Background / History
Gu Shao'an came from Jiangnan. His family had once been wealthy, but his parents were killed by mountain bandits while passing through Jade Mountain Town. Abbot Juechen rescued him when his life was in danger and brought him to Emei. 3 23
During Emei's disciple-selection trials, he reached the summit of the Heart-Questioning Stone Steps first and calmly navigated the mist-filled Bamboo Sea with his knowledge of the Five Elements and Eight Trigrams. His examination revealed Superior Bone Structure, a rare aptitude within Emei. 2 3
Abbess Miejue personally accepted him as her disciple. Gu Shao'an initially sought a secure place to settle, but recognized the value of becoming the favored direct disciple of Emei's Sect Leader and committed himself to the sect's growth. 3 173
Miejue invested Emei's remaining Bodhi Exquisite Pills and its advanced martial arts in him, viewing him as the sect's chance to regain its former prominence. Gu Shao'an later helped uncover the Heavenly Sword's concealed treasure-map fragment and received the sword itself, marking him as Emei's next Sect Leader. 13 79 133
Appearance
Gu Shao'an grows from a handsome, steady youth into a tall and powerfully built young martial artist. His bearing is regularly compared to a sheathed sword: restrained, elegant, and concealing sharpness. 7 93 209
- Bright, deep-set eyes and refined features; his early expression is marked by unusual resolve. 2 3
- Dark hair, often tied with a blue ribbon when wearing Emei's blue-and-white disciple robes. 7
- Broad shoulders, a lean waist, and a physique honed through heavy-sword training. 93 124

Personality
Gu Shao'an is notably calm under pressure. During Emei's entrance trials, he endured exhaustion without losing composure; later, he repeatedly faces powerful opponents and political maneuvering without becoming reckless. 2 224 292
He is disciplined to an exceptional degree. His traits accelerate comprehension, but he attributes their usefulness to persistent, focused practice rather than treating them as a substitute for effort. 76
Though generally gentle and polite, he is pragmatic when protecting Emei or confronting enemies. He hides his true strength for critical moments, feigns ignorance when secrecy serves the sect, and carefully planned Gu Santong's escape from Dragon Guard Manor. 43 79 189
Gu Shao'an also has a strong sense of responsibility toward Emei and ordinary people. He proposed monthly free medical consultations in Jiading Prefecture to build his medical experience while spreading Emei's benevolent reputation. 74
