Yang Yan is the daughter of the escort Yang Tie. Having travelled with him in the past, she gained familiarity with conditions along the northern border and could recognize Great Yuan military-style boots by their design and impracticality in summer weather 134.

After an encounter with human traffickers made her recognize the importance of strength, she agreed to her father's plan for her to join Emei. Shitai Jueyuan had already noted Yang Yan's bravery and resourcefulness during the incident at the dye house 65 70.

While Yang Yan was recovering, Abbot Juechen examined her body and discovered her excellent bone structure and unusually broad meridians.
