Background / History

Zhou Zhiruo had already joined Emei roughly half a year before Gu Shao'an arrived. As one of Miejue’s younger personal disciples, she initially felt isolated from the older senior sisters and was eager to befriend the junior brother closest to her own age. 8

Her family was murdered on the day she encountered the young Zhang Wuji near the Han River, a memory vivid enough for her to recognize him years later. Her deceased father is buried in her ancestral hometown, which she later visits with Gu Shao'an and Yang Yan. 146 290

At Emei, Zhou Zhiruo builds her foundation through demanding practice, including sword stances with sandbags tied to her arms. Though her talent is below Gu Shao'an’s, Miejue praises her as “outwardly gentle but inwardly strong” and approves of her discipline. 13 24

Her first encounter with enemies comes during the Blackwood Mountain bandit suppression. Frightened at first, she regains her composure under Gu Shao'an’s instruction and defeats a bandit with Willow Leaf Swordplay. 21 29

Over the following years, she trains alongside Yang Yan, receives the Muscle and Bone Strengthening Chapter, learns the first eight stances and internal cultivation method of the Emei Sword Manual, and eventually helps teach Mei Jiangxue the Emei Nine Yang Manual. 92 177 213

Appearance

Zhou Zhiruo is repeatedly noted for a pure, refined beauty and a cool, gentle bearing. As she matures, her features are compared to an ink painting; her clear eyes are likened to autumn pools, while her blue-and-white Emei robes emphasize her graceful but firm presence. 83 124

  • Often described as resembling a secluded orchid: elegant, serene, and untouched by worldly vulgarity. 83 130
  • Has clear, beautiful eyes and delicate features, with an expression that is usually gentle but can become cold and resolute in battle. 69 230
  • Wears Emei’s blue-and-white disciple robes; for Emei’s first-class-status celebration, she wears gold and white with magnolia embroidery. 124 307
  • Uses a long sword and adopts practical fitted clothing while training or traveling. 136 233

Personality

Zhou Zhiruo begins as pure-hearted, kind, and considerate. She worries deeply about taking lives during her first mission, yet retains compassion even after experiencing family tragedy and rigorous martial training. 17 21

She is diligent and quietly stubborn. Although disappointed that Gu Shao'an’s exceptional talent prevents them from practicing together as often as she wishes, she accepts this without hindering his progress and continues strengthening her own foundation. 13

Her experiences broaden her outlook. Miejue teaches her caution toward strangers, while Gu Shao'an helps her understand the burden of sect leadership and why Ding Minjun’s betrayal could not be answered with leniency. 37 54

When others are endangered, Zhou Zhiruo is decisive and self-sacrificing. She remains behind against overwhelming enemies so Yang Yan and Mei Jiangxue can escape, accepting the possibility of death rather than abandoning them. 228 230

Abilities & Skills

Emei Nine Yang Manual

Zhou Zhiruo cultivates the Emei Nine Yang Manual as her core internal art, building a notably solid foundation rather than rushing through its layers. 93 374

  • Reaches Great Accomplishment in the first layer after three years of training. 93
  • Possesses true essence after entering Condensing Qi into Essence. 299
  • Reaches the sixth layer by the time Gu Shao'an returns to Emei after several months away. 479
  • Her cultivation is slower than Yang Yan’s but remains among the leading disciples of her generation. 130

Willow Leaf Swordplay

Her most compatible sword art is Willow Leaf Swordplay, whose concealed sharpness matches her outward gentleness and inner resolve. 130

  • Initially uses it at the Entry Level while demonstrating Emei’s fundamentals. 5
  • Reaches Perfection after prolonged practice and Gu Shao'an’s detailed instruction. 130
  • Uses its soft, elusive qualities to neutralize stronger opponents and defend without yielding ground. 113
  • Its principles later influence her footwork and the disordered elegance of her advanced swordplay. 231

Emei Sword Manual — *Sword Three: Thousand Willows*

Zhou Zhiruo’s defining advanced technique is Sword Three: Thousand Willows, an elusive sword move that blossoms into countless interwoven strands of sword energy. 228 233

  • First employs the technique while protecting Yang Yan and Mei Jiangxue during an ambush. 228
  • Breaks through a hidden meridian amid battle, allowing her perception to sharpen dramatically and her swordplay to touch the realm of Momentum. 231
  • Combines the move with Yin and Yang energies from Heaven and Earth Great Shift, creating pale-golden threads resembling swirling willow catkins. 233
  • Can deflect and overwhelm multiple attackers, but lacks sufficient destructive power against a Condensing Qi into Essence body-refiner using Dragon Elephant Prajna Skill. 231

Heaven and Earth Great Shift

Zhou Zhiruo is permitted to practice the first level of the Ming Cult’s ultimate art, but is forbidden from revealing it publicly or progressing further before reaching Condensing Qi into Essence. 133

  • Integrates its energy with Sword Three: Thousand Willows to create her thousand-thread Momentum. 233
  • Grants an agile, willow-like quality to other techniques, including Golden Summit Cotton Palm and Sunset Swordplay. 233

Three Manifestations of the Divine Dragon

She uses Three Manifestations of the Divine Dragon as a movement technique, adapting it with the irregular grace of Willow Leaf Swordplay during her breakthrough. 231

  • Enables rapid evasions and sudden changes of direction. 230 231
  • Allows her to launch herself from a moving horse and engage encircling enemies directly. 228

Tactical Judgment

Zhou Zhiruo develops practical judgment beyond martial arts.

  • Alerts Emei elders when she recognizes a dangerous confrontation at an inn, rather than confronting the situation alone. 60
  • Proposes rotating Emei’s stationed disciples to prevent complacency, corruption, and entrenched local interests. 123
  • Quickly identifies poisoned chopsticks and leads Yang Yan and Mei Jiangxue out of an inn without causing panic. 228
  • Fires an Emei signal flare after being cornered, calling for sect assistance. 229

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Long sword — Her primary weapon; used for Willow Leaf Swordplay, Sunset Swordplay, and Sword Three: Thousand Willows. 113 228
  • Rainstorm Pear Blossom Needles — A concealed weapon previously given by Gu Shao'an; she deploys it decisively against pursuers. 228
  • Emei signal flare — Marked with the sect emblem and used to summon assistance during an emergency. 229

Relationships

  • Abbess Miejue — Master. Miejue values Zhou Zhiruo’s diligence, moral character, and inner strength, while teaching her caution, righteousness, and the responsibilities of leadership. 24 35 54
  • Gu Shao'an — Junior brother, confidant, mentor, and romantic partner. He guides her early combat training and advanced swordplay, while she supports his burdens and accepts his vow to protect her. 29 233 249 290

  • Mei Jiangxue — Junior sister. Zhou Zhiruo helps teach her the Emei Nine Yang Manual and protects her during the roadside ambush. 213 228
  • Bei Jinyi — Senior sister and early instructor. She oversees Zhou Zhiruo’s foundational sword-stance training and explains why Gu Shao'an cannot train with her constantly. 13
  • Zhao Jingxuan — Eldest senior sister. She encourages Zhou Zhiruo and Gu Shao'an to spend time together because of their similar ages. 8
  • Gu Santong — Rescuer. He intervenes when Zhou Zhiruo is overwhelmed by a Condensing Qi into Essence monk, then treats her injuries. 230 232
  • Zhang Wuji — Childhood acquaintance. Zhou Zhiruo recognizes him years later from the day her family was murdered. 146
  • Song Qingshu — Unwanted admirer. He is infatuated with her, while Zhou Zhiruo remains distant and displeased by his familiarity. 43 138
