Geography and Locations

Alabasta is defined by desert terrain, intense sunlight, and a noticeable shift in Magnetic Field properties upon approach. Its harsh climate leaves travelers vulnerable to heat, sandstorms, and water shortages. 53 57

Alubarna	The capital and site of the Royal Palace. It received unusually frequent rainfall while the rest of the kingdom suffered drought, making it central to Crocodile's Dance Powder scheme. 57 59
Rainbase	A prosperous city directly overseen by Crocodile before his defeat. Known as the Casino City, it had abundant water, strong security, and a higher quality of life than much of the kingdom. 66

Government and Society

Alabasta is a monarchy whose royal family historically maintained close contact with ordinary citizens. Vivi describes it as a country of peace, and recalls a childhood in which royalty could mingle freely with local children near the palace. 59

The kingdom's mayors govern their own cities and generally report only major matters, such as war, to the king. This decentralized arrangement left the royal court poorly informed about worsening conditions in distant oasis cities. 65

Despite its World Government affiliation, Alabasta's Royal Army is largely unable to repel powerful Grand Line pirates. The kingdom traditionally depended on Marine intervention, which helped Crocodile cultivate public gratitude by personally resolving pirate incidents. 53

Nefertari Heritage

The Nefertari Family was one of the twenty royal families involved in founding the World Government. Unlike the other nineteen, they refused to abandon Alabasta and move to the Holy Land, losing Celestial Dragon status in the process. 112

This decision left Alabasta in an uneasy position: the Celestial Dragons regard the family as traitors and show signs of suppressing them, but cannot act too openly against such an ancient royal line. 112

Alabasta also possesses a historical stone tablet recording the whereabouts of Pluton, an ancient battleship. Pluton is described as a weapon protected by Vivi's family. 78 190

Baroque Works Crisis

Before Crocodile's arrival, Vivi describes Alabasta as peaceful. As unexplained disasters and unrest began appearing, Crocodile repeatedly intervened as a savior, eventually becoming a public hero more revered than King Cobra; a bronze statue of him stood at the port. 48 53

Crocodile secretly led Baroque Works, using the organization to create internal conflict, undermine the monarchy, and seize the country without provoking Marine action against a Warlord of the Sea. 48 49

His scheme included the use of Dance Powder to draw water vapor toward Alubarna. While the capital received abnormal rainfall, other regions suffered drought, shrinking the population's living space and worsening unrest. 57 60

Baroque Works also replaced King Cobra with Mr. 2 Bon Clay, whose Imitation Fruit allowed him to impersonate the king and issue harmful decrees. The real Cobra was held prisoner. 59 69

Liberation and Reconstruction

Vivi, operating undercover as Miss Wednesday, sought evidence linking Crocodile to Baroque Works and pledged Alabasta's future support to Ling Donglai if he helped resolve the crisis. 48 54 55

Ling Donglai's group exposed the false king, rescued Cobra, and enabled the royal government to begin purging Baroque Works. 68 69

When Crocodile launched a massive sandstorm against Alubarna, Ling Donglai used a Magnetic Field shield made from gathered iron to protect the capital. He later defeated and killed Crocodile, then magnetically moved the entire capital to safety from the storm. 70 72

Cobra removed the Dance Powder before it could be publicly exploited, revealed the truth of the crisis, and oversaw the disbandment of the rebel army. 72

Following the battle, Ling Donglai refused the Marines' offer to become a Warlord of the Sea and instead accepted recognition as Alabasta's guardian deity. His bounty was subsequently erased. 72 73

Foreign Relations and Development

• Izumo — Allied nation. Alabasta contributed legal expertise and assistance in establishing laws on the Cloud Continent, while receiving Sky Island shell products, climate support, and improved weather conditions. 91
• Germa Kingdom — Allied through a technology agreement negotiated after Crocodile's defeat. Germa provided technological assistance, laboratories, and later surveillance-development support for Alabasta. 75 77
• World Government and Marines — Alabasta is formally affiliated with the World Government, though its experience with Crocodile demonstrated that this status did not guarantee protection from a Warlord's covert takeover. 49 53
• Baroque Works — Former internal enemy responsible for the attempted overthrow of the Nefertari monarchy. 48 69

Economy and Reform

After the crisis, reconstruction began in Alubarna. Ling Donglai advised Vivi to focus on economic development and to expand Rainbase's casino industry into a national economic center. 73

Alabasta initially lacked substantial financial strength during its reconstruction, but its alliance with Germa and Izumo brought technology, military support, Sky Island materials, shell-based goods, and climate assistance. 75 91

Vivi later took part in establishing and refining laws for the Cloud Continent, applying Alabasta's royal and administrative experience to the broader alliance. 91
