repair Magic, Reparo, and personally marked him with the Fairy Tail emblem. George's ability to restore damaged property immediately made him valuable to a guild notorious for destructive battles. 69
Phantom Lord later attacked the guild hall and assaulted Levy's team. After George defeated and interrogated Gajeel, Fairy Tail learned that Phantom Lord intended to capture Lucy Heartfilia and exploit her father's wealth. Makarov declared war in response. 142 145
Although Makarov was incapacitated after using Fairy Law, Fairy Tail rallied around George's defensive plan. The guild defeated Phantom Lord, and the Magic Council disbanded Phantom Lord and awarded Fairy Tail its mobile fortress and magic crystal cannon as compensation. 151 154
Following the conflict, the fortress was grafted onto the original guild building. Jellal and his companions were later admitted after George proved that Ultear had controlled Jellal's actions. 212
Laxus's rebellion and succession
Laxus attempted to trigger a civil war by trapping powerful guild members inside a runic barrier. George and Levy deciphered and destroyed the barrier in five minutes. 276 280
When Laxus cast Fairy Law over Magnolia, the spell harmed no one because he did not truly regard Fairy Tail or the town's residents as enemies. George proposed the guild's first magic tournament as an alternative means to resolve the conflict and determine its strongest mage. 281 282
Before George departed on the Hundred Year Quest, Makarov chose him as his intended successor and offered to teach him Fairy Law. 280 George later succeeded Macao and became Fairy Tail's Sixth Guild Master. 468
Tenrou Island disappearance and recovery
During George's absence, Fairy Tail's main force vanished with Tenrou Island after an S-Class Mage examination. The guild lost its strongest members, suffered a sharp decline in missions, and saw members leave amid uncertainty over whether the missing mages could return. 298 356 357
As Guild Master, George entered the Grand Magic Games to restore Fairy Tail's reputation. He temporarily transferred leadership duties to Macao because guild masters could not compete. 356
George ultimately mastered Fairy Sphere and used it to rescue the members sealed on Tenrou Island. The missing main force had been protected in a time rift by Mavis, who fueled the original Fairy Sphere with the members' combined magic and belief. 467
Expansion under George
After the Grand Magic Games, Fairy Tail recruited several powerful former Sabertooth mages, including Minerva, Orga, Rufus, Yukino, Sting, and Rogue. 380 468
George also arranged for Princess Jade to enter the guild for seven years of training and sought access to the Royal Library and Magic Development Bureau's spellbooks in exchange for repairing the royal palace. 379
By the time of the Black Dragon crisis, Fairy Tail had become Ishgar's strongest guild, recruited mages from across the continent, and gained enough influence that the Magic Council could no longer forcibly sanction it. Ultear Milkovich and Meldy were among the later recruits. 606
Culture and Reputation
- Fairy Tail accepts applicants based on character and background rather than raw strength; Makarov considers mutual trust and aid between companions the guild's founding purpose. 68
- The guild has a close relationship with Magnolia's residents, who openly watch and cheer its mages' duels and Magic Parade performances. 111 276
- Its mages are exceptionally capable in combat but prone to spontaneous brawls and destructive overkill, often leaving the guild with repair bills and Council complaints. 66 67 147
- Members respond fiercely when one of their own is threatened. No member blamed Lucy for Phantom Lord's attack; instead, the guild unanimously chose to protect her. 146
- Fairy Tail fields an elite-heavy roster. During the Phantom Lord war, ordinary Fairy Tail mages could generally handle more than a dozen opposing mages each, while fighters such as Erza and Natsu could defeat opponents in single attacks. 146

|---|---|
| Mavis Vermillion | First Guild Master and founder; creator of Fairy Law, Fairy Glitter, and Fairy Sphere. 469 290 |

Guild Assets and Facilities
- Guild Hall — Originally a prominent multi-story building in Magnolia, marked by a plaque depicting two dancing fairies and the guild emblem. 66
- Library — A major resource for magical study, where Levy introduced George to the guild's magical knowledge and members' specialties. 70
- Mobile fortress — Captured from Phantom Lord and grafted onto the guild hall, turning Fairy Tail into Magnolia's tallest and most conspicuous building. 212
- Magic crystal cannon — Installed as part of the fortress conversion. 212
- Light Magic super circle — A fortress-scale magic circle capable of condensing Light Magic for attacks. 212
- Guild dormitories — Male and female dormitories relocated into the expanded fortress. 212
- Tenrou Island — Fairy Tail's sacred ground and Mavis's birthplace; non-members are normally unable to enter due to the First Master's magic. 298
Fairy Tail Super Magic
Fairy Law
A Light-element Super Magic that eliminates only targets the caster genuinely recognizes as enemies. Its effectiveness depends on the caster's true feelings, as demonstrated when Laxus's casting failed to harm Fairy Tail or Magnolia's residents. 148 281
- Created by Mavis Vermillion. 469
- Requires a foundation in Light Magic. 290
- Consumes the caster's life force and lifespan; greater enemy strength or numbers increase the cost. 290
- Makarov is the only master before George known to have learned it. 290
Fairy Glitter
A high-level Light Magic spell that gathers the light of the sun, moon, and stars into a destructive beam from the heavens. 290
- Its power is comparable to Fairy Law. 290
- Does not consume lifespan or life force. 290
- Requires Light Magic mastery beyond Makarov's level. 290
Fairy Sphere
Fairy Tail's strongest defensive magic, capable of sealing its targets outside normal time. 467
- Mavis used the guild members' combined magic and belief to protect the Tenrou Island mages from Acnologia. 467
- George later mastered and cast Fairy Sphere independently. 467
- Its time-based defense can withstand attacks unless an opponent can manipulate time or overwhelm time itself through extraordinary force. 467
Fairy's Heart
Also called Lumen Starfall and the Myth of Light, Fairy's Heart is the preserved body of Mavis Vermillion within a massive crystal. 290
- It possesses infinite magic power due to the failed resurrection research performed by the Second Guild Master. 290 470
- Its magical reserves could power repeated use of weapons on the scale of the Magic Council's Magic of the Spirit. 290
- Knowledge of Fairy's Heart is restricted to guild masters because of its danger to the world. 290
