Background / History
Wu Changkong first appears as the cold, severe instructor overseeing Tang Wulin, Xie Xie, and Gu Yue's special training at Eastsea Academy. He punishes Xie Xie's careless remarks with additional laps, but quietly takes note of Lin Xuan's predawn weighted training and values his diligence. 22
When Lin Xuan forcibly seeks his guidance through a sword challenge, Wu Changkong recognizes the unusual purity of Lin Xuan's self-taught swordsmanship. He tests Lin Xuan in a prolonged exchange, explains the distinction between the Way of Sword Technique and the mainstream Way of Sword Intent, and permits Lin Xuan to seek him out for future sword-cultivation advice. 24 25
He later recruits Lin Xuan into the Tang Sect's “Candy Sect” branch and personally vouches for his assessment. Lin Xuan's performance causes Wu Changkong to consider sending him to Shrek Academy. 34 35
As Zero Class's instructor, Wu Changkong combines demanding sparring sessions with blunt tactical critiques. He evaluates students according to their actual performance rather than sentiment, accepts legitimate advantages created through their own abilities, and gives Lin Xuan full marks after the Spirit Ascension Platform survival assessment. 44 47 52
During the journey toward Shrek City, Wu Changkong attempts to shield the students from a Red Orb using his full strength and Battle Armor, but is overwhelmed. He continues to protect and guide Tang Wulin after Lin Xuan's disappearance, discouraging him from recklessly searching without a plan. 81 82 89
Following Shrek's later crisis, Wu Changkong remains involved in the academy's defense and reconstruction. He directs students toward the underground shelter when the Golden Ancient Tree begins withering, then undergoes closed-door seclusion to strengthen himself for Shrek's future. 324 346
Appearance
Wu Changkong is consistently portrayed in white robes with a blue sword, carrying an aloof, immortal-like bearing. His presence becomes markedly colder and more imposing when he draws his ice-blue Frost Sky Sword. 22 24 346
- White robes and a blue sword are his defining visual image. 22
- Wields an ice-blue longsword identified with his Ice Sword Martial Soul. 24 25
- Later appears with blue hair and white clothing. 358
- Activates white Battle Armor during major combat. 81
Personality
Wu Changkong is terse, distant, and demanding. He initially dismisses Lin Xuan's request for instruction with “Not interested,” and he regularly punishes undisciplined behavior without softening his words. 24 22
Behind that severity, he respects talent earned through effort. Lin Xuan's persistence, unusual swordsmanship, and humble attitude persuade him to provide guidance; he is similarly willing to acknowledge his students' accomplishments when they genuinely earn them. 22 25 47
He is notably fair in combat matters. Although Wang Jinxi was once his student, Wu Changkong refuses to disclose Wang Jinxi's Martial Soul weaknesses to Yuanen Yehui when they face each other. 178
Wu Changkong also carries a strong sense of responsibility toward his students and junior sister. He restrains Tang Wulin's impulsive attempt to search for Lin Xuan, remains at Shrek despite his earlier temperament, and worries over Shen Yi's future after emerging from seclusion. 89 176 346
