Background / History
After suffering defeat against Whitebeard, Crocodile concluded that his Devil Fruit power could not rival the Gura Gura no Mi. He turned instead toward the ancient weapon Pluton, believed to be capable of destroying an island with a single shot. 56
He established Baroque Works and spent five years covertly destabilizing Alabasta. His plan involved using Dance Powder to concentrate rainfall around the capital, creating drought elsewhere; he would then use sandstorms to ruin oasis cities and force civilians toward rebellion. Meanwhile, he cultivated a public image as Alabasta's heroic guardian, intervening against destructive pirates and becoming widely adored by the populace. 49 53 60 70
Crocodile's scheme began to collapse after Sea Tiger's group exposed Vivi's identity, captured Nico Robin, rescued King Cobra, and disrupted Baroque Works' communications and false-king operation. Unable to locate them even after pushing his Observation Haki to its limit, Crocodile abandoned subtlety and launched an uncontrollable, nation-threatening sandstorm at Alubarna. 69 70
Appearance
Crocodile is a tall, scarred man whose appearance is immediately recognizable throughout Alabasta. He habitually presents himself with a composed, intimidating elegance. 55
- Slicked-back hair.
- Long horizontal scar across his face.
- Earring in his right ear.
- Constantly smokes cigars.
- Golden hook in place of his left hand. 55
Personality
Crocodile values strength above all else and dismisses weak followers as burdens. Daz Bonez's death angered him not out of personal attachment, but because Bonez had been someone Crocodile personally selected for Baroque Works. 56
He is calculating and cautious in long-term planning, concealing his criminal ambitions behind the image of Alabasta's protector. However, once that plan failed, his frustration overtook his restraint; he was willing to bury the capital beneath a sandstorm and destroy its foundations to force victory. 49 69 70 71
His pursuit of Pluton stemmed from dissatisfaction with his own limits after facing Whitebeard. He sees companionship and romance as weaknesses, calling friendship and women “fragile shackles.” 56 71
Abilities & Skills
Logia-Type Sand Manipulation
Crocodile can transform his body into sand, reform from dispersed particles, and control vast amounts of sand across the desert.
- Materializes from sand, including while airborne. 55
- Uses elementalization to evade attacks and retreat through a sandstorm. 71
- Can fly, though his movement is dependent on wind direction and is not specialized for speed. 54 58
- Gains a major environmental advantage in Alabasta's desert terrain. 53
- Created sandstorms powerful enough to destroy several oasis cities. 57
Dehydration
By making contact, Crocodile can draw moisture from a target's body.
- Bypassed Ling Donglai's Armament Haki-protected fist by turning his arm into sand.
- Withered Ling Donglai's right arm almost instantly and stripped skin from it through sand abrasion. 56
- Attempted to drain Ling Donglai completely during their final battle. 71
Erosion Reincarnation
Crocodile can rapidly desertify surrounding terrain by placing his hand on the ground.
- Pulverizes hard rock into sand.
- Used the technique beneath Alubarna, threatening to collapse the capital while Ling Donglai was defending it. 71
Observation Haki
Crocodile possesses Observation Haki and can use it to search across the desert.
- Searched for Sea Tiger, Vivi, and Robin for an entire day.
- Failed to find them after their positions and communications were obscured by the Domain of the Overlord. 70
Combat Experience
Crocodile is a veteran combatant who had previously confronted Whitebeard and endured Ling Donglai’s initial heavy barrage long enough to escape. 56 71
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Golden hook — prosthetic weapon replacing his left hand. 55
- Cigars and lighter — frequently used during conversations and while directing his plans. 53 70
Relationships
- Ling Donglai / Sea Tiger — Enemy. Crocodile effortlessly defeated him during their first encounter, offered him a position in Baroque Works, then was later killed by him during the battle for Alabasta. 56 72
- Vivi — Target of his Alabasta conspiracy. Her return and alliance with Sea Tiger helped dismantle his false-king operation. 49 69
- Nico Robin — Subordinate whose ability to interpret information about Pluton was essential to his plans; Crocodile regarded her with suspicion and would have killed her if she were not useful. 67
- King Cobra — Ruler of Alabasta, whom Crocodile imprisoned through Baroque Works while seeking information on Pluton. 67 69
- Daz Bonez — Intended Baroque Works recruit. Crocodile was angered by his death because it challenged Crocodile's judgment in choosing subordinates. 56
- Baroque Works agents — Treated as expendable tools and showed no concern when low-level agents were left brain-dead or when his organization was destroyed. 56 69
Story Role / Major Arcs
Alabasta Infiltration
Crocodile operates as Alabasta's celebrated guardian while secretly using Baroque Works, Dance Powder, drought, and manufactured unrest to seize the kingdom. His true objective is Pluton. 49 60 67
First Battle with Sea Tiger
He confronts Ling Donglai after the latter kills Daz Bonez. Crocodile recognizes Ling's Armament Haki but overwhelms him, dehydrates his arm, and invites him to become Baroque Works' first-ranked agent. Ling refuses. 56
Fall of Baroque Works
Sea Tiger's group captures Robin, rescues Cobra, exposes the fake king, and destroys the operational basis of Crocodile's five-year conspiracy. Crocodile is unable to locate them through Observation Haki. 67 69 70
Battle for Alubarna
Crocodile unleashes a massive sandstorm on the capital and attempts to destroy the city from below with Erosion Reincarnation. Ling Donglai counteracts him while shielding and levitating Alubarna. 70 71
Death
After being beaten out of his elemental form and forced to flee through the sandstorm, Crocodile is impaled by a black iron rod coated in Armament Haki. The strike prevents his body from turning into sand, killing him instantly. 71 72
Trivia
- Crocodile's 81,000,000 Beli bounty was considered abnormally low for a Logia-type user; Ling Donglai believed it should have been at least twice as high. 51 56
- Alabasta's people honored him with a bronze statue despite his hidden role in engineering the country's crisis. 53
- He intended to build Seastone prisons after troublesome Ability Users repeatedly interfered with his plans. 58
