Background / History
Mary's magical talent was discovered during an examination when she was around seven years old. She transferred from a women's college to a magic college, where specialist teachers taught her to regulate her Chaos Magic. Tissaia de Vries later recommended her to Lady Vesemir, who selected her from Aretuza as an especially promising apprentice. 130 582
For five or six years, Lady Vesemir largely left Mary to self-study from a valuable reading list instead of personally instructing her. This made Mary especially sensitive to the attention Lady Vesemir gave Ailin, including ten days of alchemy lessons. 32
At Kaer Morhen, Mary initially serves as Lady Vesemir's obedient assistant, taking notes during Ailin's lessons and helping verify that his potion formulas were not taught by her mentor. 25 52 She is then ordered to learn how to refine Drowner Heart Essence Fluid, a difficult task that leaves her repeatedly exhausted and darkened by the work around Drowner hearts. 110 111
After Lady Vesemir declines Ailin's invitation to join the Pact of the Wolves, she recommends Mary instead. Mary signs a contract with Ailin and becomes the company's sorceress, taking responsibility for reports, potion instruction, and training supervision while he is away from Kaer Morhen. 129 136
Mary later accompanies Ailin and Vesemir on their travels, despite initially claiming she only wished to study potion recipes. Her concern for Ailin becomes increasingly apparent during their missions. 220 225 245 At the Temple of Melitele, she becomes Yennefer's first consistent magical teacher and caregiver. 251 264 265

She is diligent and adaptable. Although Essence Fluid refinement initially overwhelms her, she accepts the Witcher Company's duties, studies Ailin's recipes, and develops into a capable instructor for Witchers and young sorceresses. 129 217 264
Mary is deeply protective of those she considers close. She worries about Ailin during dangerous missions, sympathizes with Yennefer's fear of Kaer Morhen, and monitors Yennefer's recovery daily. 220 265 627 Her attachment to Ailin also makes her jealous and suspicious of women around him, particularly Philippa Eilhart and Francesca Findabair. 520 586 634
