Background / History
Noxus was founded when the Noxii and other survivors seized the Immortal Bastion during the Rune War, overthrowing its tyrannical rulers. The Empire defines this founding as Year One of the Runeterra Calendar. 113
Its first recorded conquests began under General Kled in 3 CE. By 9 CE, Noxus had unified its surrounding regions; in 11 CE, General Holt Yarlin led the destruction of its first kingdom. 114
Noxus later adopted an imperial system and elected its first emperor, beginning an era of rapid expansion. Its territorial growth was built through conquest, with many present Noxian cities standing where former kingdoms and principalities once existed. 115
In Continental Year 989, Ryan Meredith, Darius, and Swain established the Trifarix Council. The Council replaced imperial authority, abolished hereditary rule for emperors and nobles, and formally upheld the Empire’s law of strength. 115
Under the Trifarix, Noxus pursued reforms in military merit, rewards and punishments, industry, education, magical research, and economic development. 178 It also proclaimed a unified Runeterra Calendar and positioned itself as the recorder and preserver of histories from every region. 113 114
Government
Noxus is governed by the Trifarix Council, an institution that exercises the Empire’s will in place of an emperor. Its founding leaders were Ryan Meredith, Darius, and Swain. 115
- Ryan Meredith — Council President; architect of the Trifarix Revolution and a central force behind Noxus’s magical, political, and military expansion. 188 258
- Swain — Vice Council President; directs administration, intelligence, and long-term strategy. 188 612
- Darius — Vice Council President and the Hand of Noxus; leads campaigns and embodies the Empire’s martial ideal. 42 105
- Morgana — Council member who represents and advances the Empire’s Penitent Order and its doctrine of redemption. 132 165
- Viktor — Trifarix Councilor associated with Noxus’s mechanical forces and Machine Ascension. 250 491
- Orianna — Trifarix Councilor and a key operator of the Heart of Noxus. 545
- Camille — Trifarix Council member and former member of Piltover’s Ferros Clan. 478
The Trifarix’s stated ideal is that the Empire belongs to every Noxian, including their right to question its direction and help shape its future. 108
Society and Culture
Noxus is a highly stratified society in which status is determined by demonstrated value rather than birthplace. Strength is broadly defined to include political ability, military service, martial prowess, business, and research. 88 99
- Noxus accepts people from across Runeterra, including Noxii, Freljordians, Shurimans, Zaunites, Piltoverans, Demacians, Ionians, and Vastaya Shards. 108
- Service is treated as a valuable craft rather than an inherently degrading role. 11
- Knowledge is recognized as a form of strength under the Empire’s laws of power. 112
- Citizens can earn status through glory, merit, skill, and contribution rather than inherited titles. 115 219
- Merit Points grant access to Imperial benefits, including advanced prosthetics for veterans; they cannot simply be exchanged for gold. 152 227
- Prospective Noxians may join after proving themselves diligent, progressive, and committed to improvement. 260
Noxian culture condemns cowardice, values honor, and presents self-improvement as a collective duty. 108 The Empire’s older reputation for conquest and slaughter remains prominent, but the Trifarix era increasingly frames Noxian power as liberation from inherited authority and oppression. 42 178
Noxian Judgment
Noxian Judgment is a formal means of resolving disputes through a fight to the death without outside interference. Emperor Darkwill invoked the practice when challenged by Swain. 88
Immortal Bastion
The Immortal Bastion is Noxus’s capital and symbolic center. Its colossal Black Gate stands at the city’s core, surrounded by fortified government and military structures. 88
- Noxian Black Gate — Ancient symbol of the Empire and site of its founding flag. 113
- Floating Fortress / Meredith Castle — Ryan’s elevated fortress and a major magical center above the city. 88 250
- Mage Tower — A library and research space containing extensive historical records and magical texts. 88 96
- Noxian Coliseum — Arena where gladiators seek recognition and glory. 152
- War College — The Empire’s talent reserve, with departments for warfare, history, Hextech, mechanics, and magic. 210
- Sky structures — The city later expands into floating buildings connected by black-stone bridges. 182 250
The capital’s architecture incorporates styles from throughout Runeterra, including Freljordian tents, Shuriman homes, and Piltover-style buildings. 88 98
