Background

Ling Donglai was found as an infant after pirates attacked a village. The villagers gave him minimal food and shelter, leaving him to survive largely on his own. By age three, he had learned rudimentary writing from discarded comic books and begun exercising; he later received limited informal training from the village chief. 101

At fourteen, Ling sensed the potential of the Devil Fruit he had eaten. Its bodily-control benefits allowed him to perceive his own internal state, develop his cells through constant training, and begin producing bio-electricity through willpower. He supported himself as a laborer in Shimotsuki Village and watched the local dojo’s students train. 1

He sought instruction and a spar from Koushiro, but Koushiro refused. Seeing “a lion” in Ling’s eyes and knowing he had been a pirate, Koushiro believed training him would lead to trouble. 1

After developing Electric Current Drive, Ling left to test himself through combat, planning to win one hundred consecutive battles and awaken Conqueror’s Haki. His initial goal was to grow strong enough to challenge Arlong, whose ability to fight in seawater directly threatened Ling’s weakness as a Devil Fruit user. 2
