Background

Loki was raised as an Asgardian prince alongside his brother Thor. Hela later tells Evenson that Loki has Frost Giant blood but is also Odin's son, challenging the belief that he was Laufey's child. Evenson concludes that Odin intended Loki's bloodline to bring Jotunheim closer to Asgard; this is Evenson's interpretation of Odin's plans 735.

Loki came to believe that Odin had arranged his life to serve Thor's future. He rebelled, then joined an invasion of Earth; the account of his motives describes revenge against Odin rather than a wish to govern. During Thor's earlier exile, Loki told him that Odin was dead. He also activated the Destroyer while Odin was unconscious, though his incomplete control prevented it from using its full strength 203 213 222 729.

After stealing the Cosmic Cube, Loki demanded submission from a crowd in Germany. Captured and held aboard S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarrier, he tried to recruit Evenson and turn him against his allies. He was subsequently imprisoned in Asgard's dungeon 253 279 283 715.

During the Dark Elf invasion, Thor enlisted Loki to help lure Malekith to the Dark World. Loki staged a betrayal, using illusions to make Thor appear injured so Malekith would begin extracting the Aether in front of him. Loki later appeared to die while helping Thor, but had faked his death to avoid returning to prison 729 740 741 762.

Loki returned to Asgard disguised as an Einherjar, ambushed Odin, banished him to Earth, and assumed his identity on the throne. Frigga discovered the deception and secured the regency, leaving Loki king in appearance while she governed 762.

Appearance

Loki has black hair and was described by a Dark Elf warrior as delicate-looking. He usually maintains an elegant posture, even in confinement 283 728 735 740.

• His composure breaks after he believes Frigga has died: he tears his clothes, throws off his shoes, and sits barefoot in his wrecked cell 729.

Personality

Loki is proud, theatrical, and quick to exploit an opening. He tries persuasion before sowing distrust when Evenson rejects his offer, and he takes visible pleasure in fooling Thor while impersonating Odin 283 762.

His family relationships are less controlled. The belief that Odin used him as a pawn fuels his rebellion, while the apparent loss of Frigga leaves him devastated. Frigga later judges that he wants the throne to prove himself, not because he wants to administer a kingdom; Loki acknowledges that he has scarcely planned beyond taking it 729 762.

Loki learned his spells from Frigga and uses illusions for disguise, misdirection, and escape 719 742 877.

• Changes his appearance repeatedly while traveling with Thor 729.
