Background / History
After his Killing Curse against Harry Potter rebounded, Voldemort lost his body and survived by possessing frail animals in the Albanian Forest. He later possessed Quirinus Quirrell in an unsuccessful attempt to use the Philosopher's Stone, then returned to the forest after Quirrell's death 392.
His survival depended on soul fragments concealed in Horcruxes. The diary fragment was destroyed after George extracted its Dark Magic knowledge, and the loss of Ravenclaw's diadem pushed Voldemort to abandon his cautious isolation. He possessed Nagini, whose body retained wizard blood and could cast magic, then planned to recruit the Death Eaters imprisoned in Azkaban 155 391 392.
Voldemort resurrected earlier than expected and reassembled the Death Eaters at Malfoy Manor. He pressured Draco Malfoy into accepting a mission to kill Harry Potter, using the threat primarily to control Lucius Malfoy 487.
George confronted him after the meeting, survived Voldemort's Killing Curse, and destroyed his physical body with a modified, shield-piercing Killing Curse. When Voldemort's soul attempted to escape, George captured it with Spirit Control 488.

Abilities & Skills
Dark Magic
Voldemort possessed extensive Dark Magic knowledge and used the diary fragment to instruct George in advanced curses. His magic included the Killing Curse and the soul-splitting method used to create Horcruxes 124 224 488.
- The diary fragment rapidly improved George's Dark Magic training. 124
- His Killing Curse failed to harm George during their final confrontation. 488
- His Horcrux method allowed portions of his soul to endure the destruction of his body. 391 392
Possession and Survival
Following his original defeat, Voldemort sustained himself by possessing living hosts until he could recover a body.
- He initially possessed ordinary animals in Albania, though this left him severely limited. 392
- He possessed Quirinus Quirrell during the attempt to obtain the Philosopher's Stone. 392
- He later possessed Nagini, gaining access to the giant snake's magic. 392
Parseltongue
As a Parselmouth, Voldemort could communicate with and control snakes. This affinity made Nagini a particularly effective host 392.
Manipulation and Intimidation
Voldemort ruled through fear, assigning Draco a lethal task to pressure Lucius and relying on the loyalty of imprisoned Death Eaters rather than former followers who had distanced themselves from him 392 487.
Relationships
- George — Initially deceived by George through the diary, whom he taught Dark Magic in hopes of eventually seizing his body. George later destroyed his body and captured his soul 124 155 488.
- Nagini — Possessed host and Horcrux vessel; Voldemort used her retained wizard blood and magic after abandoning the Albanian Forest 392.
- Harry Potter — The failed Killing Curse left a fragment of Voldemort's soul inside Harry, making him an unintended Horcrux 391.
- Lucius Malfoy — Former follower whom Voldemort distrusted; he used Draco's assigned mission to keep Lucius obedient 487.
- Draco Malfoy — Ordered to kill Harry Potter, leaving him frightened and reluctant 487.
- Death Eaters — His core followers and intended means of rebuilding power; he planned to free the most loyal among them from Azkaban 392.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Diary manipulation
The diary's sixteen-year-old soul fragment recognizes George as an exceptionally capable Slytherin and offers him power in exchange for trust. Both parties conceal their real intentions: Voldemort intends to take George's body, while George intends to extract Dark Magic knowledge before destroying the Horcrux 124 155.
Horcrux losses and Nagini possession
The destruction of the diary and diadem makes Voldemort increasingly anxious that Dumbledore has uncovered his Horcruxes. He takes possession of Nagini and begins pursuing Death Eater allies rather than waiting for a safer resurrection opportunity 392.
Defeat and identity usurpation
George kills Voldemort's restored body and captures his escaping soul. He then extracts the fragments from Nagini and Harry Potter, removing Voldemort's remaining anchors 488 489 490.
The Thought Body impostor
After Voldemort's defeat, George creates a Thought Body that publicly assumes Voldemort's identity. This impostor commands the Death Eaters, stages an attack at the Quidditch World Cup, kidnaps Ministry leaders, and presents itself as the returned Dark Lord; these actions are not performed by the original Voldemort 489 493 497.
